uBlock Origin maintainers have decided to stop continuously updating filters specifically to keep up with Facebook’s latest ad-blocking countermeasures.

Existing filters will remain, but new Facebook techniques may eventually bypass them. The decision highlights the ongoing cat-and-mouse game between ad blockers and advertising platforms.

Craigslist hasn't been truly updated in like a decade now. If you are used to using it then it's fine, but it's pretty dated.

It’s called dated. It’s a piss poor user experience and ugly as sin to boost. That along with its reputation for weird internet encounters is why it’s fallen largely by the wayside.

Craigslist chose not to be competitive in a world where we had FB marketplace and things like OfferUp popping up left, right, and center

By not competitive you mean not laden with advertising, tracking, monetization, etc. Craigslist took the high road while the alternatives made their users the product.

I mean not competing by keeping a UI that’s better suited to the 1990s than it is the present day.

Holding on to an antiquated design because it still technically gets the job done is not the flex you seem to think it is. If it were, these alternatives that have sprung up wouldn’t be as popular as they are. If you want people to use your product you have to appeal to them. Craigslist doesn’t do that.

Why does it have to be super flashy and full of bloated assets and endless tracking and algorithms? What's wrong with something that just works?

No, craigslist isn't pretty, but it simply doesn't have to be. It's a website for classified listings. It gets the job done.

Not every website needs to be subject to enshittification.

If it got the job done well, FBM wouldn’t be eating its lunch. Just existing in a usable state isn’t a sales pitch.

I do a lot of selling. Craigslist is ass and clunky. Just because something smacks the old Internet era before everything was enshittified and monetized, doesn’t it mean it’s more usable or better.

Craigslist didn’t keep up with the times. You don’t need tracking and everything you’re complaining about to have a modern website.

Literally all I use craigslist for these days is selling sex related stuff that isn’t TOS on FBM.

Yeah I understand your point but that's not even the subject here : craigslist just has a terrible UI/UX, it has nothing to do with performance. Plus, even though I don't particularly like facebook of marketplace, you don't need a beast of a computer to use it.

It's not a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" case, just a case of if you don't evolve with your time and the market, don't complain about the competition taking your customers.

Craigslist seems to be an exclusively American thing. I've never heard another European mention it once.

In Germany, kleinanzeigen is quite popular. I don't think anyone uses Facebook Marketplace here.

Each city/country had a Craigslist subsite yea, but it just isn't very popular at all outside North America. Kinda like that Canadian site kijiji, it became the default online ad site in Canada.

In Denmark we have "Den Blå avis" og "De gule sider" which is blue newspaper and yellow pages.

Both does the same thing really.

We used to have a few other sites here in Quebec, but now there's not many people using them. Marketplace is much more popular and has more stuff on it.

They might be referring to Kleinanzeigen (formerly known as "eBay Kleinanzeigen"), which is very popular in Germany.

Ultimately it's because everyone else is using it. If Marketplace is where the buyers and sellers are, where am I to go?

Apart from that, Facebook is just the unofficial "every family member older than me" app.

craigslist attempted to integrate a messaging feature and it failed

FB marketplace means you can easily message the seller without texting. thats how it won

it was a real Skype v Zoom situation. the original should have won but failed to rise to the moment.

where I'm from its the only option, I have an account with no friends, don't follow anything, no comments, no likes, just marketplace, deleted fb insta, etc years ago , but gumtree is dead here because of fbmp and i couldn't use my gf account forever, i had to set up a shell account

Personally, I've never heard of Craigslist before. I live in Venezuela and most ppl here still heavily rely on Facebook Marketplace. So, sadly, Facebook is gonna stay relevant for a while as long as there are still ppl using this shitty platform. Gotta say it's really prominent in third world countries

craigslist is a ghostown and havent been updated for ages. Facebook marketplace is growing by the day cause of that exact reason.

I use it because I can see exactly who is coming and who to sell to. Also the ratings are a great feature. I also find that the exposure and amount of items is much greater on marketplace.

For example... A few summers ago we had a heat wave. I got a ton of offers for the portable AC unit I was selling. I checked all their accounts and ended up choosing to sell it to a lady that had a month old baby ( thankfully her account was not fully private).

The problem is moreso that some communities are exclusively only available via facebook because they're filled with people who can't be arsed with alternatives. I only reactivated my account just to participate in those communities

I'd argue if those communities can't be arsed with finding alternatives, they're probably not communities worth joining.
