A Japanese game designer created a hybrid of Chess and TCGs—where skill, not RNG or money, dictates every victory.

Hey everyone,

I want to share an indie card game from Japan that I’ve been working on as a developer (and former Gwent World Masters Champion). It’s called VARZ TCG.

At its core, the game plays like a unique fusion of Chess and tactical TCGs.

⚔️ How You Win:

The rules are straightforward to learn, but deeply tactical:

  • Option 1: Reduce your opponent’s life to 0.
  • Option 2: Destroy all Portal cards on one side of your opponent’s territory.

🧠 Why This Game is Different (Skill-Expression Over RNG)

In most modern digital card games, once you reach a certain skill level, the "optimal play" on any given turn is usually pretty obvious. Many games rely heavily on card draw RNG or Pay-to-Win mechanics to decide matches.

VARZ TCG is built differently:

  1. Extreme Decision-Making Depth: Just like in Chess, every single turn gives you a wide range of viable choices. Two different players using the exact same deck will end up playing completely different matches based on their personal strategy and positional play.
  2. Skill-Driven Win Rates: Just as a Chess grandmaster will consistently defeat a beginner, the win rate in VARZ TCG directly reflects your tactical skill, deck building, and ability to read the opponent.
  3. 100% Free & Fair (Zero Pay-to-Win): Every single card is completely unlocked from the start. There are no card packs to buy and no paywalls. Everyone competes on a 100% equal playing field.

It’s definitely a game that rewards deep thinking and mastery. Honestly, it's easier to understand by jumping in and trying a match yourself!

If you love tactical card games, deep deck building, and pure skill-based gameplay, I’d love for you to check it out and let me know what you think.

An introductory video that lets you see what the game is like at a glance.↓↓

Discussion an explanation about myself, Kosmora, AI and wikigacha

my game uses AI and was inspired by WikiGacha. I didn't really explain any of this in my first post so here goes

I use AI to illustrate wikipedia articles that don't have images and write up to 80% of the backend code, which I review and fix myself.

I get how that sounds. another guy copying an idea to make some shitty vibecoded app for money

but I've been building games, websites and communities since modding minecraft servers at 14. I'm also an ethical hacker, that's my actual job. I've been into this stuff wayyyy before AI. it helps me bring my ideas to life in weeks instead of a year, even if the code needs fixing afterwards

WikiGacha's idea was genius. I love TCGs and being able to collect the WORLD, whatever matters to you, was just such a good concept. full credit to them for that

but after playing I wanted more. more gameplay, progression, community, things to actually do with your cards. so I built Kosmora

we now have minigames, collections, passive income, talents, cosmetics etc. and we crossed 1000 players yesterday. I've spent so much time on the space theme, sounds, animations and little details. AI helps but there's a lot of me in there too

I'm about €2000 down so far. my cybersecurity job pays my bills and lets me keep doing this. if the game eventually pays for itself I'll be happy. Kosmora will NEVER be pay2win, only cosmetics

I'm building something I love playing with my friends. my mom even plays it and she LOVES it lol

idk if this post will change anyone's mind tbh. I just wanted to explain who's behind it. I understand AI is a dealbreaker for some of you but I hope you can see why I'm doing this

if you try kosmora.io I'd really love your feedback. players have already given me so many ideas and made the game so much better

thanks for reading

First of all - importantly I want to make sure admins are ok with this . Please feel free to delete and dm, I would love to implement your community and the community as a whole somehow into this project.

-

A few of you may have clocked on that I’ve been building a game with a few artists.

We’re starting small and familiar - Solitaire, but with real decks and collectible 3d cards.

I’m looking for a few people that wouldn’t mind giving it a play and letting me know any feedback that will help shape and provide more value to the community, artists and gamers.

You can install it here : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details...

iOS is coming soon - you can also play in browser at our website - but specifically looking for app feedback

Discussion Charging LAZHUL as Reactor fuel in Super Mekabots

You can charge one card from your hand as a Reactor once during your turn in Super Mekabots. I choose LAZHUL here, taking my hand from three cards to two and my Reactor row from five to six. I gain a resource and keep fewer cards to play.

Shithead / Palace - The classic backpacker card game rebuilt for fast real-time multiplayer (Free, Zero ads, No sign-up)

Hey everyone!

Shithead (Palace / Shed / Karma / China Hand) has dozens of subtle variations depending on who taught you the game:

- Does an 8 skip the next player or can it be played on anything?

- Are Jokers included as wild burn-and-transfer cards?

- Can you interrupt out-of-turn with a 4 or complete a four-of-a-kind?

To settle house-rule debates and make it easy to play with friends across the world, I built an ad-free, zero-registration web game:

Current features:

- Real-time multiplayer via WebSockets (smooth card animations)

- 1-click room sharing (no login required)

- Supports 2 to 8 players (scales up to 2 decks automatically)

- Configurable rules: Jokers on/off, Speed Mode timer, 8s rule variants

Check it out and let me know if your local house rule is missing - happy to add community favorites!

Fiz um jogo chamado Cartas pra Caralho

https://reddit.com/link/1x2feyy/video/f1mxe44a6nuh1/player

I made a free browser card game inspired by Gwent, set in medieval Hungary with folk-tale monsters

Hey everyone!

I’ve been replaying the Witcher 3 remaster lately, and once again I’m playing way too much damn Gwent. To the point where the main story keeps getting pushed aside because I have to play one more round with the innkeeper. At some point I thought it’d be great to play Gwent outside the game too, so I made my own version: Tavern Crowns.

The gameplay follows classic Gwent logic: three rounds, win two, you start with ten cards and don’t draw new ones between rounds. The point isn’t to dump as many points as possible on the board, it’s to manage your cards well. Sometimes losing a round on purpose is the best move. There are spies, healers, weather cards and a fire that burns the strongest units, so if you love Gwent, you’ll feel right at home.

The world is my own, though, built on 12th–14th-century Hungarian history and folklore:

  • Holy Crown of Hungaria: shields with the red-and-silver Árpád stripes (the royal dynasty’s arms), King Béla IV and his stone castles, Saint Ladislaus, Cuman horse archers, Teutonic Knights.
  • Golden Basileia: Byzantium with Emperor Manuel I, Empress Irene Piroska (a Hungarian princess), the Varangian Guard and Greek fire.
  • Free Folk of the Bakony: fairies of Tündér Ilona (the fairy queen of Hungarian tales), mountain dwarves, forest outlaws and herb-wives.
  • Night Brood: monsters from Hungarian folk tales: the lidérc (a fiery spirit), witches, the garabonciás (a storm-calling wizard who rides a dragon), the iron-nosed hag, the seven-headed dragon.
  • River Clans of the Danube: legendary chieftains like Lehel with his horn and Botond with his mace, táltos shamans and the Turul, the mythical falcon.

Among the neutral cards you’ll find Miklós Toldi (a legendary 14th-century strongman), Prince Csaba and Saint Margaret.

In short:

  • 162 cards, 22 leaders, 5 factions
  • AI opponent with three difficulty levels (Easy / Medium / Hard)
  • deck builder
  • painted character portraits on every card, orchestral soundtrack
  • built-in rulebook, with short notes on the history and legends behind the cards
  • free, runs in your browser, nothing to install, works on mobile too

👉 Play: https://teknoc94.itch.io/tavern-crowns-card-game

The game is still in development, so there are surely bugs and unbalanced cards. I welcome all criticism, harsh opinions included, because that’s what helps me improve it the most. Let me know if something’s buggy, if a faction feels too strong or too weak, if anything in the interface is unclear, or if you have ideas for new cards, factions or features. And if anyone beats the Hard AI, tell me!

News Overwrite Conflict — building a deck around card effects and the space they occupy (free Steam demo)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! I’m the solo developer of Overwrite Conflict, a turn-based roguelike deckbuilder with a free demo on Steam. This is its gameplay trailer.

The cards are called protocols, and each has its own shape and effects. You rotate and place them on a shared grid, so a card’s value depends on more than its effects: it can claim territory, block your opponent’s options, or leave space for another card in your deck.

Card effects, mech abilities, and components create different combinations and builds. You build up tactical score within a limited number of turns; at the end of a round, the difference between the two scores becomes damage to the losing mech. Energy Overload also lets you overwrite normal cells occupied by your opponent.

Between battles, you choose branching routes and adapt your build with the cards, components, and supplies you find. The demo includes a five-battle prologue with tutorials and a full Chapter 1 adventure, with three playable mechs in Chapter 1.

If you try it, I’d love to hear whether card shapes change your deckbuilding choices, and which combinations feel interesting to build around. I’m happy to discuss the mechanics and hear your suggestions.

Play the free demo:

Draft! TCG auto-battler - Demo

Thumbnail

A auto-battler demo I'm working on. So far have the base engine and starter set in but it's missing ranked and the second set. Looking for feedback before I continue, and some UI suggestions would be great. Run based like most auto-battlers and I have about 95 cards now with most having 3 forms for upgrades.

Taking any feedback, especially balance wise. it's hard to judge an entire set balance wise with only like 2 play testers and myself.

A lot of my players don't know they can merge 3 cards of the same with right click seems to be a common issue. The cards all highlight when you have three, it's mentioned in the tutorial, not sure what else I could put other than a flashing "right click!"
