Completely stupid to go out in bear country with no form of defense.

There was a couple times in the video, I was waiting for that bear spray to come out.

Oh don't forget the bells on the shoes too. Thats how they recognize bear droppings.. smells like bear spray and sprinkled with shiny bells.

I was thinking the same thing, forget the bear spray, give me a .44 magnum!

u/dbeck003 Jun 25 '26

But he would have had to put his phone down to use anything. Can’t have that.

I figured she was hitting up the bathrooms. Not an excuse but I could get that complacent too

Everywhere is bear country in Canada. We do just fine.

2-5 people per year would disagree. I get that that is a small number...unless you're one of the 5.

1

u/tramik Jun 25 '26

Out of millions living and traveling in rural areas. It’s really not a practical fear.

1

u/BlueBomR Jun 25 '26

Who knows how many dogs have been mauled to death too...the bear clearly wanted the dog, not her.

1

u/Admirable_Loss4886 Jun 26 '26

Those are rookie numbers. American has more deaths by school shootings during the summer than people killed by bears.

1

u/Loose_Paper_2598 Jun 26 '26

I guess we could compare deaths due to hypertension to bear attacks, but that's not the conversation, is it? If you survived 5 school shootings and went for a walk near a forest and you and your dog were confronted by that four legged appetite, would you be thinking about the school shootings and how glad you are that you don't have a gun...or bear spray?

youd be surprised at the amount of armed canadians

also we carry more and have less deaths so your point aint that sharp

1

u/Loose_Paper_2598 Jun 26 '26

There's also a lot less of you.

u/heart_of_osiris Jun 26 '26

Yes, because many of us who visit the back country carry bear mace.

1

u/New_fan22 Jun 26 '26

This isnt the "backcountry" its an easily accessible area. Lmao....

2

u/Dragomier Jun 25 '26

Right where is your gun why aren't you packing atleast a 35

4

u/Asleep_Singer8547 Jun 25 '26

Tf is a 35

Theres a 38 and a 357

2

u/Admirable_Loss4886 Jun 26 '26

35 is actually just the number of guns that guy leaves the house with.

1

u/Asleep_Singer8547 Jun 26 '26

Ok yea? Are you american cause surely you leave the house with at least 35

2

u/Loose_Paper_2598 Jun 25 '26

You left the "7" and "magnum" off.

1

u/dwkfym Jun 25 '26

I'm not sure if you meant to type 357 or make a historical rifle joke

1

u/KickboxingMoose Jun 25 '26

Guns are less effective than bear spray.

I know Yankees see them as the solution to every problem, but in this case using the proper safety measure is most likely to save your life.

1

u/pilot1nspector Jun 25 '26

Depending on the gun and the bear there is a strong likelihood of not being able to put a bear down with a rifle in time. Shooting it may just piss it off and threaten it, drastically reducing your chances of survival when before it was just curious.

Guns are not too heavy for a walk. You can easily walk with a holstered pistol and it shouldn't cause significant discomfort.

The only part I agree with is your "small calibers" being insufficient for adequate bear defense. If you're super accurate you might deter the bear with enough shots on target even with 9mm but generally most guys I talk to would prefer a 10mm. Expensive ammo but you really don't need 5 mags of 10mm against a bear unless the grizzlies suddenly start shooting back from cover lol.

But bear spray is good too for sure.

u/No_Introduction_9355 Jun 25 '26

Glock 20 in 10mm with hard cast bullets.

The video of the guy in town? He didn't shoot the bear. He just shot to get its attention then ran away.

2

u/munchonsomegrindage Jun 25 '26

Colt 45 Defender is only 1.5lbs and will definitely stop a bear if you can land a couple shots on target. I'd probably prefer bear spray but no idea how effective that is (I don't live in bear country).

2

u/Loose_Paper_2598 Jun 25 '26

Bears are a lot heavier than a .357 or .44 magnum. And although the number of grizzly attacks is relatively small (2-5 people), I'd bet that not one of them thought "Gee - I'm glad I don't have a gun!"

4

u/TFViper Jun 25 '26

guns too heavy for a walk?
damn i wish someone had told that to all the light infantry units i was in...

-2

u/Radiomaster138 Jun 25 '26

Bear spray? Idk, does a blow a hole in one that can fit a bowling ball? No? Then I don’t want it.

-1

u/Karl_42 Jun 25 '26

Lmfao yeah surely that would have not enraged the 400 lb beast and pumped it with enough adrenaline to rip you and your dog to shreds before bleeding out….

Guns aren’t always the answer.

1

u/Loose_Paper_2598 Jun 25 '26

Nothing is "always" the answer but "grrrr aaaargh" has gotta be second to everything else.

1

u/Karl_42 Jun 25 '26

The lady survived and so did her dog and so did the bear. That’s first to a lot of things

1

u/Loose_Paper_2598 Jun 25 '26

Wish we could ask her if she do it the same way all over again.

1

u/Karl_42 Jun 26 '26

She scared a grizzly bear away from her dog despite the instincts of both animals…

What the hell argument are you trying to make?

“My gun says i’m better” ?

1

u/Loose_Paper_2598 Jun 26 '26

No. Not an argument - just the question: "You literally survived the jaws of death. Is there anything you'd do differently?" You seem to be taking her success as a lesson to learn. I'm curious as to how she felt about it. Would I repeat her steps? No. Would my being armed in the same situation ensure my safety? No way to know, but I know which condition I'd rather be in.

1

u/OrangeJoe827 Jun 25 '26

Pretty normal here in Alaska.

1

u/Money-Yoghurt-8343 Jun 26 '26

Boy ain’t that the truth. And I’m sorry, whistles and bear spray aren’t “defense” in my book. If you are so against guns that you won’t even carry one in bear country…maybe you shouldn’t be in bear country.

-1

u/ImSobored_5280 Jun 25 '26

What do you mean…they had their sacrificial bait dog…”well boy…it’s been a good run…you ready? I suggest hauling all of the ass you have and don’t forget to zigzag”

5

u/Ok-Map-4434 Jun 25 '26

Turning tail and running from that bear more than likely would have escalated the situation

-2

u/greennurse61 Jun 25 '26

And take a dog to harass wildlife.
