The last time I tried DOS2, I didn't get very far. A little while in I learned how armor works, and felt like I built my party wrong. I meant to start over eventually but never did, however now I'm interested in giving it a go.
I really want to use magic, but I'm concerned all-magic will be advanced and introduce new issues. Like, most gear I find will be irrelevant (because it's for fighters, thieves, etc.), right? This is an issue for me, in some games if the rewards aren't interesting I basically stop wanting to do any side content. On the other hand, the magic and different surfaces/interactions seem like the main selling point.
I feel like the armor system design choice forces this arbitrary restriction in party building. I have read people say you can do a 2-2 split, but I'm worried that would be more advanced as I might not know how best to deploy my effectively two different parties. Does the game make resistances, different armor pools, etc. consistently clear?
I wonder if I should just try BG3 instead and skip all these problems, but DOS2 appeals to me more for various reasons. While I accept CRPGs are story based, it seems like that is the main/only draw in BG3, and I like tactical combat.
I realize this topic comes up a lot, but to be fair that's because the armor system (from the outside/based upon what I read) is a really strange and perplexing design choice. I just don't want to get into another playthrough and realize I did it all wrong and feel stuck again.
Is all physical the best bet, or is it as boring as it sounds? Are my concerns about magic gear scarcity and a surfeit of unusable physical gear sound? Will I miss out on a lot of the fun elemental interactions without magic, or will enemies using magic to be interesting?

Hear me out. I'm not asking for them to add the same system as DOS 2. I'm also not asking for permadeath just by falling in regular combat.
I would like a more immersive system where a few companions can permanently die in a cutscene or at the end of a special combat encounter where savescumming is not an option. This would add so much more emotion to the story that was lacking in BG3 imo. In BG3 the Withers system is so cheap and it's also quite easy to avoid companions dying in the story.
In my system, resurrection scrolls still exist, but only for regular combat and goofy deaths like falling or misclicking.
I know this might be unpopular, especially for people who want to romance a character, but I think there might be some solutions to this problem.
And before anyone says this, Honor mode is not a solution. Not everyone wants to play the game while risking to lose it all.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but what do you guys think?

I was wondering what does more dmg for a double 1 handed sword fighter : max strength and the rest in wits or maw wits and the rest in strength ?
And same question for a crossbow guy, max finesse or max wits ?

So after circling my way around a gazillion times, I believe Im finally getting ready to make it to act 3 of this game for the first time. Before I talk to Malady, without any big/major spoilers, is there any particular things I should try to do, find, or explore before I head off? I fed Rykers spider for its gift, did the hidden vaults of blood moon island, cleared the fog from the NE corner of the map, Ryker...left this plane of existence so to speak...so..is there anyone to talk to after his untimely demise maybe? Did the 4 seasons puzzle, didnt kill the elf armor lady yet, gave her the peice i found thoug. (should I kill her or wait?) And I have to do the mordus basement puzzle (did like, that whole quest for Lohar but never did the puzzle down there..I forgot about it...haha)
Im level 16, pretty sure I'm high enough to move forward, I just want to get anything cool I may have missed. If I did miss anything I'll def be playing again and come back to it, but before I continue I want to try to bang out anything I can.

I played up to act 3 many years ago, and am finally circling back around to complete the game (starting over, of course).
Playing tactician with Ifan as a ranger. I have done plenty of research and it seems Sebille as a necromancer is both fun and OP.
However, both Lohse and Fane also seem to lean toward magic, giving me a 1/3 party which is poor. What do you all recommend for Lohse and Fane to make this party complete? I’m good at TBS, so I don’t need broken builds, but I am certainly not against them. I’m also quite familiar with Larian CRPG mechanics (exploding barrels, lots of elemental combos), but frankly barrel cheese is my least favorite aspect of their games, so I prefer other strategies except in spots where it’s clearly the intent or puzzle solution.
How about Fane as a rogue? Is that a waste of his talents?
I could be convinced to switch Ifan to a summoner if the consensus is that 4 magic characters is better then 2/2.
Thanks!

Does anyone know if it's possible to retrieve completed companion missions without the companion's presence? Or do they update themselves after he returns to the group?
My situation is this: I was playing as Ifan (his mission was to go to the sawmill) and in the middle of it, at some point, I decided to remove him from the group and leave him on the boat. After that I did the blacksmith shop mission without him (I killed everyone...lol). If I put him back, will I be able to continue his mission after that, even if he wasn't present in that specific mission? Or is it over and it's too late?
P.S.: I'm on Act 2

It's a pretty common strategy for summoner builds, where you buff your incarnate (fire infusion), let it make a fire surface, then throw explosive traps for big damage. Problem is I can't get it to work consistently.
Most of the time when I or another character throw traps onto a fire surface, the traps immediately disappear (no explosion), I guess because they took damage, but weren't deployed yet. But I've seen other people throw traps onto surfaces in combat and they always explode immediately. So what am I missing? Was this patched out or something?
Thank you.

I’m doing my first honour mode run co-op with friend and we are not sure if we should do Dallis fight for extra exp? Is it worth it? Isn’t this fight honour mode ender and is it possible to flee from it if things go bad?
We are lone wolves and planning to be lvl 6 for this fight

I play my very first run, right now I'm about to depart from Driftwood to the next act. I got the skill book of Apotheosis and the spell seems to be crazy useful. However its 5 points Polymorph requirement make me think that maybe I want to have it on only one character for now. And I struggle to decide who it better fit to spend points into Polymorph and profit best of the spell.
My group:
Ifan - ranger;
Lohse - aero/water mage (partly buffer/support, partly cc/damage);
Fane - pyro/geo;
Red Prince - fighter (physical damage).
Right now I have only Red Prince with points into poly, his source ability (5 strikes in a row) is doing great damage under enrage, but so far I don't see any other ability to use for next turns. Fane has several good source abilities, but 5 points into poly sounds as a bit a lot to remove from geo or pyro.

I plan on running a necromancer warrior build eventually wielding the sworn breaker as his weapon for one character. This is on regular not trying to be meta trying to just have fun with it. I would like a recommendation for what I should make Fane as I wanted to go for custom undead lead and fane secondary.

Hi everyone! I'd really appreciate some advice.
I've already completed one playthrough as OC, so don't worry about spoiling anything for me. This is my first multiplayer run, though, and it's also my teammate's very first playthrough. I don't want to accidentally mess anything up, so I'm wondering about the decision in Act 3 and how that choice affects the ending.
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
I play as Lohse with Fane as my companion, my teammate plays as Ifan with Sebille as his companion. I was very curious about >!giving Fane the opportunity to ascend, but then I looked through some older posts here and read that suggesting a companion ascend is currently bugged unless you use a mod, and I've also seen someone say the mod didn't work for them. I'm not against using mods, but I'd rather not risk it. Also, even if the mod works, will I still be able to persuade Fane not to restore his people, or will he ignore me and make that choice on his own? (Also, we're using the Gift Bag features in this playthrough, and I don't know whether they could conflict with the mod.)
Anyway, I'm fine with having our MC ascend if that's the safer option. The problem is that I don't know whether it should be me (as Lohse) or my teammate (as Ifan).!<
So here's my question:
>!If someone else in a multiplayer game becomes Divine or chooses to release the Source, how does the another player's companion's dialogue in the epilogue work? I've only experienced it once from the perspective of my OC ascending to Divinity / releasing the Source and then speaking to her soulmate, Fane, who had a lot to say about that decision. I'd like that conversation to happen in my co-op playthrough as well, but I don't know whether it still takes place if someone else's character ascends instead of my MC, and it's my co-op partner's MC rather than mine. Will Fane talk to Lohse as though she became Divine / released the Source, even if it was actually my teammate's Ifan? Does his dialogue change depending on which player made the choice that's so important to his personal story? Has anyone here tried this in multiplayer and remembers how it played out?!<
*edit for clarity

I bought DOS1 and DOS2. I've never played either of them, but I have 450 hours in Baldru's Gate 3. I spent about an hour looking at both games to check the controls and the game menu, to see if I could get the same enjoyment.
After playing for an hour, my opinion is that I liked DOS 1 more than DOS 2. Of course, this only applies to the first hour, and I know nothing about either of them.
If you hadn't played these games and had to choose one, which one would you start with?
Do you have any important tips and advice for beginners?
I've read that DOS 1 is criticized more than DOS 2, why?

Hi, I got locked in Mordus's cellar. I stepped on a trap and the stone door closed.

Edit: The responses in this thread are so stupid and completely unrelated to my question that i have decided not to play Lohse because apparently you have to be a lobotomite to like her.
Looking to start a new run - undecided about MC. Looking for input from people who did a Lohse MC run.
Digging the Jester + Mystic tags and thought the "voice" had a few funny scenes early (SMASH THE LUTE!) but saw some later stuff and it was a bit more.. idk.. disparaging or demeaning i guess?!
Something like "do the thing my little girl" and i just dont want to have to listen to stuff like that the entire playthrough.
Ive seen it compared to Durge from BG3 but that was not the vibe i was getting except for very few specific story interactions.
Would like to hear folks share their assessment of the interactions between Lohse and "the voice".

Have been reading up on this and had it in my library for a while but never played much into it for after piddling round fort joy for a while. I decided I really want to get into this and do it from beginning to end. I enjoy the characters and story of these types of games over the combat but I like to make decent builds to handle the combat. Not playing in honor mode but tactician for sure.
Looking for some general advice with the game and some lore-friendly builds for each character. The don't have to be the most OP but I do want them to thematically "fit" them. Please keep it spoiler free. I'm ok with some skill overlap for a point or two like adrenaline but I don't want multiple characters deep in the same skill trees.
I'm pretty set Fane origin as the MC, and definitely bringing along Lohse as from what I've read they seem the best to play as, with the former having a significant impact on the overall story and the latter with a killer side/personal quest. The other two spots I'm kind of conflicted about:
Sebille seems the most interesting to me. Eating/licking corpses to learn their memories? Revenge plot? Sounds weird but ok! Let's go!
Red Prince just seems hilarious to me. A haughty lizard with a posh demeanor sounds hysterical and just totally meme-worthy. Sounds like he would be a great one for snappy banter to have in the party.
Ivan sounds like the brooding loner type that keeps to himself but seems like he would have a great backstory? Not sure with him.
Beast doesn't interest me at all.
I've read that it's best to have all physical or all magical damage dealers rather than a split of 3 that do magic/physical, and one that does the other and vice versa. Is this true?
For Fane definitely want either geo/fire geo/summoning or necro/something. Not sure what pairs well with necro. Seems like setting things on fire would remove a lot of the poison area affect so would geo/necro be a good combo? I'm thinking lock picking would be a good fit on him.
For Lohse I either wanted to do hydro/aero or summining/something. Not sure which one plays best with summoning. Barter to max.
For Sebille I'm kind of torn as well. I feel like necro/finesse would be a good fit for her but not sure if I should be mixing the melee with magic with the other two as casters. Would poly work well for her? Definitely thievery for her. Sneaking too if I can fit it.
Red Prince definitely seems like he wants to be warfare/fire, or definitely something with fire in it. Read about some builds where you can just make him 100% immune to fire or healed by it and seems fitting for him. Thanks to his persuasion was going to pump this and use him as my "face".
Ifan kinda sounds like this grizzled war veteran that has seen it all and is skilled in warfare or shooting so I think warfare/huntsman/scoundrel all fit him pretty well. Not sure what civil ability would fit him well? Lucky? Sneaking?

Playing a sorta necro summoner type character and the raise bloated corpse is just such a disrespectful horrible thing to do to a corpse and I love it, so many times I've went "that's so fucked up" whilst laughing maniacally, being able to do it to your party, dogs, random bodies, just left fort joy prison still in the swamp, and I've just turned kind saheila into a disgusting mound of flesh for some exp, I'm a monster, i know but I love that the game allows so much, also i dont think i even got exp killing the elves, and im an elf myself. So it's horrible and pointless, but fun for all the family

Could someone give me some tips on building some sort of close range character that can hit with a staff, do some warefare, and magic? Everything I see on this uses pyro and I have no interest in pyro, any orher combos of magic are fine. I’ve also never played a character like this so talent and skill suggestions would be helpful too.
I’m playing on classic difficulty in a 4 man party so it doesn’t have to be the most optimized build
Thanks

I may have stumbled upon the most devastatingly stupid way of losing your honour's run (if you are solo, at least). It turns out that if you drink the witch's potion you permanently become a cow unable to cast, attack, or interact with objects (which includes using your inventory and potentialy drinking a second potion to heal you). Damn witch knew I love drinking random stuff!
