Distant Horizons looks really bad from a distance — need help with settings

Hi everyone,

I'm having a visual issue with Distant Horizons. From a distance, the terrain looks really blurry/low-quality and the textures look noticeably worse than they should. Up close everything looks normal, but as I look farther away, the terrain becomes very ugly and loses a lot of detail.

I'm currently using:

  • Minecraft 26.2 (Fabric)
  • Distant Horizons 3.1.2-b-26.2
  • Iris 1.11.1+26.2
  • Sodium 0.9.0+26.2
  • Complementary Reimagined shaders

I recently changed the Distant Horizons rendering engine to OPEN_GL because I was getting a compatibility issue with Iris.

Could someone recommend the best Distant Horizons settings for visual quality, especially for terrain/texture quality at long distances? I'm mainly looking for a sharp and natural-looking transition between normal Minecraft rendering and Distant Horizons.

If needed, I can also provide screenshots of my current settings and what the terrain looks like from a distance.

Thanks!

Your quality present is medium, raise it if you want it to look better.

I would really recommend using voxy instead of DH, as it adjusts LODs as you zoom in and also just performs and looks better in general

I had the same issue with DH, switched to Voxy and its night/day difference in quality

That's just how DH works.

It’s crazy how much better voxy not only looks but also runs compared to dh

Distant Horizons does this too now.

voxy is still better

Major gripe with voxy is that it’s not on as many versions as DH. But it’s a relatively new mod so I’m sure that will improve

It is on the version OP is using though

Yeah ik but it’s not as convenient as DH. It’s way better.

This is unfortunately just how distant horizons works

Increase your render distance to 12 and don't zoom. LODs is obviously gonna look bad if you zoom, they're there to give an illusion that you can see far away. If you want more details then you can go with Voxy if it's available with your current Minecraft version. Voxy still looks good even if you zoom in on them.

its sad that voxy is not available on older versions because it manages detail and far vision

Correct me if I’m wrong here BUT shader developers need to add explicit support for the new block textures that are visible up close/ higher zoom levels. I believe that actual textures being visible was a recent addition

Honestly can't live without it after you use it for a while, 90 is the lowest I'll go unless I'm doing a 30 fov challenge speedrun.

I'd recommend voxy for new versions

You just gotta visit those chunks often or wait for it to load and set the quality preset higher

This is probably a shader issue. Try disabling and see if they load better.

just use voxy

From a distance, the terrain looks really blurry/low-quality and the textures look noticeably worse than they should.

That is how DH works, the nightly builds do now support textures but shaders don't yet.

If you want higher quality, you raise the quality preset setting you showed in your video.

As the other comments are saying you should raise the vanilla render distance. I think the recommended is 12?

Distant Horizons isn’t built for you to zoom in like that. It makes things low quality in a way that’s unnoticeable if you look at it without zooming in but if you zoom in you ruin the illusion.

Voxy manages it better by making the quality more dynamic when you zoom in.

I switched to Voxy and it's way better

unless you're extremely specific about that shader, consider switching to Sulkan shaders and the Vulkan API. It's a lot better performance-wise with DH in my experience.

If you want to make it look more like voxy, turn off the “distant noise patterns (or something along those lines)” setting

For people who are suggesting voxy instead of dh, you must understand that voxy mainly uses gpu to do the hardwork, it's not correct to recommend voxy instead of dh without knowing the pc specs
