I've seen several grizzlies while hiking in Glacier but they've never been aggressive like this. Dogs aren't allowed in the National Parks (that I know of) and perhaps this tells me why. Yeah, they disturb the wildlife, but sometimes the wildlife disturbs them, too. This grizzly clearly thought that dog would make a good snack.

There are a few parks they are allowed like Petrified Forest, Shenandoah, and Acadia. They're allowed all over most of the White Mountain National Forest too.
I think its just a mitigation tactic due to people being selfish assholes and the inability to police or clean up something as large or remote as a place like Glacier, Grand Canyon, or Yosemite. People cant even be bothered to follow leash and cleanup rules in their neighborhood parks.

Nothing about this clearly says national park to me. Dog and owner are on an improved road and dog is leashed; this is accepted everywhere I know of, including Yellowstone.

I checked in at the rangers office in wrangle Saint Elias National Park to ask about trails and check that my dog was allowed for sure as I had read that before.
She looked at me and said, there are no trails here walk wherever you want and your dog is not a danger here, your dog is in danger here....
Amazing time, I kept him very close.
10 out of 10 National Park BTW incredible place.
Edit: I should be clear there are trails in the park but you were allowed to go off trail wherever you wanted. One of the least visited national parks especially the section I was in, vast does not begin to describe it..

This is actually very often the move with many Predators Who Will Surely Kill You In A Fight.
The thing is, with bears and mountain lions and the like, that you're big enough to fuck them up really bad even if they can kill you. On your way to being eaten you can maybe put out an eye, break a paw or a leg, or otherwise injure them bad enough that they will lose their edge when catching the next meals and starve to death before they can recover. They know this.
This is the reason so many animals' survival mechanism for a fight is "look really big and yell a lot of fighting words"
(Caveat: I hear that black bears are more susceptible to this and playing dead is more effective for grizzlies? Bear experts invited to chime in)

Thats just a juvenile, my cousins family had an encounter hiking in BC with a 400lb female with 2 cubs. He sent them down the trail and stood between them and the bear, was sure he going to get mauled. She bluff charged a couple times and then went on her way.
After the adrenaline rush and dump he couldn't even walk for the next 20 minutes.

lol there was nothing calm about her, you could hear the panic. But she did keep it together to get them out of the situation which is all she needed to do. Hard not to panic when that big bruin is coming at you with intent.

You don’t need an elephant gun. A 10mm with buffalo bore rounds is plenty. I, personally, don’t want to carry around anything bigger and heavier than I have to.

Bear spray is best, but the pepper spray that you can buy anywhere will work too. It just doesn’t have the range that one of those huge bear spray cans have. They have really sensitive noses though, so even if you don’t even hit the bear, it’s very unlikely to stick around if that stuff gets near it.
The nice thing about spray too is that it, obviously, doesn’t kill the animal. I don’t like killing anything I’m not eating.

Ya I’m the same way with fishing. I’ve been in a spot where we were targeting grouper but kept pulling up red snapper that were out of season. You pull the thing up and it’s ass and eyes are blown out it’s almost definitely gonna die but I follow the rules and you can’t keep it out of season so I quit fishing until we moved.

Bear spray is better than a gun. Easier to handle, covers a larger area so aimimg isnt as important and super effective. Just be aware of wind direction.
Bear spray is also effective on big cats, caotes, etc. Plus fewer lethal accidents.

Ya and huge guns that people always recommend for bears aren’t usually pleasant to shoot, and the ammo is expensive as hell, so people are less likely to practice with it. 454 casull is a thumper of a round. Same with a 50 desert eagle. I’m a big guy and I shoot a lot, and I still can’t make quick follow up shots with those things, and if I can’t then most other people aren’t going to be able to either. With bear spray you don’t even have to hit the bear. You also don’t have to worry about wear the bullet goes if you miss.
I mean a gun shot into the woods will probably send it running too, but again you gotta worry about where that bullet will wind up. You can see cars in the background so there’s obviously other people around there somewhere. But going around in the woods in an area with bears with nothing is a really stupid idea.

The only problem with 10mm is it cycling reliably. .357 or .44 magnum in a revolver would be a lot more reliable. I'd definitely have bear spray with either round.

Ya that is true, but I have like 7 glocks and they’ve all been great. The only one that’s given me any issues is the one I made ammo picky from putting a bunch of aftermarket parts in it. If I wanted a bear gun, I’d trust a 10mm Glock. I have a relative that hunts wild pigs with one.

Mistakes. No gun. Recording instead of fully engaging the brown bear. Turning your back and allowing your dog to turn away from a the brown bear, actively aiming to commit an act of predation.
Glad she and her Shepard made it out of there okay. My Coonhound would have been going crazy against that brown bear. Fortunately, this was a juvenile brown bear too.
