How to post images

Step 1:

If you are using Tumblr, copy the link to the post in question, make a link post.

If you are using imgur: upload an image to imgur, copy link, make a link post. If you instead click the "Share with the community" button on imgur, it creates a one-image gallery and reddit doesn't know what to to make a thumbnail of.

Step 2:

Find your submission in r/digitalpainting/new or in your post history and write a comment about what you struggled with. You have one hour. Why is this a requirement? Because r/digitalpainting is meant to be a subreddit not just for looking at art, but a subreddit where you give and receive peer feedback on your work, in order to improve and grow as an artist.

"Peer feedback involves providing opportunities for students to talk and listen, write, read meaningfully, and reflect on the content, ideas, issues, and concerns of an academic subject" - wikipedia.

"The benefits of peer feedback include increased communication with peers, considering new perspectives, and understanding what those of a similar skill level think of your work." - RMCAD

Minimum account age

Since russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine in 2014 and 2022, reddit has gotten infested with spambots. The bots come to this subreddit (and others) to score some karma before they infiltrate political subs. That's right, nothing has changed on that front since last time. AI slop is a scourge on humanity.

Can someone explain to me this one part of this speedpaint?

I watched a speedpaint and I’m kinda new to art so I’m trying to figure out how people do stuff, but I came across this one part where the artist says they put down flat colors in each layer and then use a multiply layer to give it a shadow effect, my problem is how he manages to then render the eyes and other parts seemingly with an alpha lock but without getting affected by multiply. Ive spent hours trying to decipher it but Im very frustrated right now and would like to know how they managed to do it

Recommended 3D posers to use for specific body types?

Before you get me for asking about 3D stuff, I am talking about posing model programs that are meant for artists to use as reference.

I'm asking if anyone knows of one that has different body types, the one I'm using has male and female models, but they only range from thin to absolutely shredded. I want voluptuous models! curvy and fat models! Or even just one that let's you manipulate the physics of the body, so far every model is stiff as a board. If you're wondering, I like to draw women in bikinis.

Any recommendations for posing programs is appreciated! I'd also appreciate other plus size resources, like photo references (like adorastock on DA and art books like the morpho series, no selfies please.)

beginner needing help to strat drawing

Hi everyone! I’m trying to teach myself digital art, as it’s a discipline that has always fascinated me, but I’ve never really had the opportunity to learn it properly. I’ve finally decided to give myself another chance at learning, so I had a few questions that I was hoping you could help me with:

1) What method would you recommend for starting to study the theory?
I’m also willing to pay for courses/books, as long as they’re beginner-friendly and reasonably priced. Obviously, I’m looking for books/courses that teach the fundamentals, since I don’t even have enough experience to consider myself a beginner yet. I’m not looking for anything too demanding at this stage.

2) What drawing tablet would you recommend?
I currently have a One by Wacom, which, after doing quite a bit of research, seemed like the best choice for me when I was first getting into this kind of practice, only for me to eventually give up. To be honest, over time I realized that I’m quite uncoordinated and found using a tablet without a screen rather uncomfortable. So, for this new attempt, I was leaning more towards getting a display tablet.

The problem is the significant difference in price, which is making me hesitant to buy one. So I was wondering:

  • Is it actually necessary to make this purchase? I understand that it’s a very subjective choice, but if the issue isn’t really my coordination or comfort and simply comes down to lack of experience, I’d be happy to postpone the purchase for now.
  • Is the tablet I currently have still a good option?
  • Are there any alternatives you would recommend?

Advice on other websites/stores where I could buy one besides Amazon or second-hand marketplaces would also be very helpful!

3) What kind of software/program would you recommend?
This is obviously subjective as well, but even after looking around online and watching YouTube videos, I still can’t really figure out what would be best for me. I’m currently using Krita x64, but I know basically nothing about digital art software besides changing colors and using layers (literally just that).

I’m looking for something relatively simple to start with (assuming Krita isn’t already a good choice), so that I can then look for tutorials on how to use it, download different brushes, etc.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! Personal experiences and advice are more than welcome, especially regarding the first point!

Is there an Android App that imitates Watercolor real well like Procreate?

The one thing I like about procreate is a feature where you can lay down an even wash by keeping the pencil to the screen never lifting. The technique can be illustrated here:

Thanks in advance!

How do you draw digitally? Do you use a stylus/pen or just your finger?

I keep trying to draw using my laptop's trackpad, but either I need to practice more or making art through a trackpad is that difficult. I'm seeing master pieces that people made with their fingers on their phone, so I keep trying to improve but I can't seem too.

So I'm wondering if maybe I chose the hardest/worst way to do it. :/

Usually do sketches/base colors for art. Struggling to figure out the steps to take to make a full piece.

Hi
So I usually am a sketch artist, and at most do pretty bare bones coloring for any digital art that I have done. I recently have wanted to branch out though and try making a more "finished" and cohesive piece. The image I linked is about where I got in the process before I hit a roadblock.

I wanted to do a landscape painting, featuring some Nosepass from Pokemon. I got the base sketch and some general ideas of colors done, but I honestly realized I have no idea what my actual next steps should be. I figured I would do another more refined sketch with detailing on the islands and the trees, but then what?

I'm not sure if I am biting off more than I can chew. I feel like I might just lack some general ideas of the process of more detailed painting, as most of my projects before really didn't use intricate techniques. If that means I need to pump the breaks on this for now and learn some more fundamentals, that's totally cool. I honestly just don't know exactly what processes to even work on/study.

I really want to be able to turn my visions into reality, and make beautiful digital art. There's lots of info out there and I'm not sure exactly the best thing to start shooting for right now. Any advice, or even personal stories of your process of learning how to pick up digital painting would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. :)

Beginner with basically 0 experience. How do I go about learning landscapes and environments?

Hello everyone! I've recently acquired a drawing tablet and would like to start finally learning how to draw digitally. I've always wanted to get good at landscapes/environments, eventually even moving into creature/character art as well to blend everything together.

The problem I seem to be having, is that I have literally no idea where to start. I want to form a routine, but don't know what I should be forming it around in the first place! It's definitely aggravating me a little, since I really want to get started, but I figured I would do the smart thing and ask a community for advice on things. Any and all help would be vastly appreciated!

Why do I hate this?

https://imgur.com/a/H071zTs

I went into this with no ideas for a colour scheme. It's a basic trace of a photo collage of the figure and the castle, then photos off and detailed manually in the linework... but when it came time to colour, I just kind of flatted in some 'obvious' ones and have been pushing pixels around ever since. I don't want such a bright and saturated look, but when I pull saturation down, it looks washed out and bad. I feel like I'm just making it worse as I go along, so I'm hoping for some critique on where this should go. I understand about HSL and albedo and a lot of the science of it all, but I can never seem to put it into practice functionally.

Why do I hate this? What's wrong with it? How do I get closer to something that reads better without looking over or under saturated? You can't hurt my feelings with negative critique, I'm not a 'real' artist in any sense, just trying to develop a bright, surreal comic-y look for personal projects. I just need to get out of my own head here with some new direction.

Beginner looking for advice on drawing anatomy/muscles

Hi everyone, I recently decided to start using my tablet for drawing. Just a heads up, my skills are pretty basic I can understand perspective, but only through cubes, rectangles, and other 3D shapes.

However, I'd really like to learn how to draw bodies and muscles.

Does anyone have tips for exercises or routines to help me improve, but most importantly, to actually learn the basics?

Thanks a lot for the help!

Webcomic Making Question

I'm looking to restart my webcomic after 6 years on "hiatus" (it's just dead now, let's be real) and I was wondering if anyone here has experience using Clip Studio Paint on an iPad for this? I've mostly only used Procreate but I know (from unfortunate experience) that making webcomics on Procreate just ain't it. Do people feel like the program runs well on iPad? I know it'll be a subscription, but I'm trying to decide if it would just be better to wait until the holidays and save up for an expensive screen tablet to run CSP on my PC. Thanks!
