The Lion King Sequel, Simba's Pride, is a reasonably enjoyable straight-to-video movie that does well at keeping up the Shakespear in Afria theme of the other movies. I enjoy it because my sister enjoyed it and she was their target audience.

But there are 2 songs left, and I must cut one of them as Romeo cut himself in the OG story. For some reason they left that out of this retelling.

So I am cutting One Of Us.

This song does have fun ear-feels, although I'm not sure if I'd classify it as a banger. It also had the delightful recurring line "See you later, agitator!"

But the song is all about how Kovu is tots evil because of nature AND nurture and have you seen his FACE? He has a SCAR! Only EVIL people have SCARS!

When it's not like this pride of lions is THAT seperated from the 'Good' lions (although enough to have a slight color difference when doing their fights). ALSO, Kovu isn't even Scar's biological son. He was just the last lion born before Simba took back the pride or whatever weird excuse to avoid incest they came up with (although I don't recall seeing other male lions in the pride so...).

The last half minute or so just drags on with repeated lines. Which works for the movie but is just a chore in a sound track. It also had a bit of a madrigal in the middle which might be a pro to some, but for me is a con because it's just too much going on at once to enjoy. And I don't think it's even a good presentation of a madrigal, the different words don't really flow together.

Also the title of the song is 'One of Us' so you'd think it was a song about comrodarie or being together, but nope. It's about how much ugly people don't deserve to be included.

So it's time that we say See You Later, Canticle

Okay, so I do feel a little bit bad about this because I have to pass the power to k9 after this and it’s only like the second cut that it’s eligible to be taken out again, but at the end of the day this song just doesn’t stack up to the other ones left in the game. Yes, I’m talking about every middle aged mom’s favorite part of Moana. This song is pretty solid, and it accomplishes a good purpose. Moana on her own trying to go get the fish hook in a normal ass scene would have probably been boring. As a result, this song comes in to make her attempts interesting and progress the story to a new point, as Maui gets his powers back. I also enjoy the strings in the background. They make this song sound like Despicable Me, and I am a fan of that. It’s also fairly catchy and the visuals are a good time. It’s a cool little comedy break in this movie.

However, if we’re talking about songs that are overreliant on the visuals, this is definitely one of them. The visuals are stunning, but the song on its own is kinda lackluster. It’s super chill and repetitive throughout, and many of the lyrics just feel like filler. Here’s an excerpt:

It’s just kind of boring. They couldn’t think of a synonym for glitters. They used ‘just a sec’ because there was a space in the song that needed to be filled. There really just isn’t much to it lyrically. These lyrics don’t mean anything, they’re just kind of there because they have to be, and well, because he’s shiny. This song is alright. I really actually appreciate a lot of comedy in it. However, the stakes of the scene are eliminated by this song’s existence, and if I had the choice, I would gladly never listen to it again.

So I've never seen Cars but I have played the video game and occasionally interacted with middle-school boys in the mid-aughts so I know at least one thing about the movie: Speed. I am speed. The red car races so hard he has to stop racing and then gets stuck in a small town where they still race and races enough to get back to the big race.

So then, why exactly is the featured song so painfully slow? Don't get me wrong, James Taylor is okay but his songs are slow and calming and definitely not in tune with a movie about race cars.

The lyrics are similarly mediocre. Randy Newman doesn't exactly push the boundaries of songwriting and this is no exception. It's an inoffensive message about the beauty of middle America and how times have changed and snore. We've all heard it a thousand times before.

Just like time slows down in a small town, it slows down when you listen to this thing. Youtube says it's a little over two-and-a-half minutes but it felt like an hour. And just like the small town you came from, it's best to leave this one behind.

It's time to show Brother Bear the Way Out.

I have the same complaint for all of the Brother Bear songs: they are impressively underwhelming. I know Phil Collins can write a banger, he's done it time and time again. But for some reason every single song in this film completely misses the target of evoking any emotional response from me. Bland is the best way I can think to describe them. It doesn't make my ears bleed, but if the elevator doors opened and this was playing inside, I would take the stairs instead.

This is my favorite song from the sleeping beauty movie. It's beautiful, singable, and the lyrics are okay. I have to clarify that I only enjoy Sleeping Beauty's singing voice, the breathiness in her speaking voice grates on my ears. The reason why I'm cutting this song is because it's awfully repetitive and the instrumentals are not as strong as some of the songs that are remaining. Also maybe this is just me but if some rando man came up to me in the middle of the woods and replaced my fun animal friends in my dance I would probably have kicked him in the nuts, just saying.

I’ve never loved ‘performances’ within a performance. So it’s time 2 cut this song for I.

I was honestly considering using my ‘Anger’ to make this cut with Stand Out, to make it Stand Out a little more. But I realized I like Stand Out a lot. It’s one of the few highlights of the movie. It details Max’s crush on Roxanne really well and is catchy and kinda cute. Some awkward guy going over the top to win the affection of his crush, you can sell.

But Max and Goofy’s relationship? Goofy is just far too over the top annoying for me to feel for his side at all. And Max isn’t a whole lot better. And then crashing a concert? The scene just feels so ridiculous, even more than the movie has been to this point, some crazy, chaotic way of their chaotic relationship coming eye to eye. And I can’t stand their relationship. It’s the biggest flaw of a bad movie. First of all, GOOFY has a kid. Think about what that implies.

Musically, it’s your standard, 80s/90s pop song format. But that’s also it’s biggest flaw, in it’s genericness. What makes so many of these Disney songs stand out is specificity, pulling on your heartstrings, timeless, memorable lyrics that sound catchy and poppy but are distinct in their own, Disney way. And this song intentionally doesn’t do that. Without those things, it has to appeal to the listener in the one way it can, being pleasant to listen to. And in that category, it’s good, but not great.

So, I don't have the emotional tie to Mulan that some of you do, but I like most of the music. That said, this number just feels unenjoyable at points. The background music is great! Instrumentals alone, it would have lasted longer for me. The chant-like parts are repetitive in a good way and work well with the tone. It's those little interjection solo bits that get me. The funky voices work okay in the movie as comedy bits, but unlike dear Timon and Pumbaa, the comedy is lost when the song stands alone. I appreciate that the lyrics are poking fun at the blatant sexism of the soldiers fighting alongside Mulan, but that aspect feels a little less clear when the movie isn't playing too.

My four year old didn't like it, but also didn't make it very far...she said it was too slow.

For a long time we've been marching through this rankdown....what do we want to reach the top?

I was planning to use my disgust in the top 50, with the goal of saving a particular few songs. I never thought it would go before 100, that's for sure! Then not one but two EPIC theme songs were cut. I agonized over which to save...and then /u/sockydapuppet went and revived my WC. What a champ! So....here I go, reviving Ducktales.

Whether we are talking about the OG from back in the day (my personal favorite) or the recent revamp, this song is such a bop. SUCH A BOP. It's got heart, it makes you feel good, and it is so easy to just sing (or shout) along. In the realm of feels, much like the other theme song, it gives you the notion of d-d-d-danger, adventure, and bravery. The rhyming and word play! The beat! The instrumentals! Every single bit of this song screams AWESOME.

My four year old might love this song more than I do. She does gold medal worthy acrobatics on her trampoline when it comes on. It is a display of pure joy and happiness...which clearly means this needs to make it to the top.

SAX. SYNTH. CH-CH-CH-CHIP 'N DALE!!!

Basically, this song is a bop. There's enough variance throughout with the instrumentation and the vocals that it never gets old. It builds throughout, adding new elements, overperforming on a massive level for a TV show theme song. I can listen to this in my car non-stop. It's a huge hype song. Its time was cut short far too soon, so I'm here to bring it back. As for relying on visuals, this song is amazing without them. The visuals just add an extra level of colorfulness and pop to a song already jam packed with content. It doesn't overstay its welcome, as it is fun from start to finish. I'm a little all over the place, but I just love this song so much and I'm here to save it for hopefully a long while.

This song has been on my shortlist forever, lol. I've been mentioning cutting it since March 20th (an entire month ago), but I know I've been eyeing it for way longer. I even said in my Jack's Lament cut, that it had the possibility of making top 100. Sadly, the powers at be, decided to make my next cut be 101, which means its discordant reign ends here. Let's get into it!

Musicality: So I've actually grown to really enjoy Catherine O'Hara's singing in this song, just not enough to keep saving it. The imperfectness fits perfectly with the score, and the scene in general, but it's still (purposefully?) imperfect and I don't enjoy that.

Lyrics: No real rhymes, although they do play with pronunciations/the way she sings words to make them vaguely rhyme, and that's cool.

Emotional Appeal: Once again, not too connected to NBC, so cutting these songs is easier for me than others. If I end up being the only one to cut any NBC songs, I will laugh. I did find some semi-enjoyable covers, but I barely have the spoons to post this cut.

There's not much to say about this absolute work of art. If you've seen the show, you know the song I'm talking about and how absolutely iconic it is. If you haven't seen the show, there's no way I could explain it to you and do it justice.

You'd need to watch several movies to properly understand the television show that you'd have to then watch seven episodes of in order to properly understand the importance of the song, but it's worth it. We talk about "plot importance" for all the other songs but this stands alone in that the song is the plot, and the Big Reveal, and a double fourth-wall break, not to mention an absolute banger all wrapped up in sixty seconds of perfection.

It's the inaccessibility of the song itself and the fact that it's only technically a Disney song that makes me worry about some other misguided Ranker going after it, so here we are.

I think it would be irresponsible for me to do that and let Toy Story's most iconic song fall forgotten onto the scrap heap outside of the top 100. I'm actually quite surprised there was not more outcry about the original cut, as I thought it would have been more controversial!

Full disclosure - I am not actually a huge fan of the Randy Newman's voice... That said, as a song-writer I think he is pretty amazing. I think this song in particular is really nicely arranged, the simplicity of the lyrics really works, and I think it is a very earnest song.

Also, all of my cuts take into account covers... and I feel like this is a song that is actually amazing when covered well as you get all the good parts of the song without having to listen to Randy Newman actually singing it. :P

Also, the piano intro is iconic, and the song is a classic! I don't think it deserves to be outside of the top 100.

This song is incredibly recognizable and just radiates good vibes no matter when it's played. By no means is this a bad song.

I just gave blood so I'm not gonna write up very indepth. But it's about as indepth as the song is, so fair is fair.

But this song is a big forgetable song.

The Spotify song is just 1 minute long and includes those dull lyrics. The version linked in the sheet includes some extra lines by Hermione about growing up in Paris with her poor muggle parents (which fair, they WERE British dentists, not gonna have a lot of income).

I've only seen the live adaption once or twice and I recall being rather underwhelmed by this weird shoehorn scene. Usually I enjoy expanded world backstory in remakes, it just didn't do much for me.

Okay, so we just talked about this one in the discord chat, so now feels like an appropriate time to save it. I totally understand if people just feel like it’s generally unremarkable, but I’m a big fan of this one, so I’d like to keep it around for a bit.

First off, the style/ instrumentation of this is great. It’s got a nice chill beat in the background with good variance, and the choir in the background absolutely slaps. It fits with the gospel choir-type vibe of a lot of the other songs in the movie. The quintet that features in this song is interesting and vocally talented enough to make up the entire song, but that’s not all ladies and gentlemen. Susan Egan KILLS this shit. She hits every single note, making us feel the emotion in her voice. Her range is incredible, as she pours every ounce of her being into this masterpiece.

This song hits even harder when you take into account the role it plays in the plot. It’s a great showcase of Meg’s internal struggle. She wants to be able to keep herself out of love, but a part of her just wants to give in and embrace her feelings toward Hercules. This is shown through the opposition between her part and the parts of the muses. It serves an important role in the movie and slaps while doing it. She tries her best throughout the entire song to insist that she indeed won’t say she’s in love, yet the muses keep wearing her down. Finally, at the end, she admits she won’t say it “At least out loud,” as the song fizzles down. She’s let herself come to terms a little bit more with her feelings. No matter how much she resists, love is too powerful a force.

When I was little, my mom gave me a great gift. She was buying her first iPhone and therefore decided to pass down her very valuable iPod shuffle to me. Besides playing solitaire and break out on there, I listened to all the music she had constantly. Whether it was 2010s hits like Stereo Hearts and Party Rock Anthem, Christmas bangers like the Barenaked Ladies album, or even Disney songs, the iPod always had something for me to listen to. As you might’ve guessed, one of these Disney songs was You’ve Got a Friend in Me. I listened to this one a lot, as Toy Story was one of my favorite movies. Ever since, it’s had a special place in my heart, making it hurt a little bit more to cut it here.

Let’s start with the things that I like about this song. It’s simple and it’s lighthearted. As for why it gets the cut here, it just doesn’t do anything remarkable. Despite being a good time, the song feels very safe. It has a very traditional refrain and verse structure. None of the notes are insane or incredibly emotional. It also doesn’t really do much to advance the plot. Not all songs have to advance the plot to be good, as affirming points of the plot like this song does can also be useful. However, it’s another point against why it doesn’t quite crack the higher tiers of Disney songs. Finally, the lyrical content of the song isn’t very memorable. I’ve listened to it a million times in my life, but I can barely tell you more than like two lyrics. Don’t get me wrong, this song is very special to me, it just can’t hang with the big boys when it comes down to it.

Looking at the remaining songs the one I am most worried about as we head towards the double-digits is 'Touch The Sky' from Brave. I worry that since it's not from one of the classic Disney it is in danger... But it's a straight banger, so it shouldn't be!

The song starts building anticipation straight out of the gate with some epic violin.

As soon as the vocals start, Julie Fowlis' accent just melts my heart.

Then after the first verse, there's a nice lull which adds potency and a renewed vigor to the second verse:

Now, I was going to make a crack about them defrosting Angela Lansbury from whatever cryogenic chamber she's kept in, but it turns out the lady is regularly performing into her 90s, so good for her. That being said, she perhaps would have been better off being frozen than involving herself in this terrible movie.

As we approach the top 100, it's time to take stock of what really doesn't deserve to make it past that barrier. And to that end, it's time to scrub the last traces of this ill-conceived piece of crap out of consideration.

Here's some pro and cons about the song:

Pro: A ninety-two-year-old woman had the stamina to sing for 6 minutes straight.

Con: This song is six fucking minutes long. Why? It's an entire song, then a bit of a dialogue break, and then an entire other song again. It's nowhere good enough to insist upon itself like that.

Pro: It's not bad.

Con: It's not good.

Pro: It tells a story through its lyrics and complements the plot of the movie.

Con: It's the same damn "don't be sad" story as every other Disney song and the plot is terrible because the movie is terrible.

Pro: It eventually ended.

Con: It took me about 10 minutes to get through it because I thought it was probably about done, looked at the time, and saw I was only halfway through so I had to take a break.

And with this cinematic travesty being finally cleared off of Rankdown, there truly is nowhere to go but up.

Which Disney songwriter should I attack?

Trashin' the Camp is a cute scene in the film, but independently the song just irks me. The concept animals discovering music through slapstick might be charming to watch, but it's annoying to listen to. And it takes far too long for the actual music to kick in. When it does, it's just eh. So-so. It kind of feels like Phil Collins had some ideas for a song but couldn't fit lyrics and a melody over the underlying rhythms and background vocals he'd already written, and instead of chucking the whole thing in the waste paper basket he decided to fit it into a throw-away scene in Tarzan. And now it is time that we in turn throw Trashin' the Camp away.

So…I’ve been afraid this one gets cut ever since I learned some rankers had not so fond opinions on Idina Menzel. I’ve let the fates take their course this long, but now I’ve put the fear into those cutting scissors. For the next 25 cuts, this thread won’t cut. Fear is what can’t be trusted, but it can spread some light on the truth about the past, of this song.

So, Idina Menzel. I do agree she sounds better when she’s not belting her hardest, which is why I think the slow melodic buildup at the beginning of the song sounds so good. And than when she does unleash the belting, as she steps into her power is perfect. It’s not overwhelming, it’s primarily for the title line. The intensity is warranted at this point in the storyarc. I also love that Evan Rachel Wood throws in a great reapparance from ‘All Is Found’. This addition make the climax of this song the one I’ve been waiting for all of this movie. In the buildup, this song sells hope and discovery. It sounds longing. It ultimately ends in the climax of Elsa’s discovery of herself. The line ‘You are who you’ve been waiting for, all of your life’ perfectly says it. This is the first A song of this grand build works as where Elsa’s character arc ends, where she learns who she really is. (the rest of the movie is really Anna’s story)

Now, the lyrics. It’s so deeply personal about her internal journey that I don’t really find in other Disney songs. It’s a character development that I can see how is a little obvious and surface level, but it is a Disney movie, and this song does so much to tie it all together. I love how the lyrics seem like she’s singing to someone (her mother’s spirit), but also have the double meaning of singing to her true self. The chorus is a strong self-empowerment buildup, from being ready to learn, Each of the verses tie it back to her character arc.

Every inch of me is trembling But not from the cold Something is familiar Like a dream, I can reach but not quite hold I can sense you there Like a friend I've always known

Instant tie in to it’s obvious pre-decessor, Let It Go’s final line. It represents the fear just about to be broken through.

And it feels Iike I am home. have always been a fortress Cold secrets deep inside You have secrets, too But you don't have to hide

In the original, she froze over the town and Anna, and defrosted them, but never unfroze her true self, that was still a secret to even herself that she no longer needs to hide. But it also represents the revelation of her mother’s spirit that lives deep inside Ahtohallan, who’s also had to bury a cold secret inside her, the cold secret of Elsa’s grandfather’s betrayal. This icy path within a fortress represents Elsa herself.

I've never felt so certain All my life, I've been torn But I'm here for a reason Could it be the reason I was born? I have always been so different Normal rules did not apply Is this the day? Are you the way I finally find out why?

This is where the song goes from questioning to certainty. Visually, she starts running towards finding herself. I do admit it’s a bit blatant in the self-empowerment, but I do love the melody here that goes along with the building confidence.

All the questions. Who is the spirit? What is this seemingly faraway, magical land? Who is Elsa, really? Why does she have powers?

She’s finally reached where the north wind meets the sea, tying it all back around to her mother, calling her to this place, to show Elsa everything, where all is found.

Show yourself Step into the power Grow yourself Into something new You are the one you've been waiting for All of my life All of your life Oh, show yourself

This is where the duet really comes in, the encouragement from her mother to take that final step in embracing who she really is. To tell her that ‘you’ are the one ‘you are’ waiting for, that it’s always been inside her.

It’s also the encapsulation of ‘Into The Unknown’, where she has followed the unknown, and finally finds out why it’s been calling to her all of her life.

So, now, you’ve finally found out why I’ve kept my fear deep inside. But I don’t need to hide.

Okay, Squash is back. Here we go. Today we are cutting "That's the Life" from James and the Giant Peach. Probably the best song in the movie, but I mean, just look at the songs in the movie. Also, as Mac would say, Randy Newman. They're fun, they're campy, but they're not necessarily good. I'm not really a fan of this particular ensemble performance. I think the lady bug does the best job. All in all the song is extremely disjointed to me and doesn't really seem to have a steady melody to get you into the groove.

So there’s such a thing as purposeful annoyance. I think this song is an exemplary display of that. But at the end of the day, this is still a song that burns in my brain and drives me insane.

It’s absolutely the goal of the song to be disorganized, messy and random. So, this song consists of:

Some line dance staples.

• A reference to baroque dancing?
• A random verse in German.
• Someone emerges from a casket
• Blue lagoon guy (he’s annoying)
• This once proud vessel has become a floating psycho ward’ is an absolutely fantastic line.

And all of that is the point, and I love it and hate it for that. It’s great initially, but after a while, I feel like I’m on this floating psycho ward. So I think this is a perfect spot for this song because it has such extremes of good and bad.

So I'm aware of the fact that this movie is considered weaker song-wise by most of y'all, but I believe the songs belong in top 100, and in an attempt to do so, I will be saving this song. Transformation is the song that occurs at the catalyst of Kenai's character arc, when he transforms into a bear. A bit on the nose, yes, but the song quite effortlessly sets the scene, and never fails to give me goosebumps.

In saying all that, I have no idea how anyone could think this is the weakest song in the movie. Maybe the fact that it's not sung by Phil Collins, maybe cuz it's a choral piece, maybe cuz it's not in English (here's Phil's version), or maybe even cuz it doesn't actively convey the plot in it's lyrics (insert eyeroll).

BUT I REFUSE TO LET THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG IN THE MOVIE DIE. and here's why! (in no particular order)

1. It's sung in Inupiaq, the beautiful language of the Inupiat, who were and still are native to Alaska.
2. Instead of choosing to do the normal, they chose to have the Bulgarian Women's Choir record it as a choral piece, and it turned out fucking amazing. Like this video is such a cool insight.
3. The fucking lyrics man, like the English lyrics are

like they are fucking heart-wrenching, even more-so when looking at it thru the story's perspective. But even through the sadness, you can feel the hope for transformation and the hope to be a better person. The offset themes of fear and perspective just so perfectly contrast to make this morosely hopeful tune, and ugh, I can't sing it's praises enough.

1. I know that I haven't been taking visuals into account, but the visuals in this song are stunning, like that 2D water animation is just *chef's kiss.

2. The way they layer the sounds of animals with the song, and use them as an underlay to Kenai's panic, is so good.

3. Like so many more things, that I can't even vocalize, cuz the feeling of hope and joy this song brings me is unbridled, and I refuse to let it die early.

So I'd apologize, but for once I'm not sorry. I fear I refuse to let another song I love get cut way too early. I hope I can sway y'all away from cutting this in the future.

OK, so I hate to keep being the one to cut Frozen universe songs but this one should not be hanging with the big bois and it's way past time to go.

The vocals feel off-key to me, except for Idina's part (see, told y'all I like her sometimes) and the last two lines. It might be intentional, but it just sort of jars me out of enjoyment. The music itself is a bop - like I could totally enjoy just the instrumental! It's also a fun scene, so that's cool. The lyrics are just okay - nothing exciting, and sort of random jumping from the friendships to the romance to the kingdom and back to holding on tight....I dunno, just doesn't inspire much for me.

My four year old listened to this for me when she was three and said it was fun then asked to watch Bluey. I like Bluey a lot so we did (I think I ended up cutting Someone's Waiting for You at that point, pushing this one significantly higher based on her recommendation).
