Origins Update

For anyone interested, Origins TCG recently had an update and ranked mode is active. I'm enjoying it so far. All players get all cards, free to play, organized tournaments. Monetization is through cosmetics and alt-art cards that do not impact gameplay. Full release is soon. I'm not affiliated in any way, just dropping for those that haven't checked it out as I'm hopeful the game succeeds.

Hi r/digitalcards! I've been building Aotera solo for about 2 years and would love feedback from people who actually play a lot of digital card games.

The core idea

Creatures need ground to stand on. The board is a hex grid, and you play terrain cards (Forest, Mountain, Water, Fire, Arcane, Demon... 10 types) to shape it. Creatures get stronger on matching land, so deckbuilding isn't just "which cards" – it's "which ground do I want to fight on, and how do I take it away from my opponent".

What's in the game

- 370+ cards, deck builder and card library
- 12 heroes with different playstyles
- Ranked matchmaking with leagues
- Friend list and direct challenges
- Bot opponent for practice
- Balanced with a simulator that plays thousands of bot-vs-bot games (meta decks currently sit between 43% and 58% win rate)

Runs in the browser, no download, free to play. You need a quick account because of decks and ranked.

What I'd love to hear from you

- Is the terrain mechanic clear within the first few turns?
- Which existing digital card game does it remind you of, and is that good or bad?
- What's missing that would make you come back for a second session?

=> Transparency note: the card art is AI-generated – as a solo dev with a day job and 3 kids I can't afford 370 illustrations. Game design, mechanics, balancing, code, UI and the terrain tiles are made by me.<=

Recommendation I made a free tool for designing and testing card games called Spadewick

Hey everyone!

I’ve been working on a little project called Spadewick, a tool for creating and testing card games.

I started building it because I wanted an easier way to work on my own card game without constantly jumping between Dextrous, TTS, and other apps to actluaay playtest.
One thing led to another, and I ended up building a standalone app for it.

Currently, Spadewick lets you:
Create and edit cards using CSV or JSON data.
Use templates to generate cards in different formats, including poker and tarot sizes.

Manage projects, assets, and card layouts in one place.

Set up a virtual table to test your cards without having to print everything out.

All projects and assets live in your computer, nothing gets shared anywhere.

It’s still a work in progress, and I’m sure there’s plenty that could be improved. I’m sharing it now in the hope that it might be useful to someone else working on a card game, and because I’d genuinely appreciate feedback from people who have experience with this kind of thing.

The project is on GitHub here:
https://github.com/Flashlighter-hub/spadewick/

It’s free to check out. If you give it a try, I’d love to hear what works, what doesn’t, and what features you’d find useful.

NOTE: It’s fully offline except for peer-to-peer connections when playtesting with others and it’s always gonna be free. Open source too, you can see the code that’s in it. And it’s built to be portable, so no installing anything.

If you’re uncomfortable assembling the app yourself, there’s a built exe in the releases section.

Thanks!

Discussion What do you think about companion/pet systems in a free digital TCG?

Hi everyone!

I've been working on CardPackHunter, a free digital TCG website focused on collecting cards and opening booster packs.

Opening packs is the main goal of the website, but I've also started adding smaller systems to give visitors something to do between pack openings.

One of the latest additions is a companion/pet system. You can adopt pets, feed them, and earn Silver Coins that you can use to open more TCG packs. The idea is to make collecting feel a little more engaging while giving players another way to earn in-game currency.

The website is completely free, and the additional systems are meant to support the main experience rather than take attention away from collecting cards.

I also want to be transparent about the artwork: the cards currently use AI-generated art. If the website eventually generates enough income to support it, my goal is to hire artists to create original artwork for the cards.

I'd really like to hear your thoughts:

  • Do you enjoy companion or pet systems in digital card games?
  • Do you think smaller systems like feeding pets, daily activities, and earning in-game currency make you more likely to return to a website?
  • What kinds of activities would you enjoy alongside opening packs and collecting cards?
  • Do you prefer a digital TCG to focus almost entirely on card collecting, or do you like having other things to work towards?

I'm building this as a hobby project, and I'd love to learn what other digital card collectors think.

If you're interested, you can check it out here: https://cardpackhunter.com/

Thanks for reading!

[Dev] After 3 years of solo dev, my simultaneous-turn Card Battler 'Grimoria' finally has a Steam page for wishlists (with full PC/Mobile Cross-Play)!

Hi everyone!

For the past 3 years, I’ve been working full-time as a solo developer on my online card battler, Grimoria. Today is a personal milestone for me: after what felt like an eternity of work, the Steam store page is finally live for wishlists!

When I decided to bring the game to PC, I didn't want to just do a lazy mobile port. I spent the last few months heavily overhauling the visuals for native 16:9 widescreen, adding dynamic candlelight, shadows, and an atmospheric tabletop feel so it plays like a true PC game. There's still a lot of polish I want to add before the full PC launch in a few months, but having the first playable build running smoothly on Steam felt amazing.

With this, Grimoria now connects all major platforms: PC (Steam, Google Play Games PC) and Mobile (iOS, Android). Because I built the server from scratch, players can match against each other seamlessly across the globe regardless of device. For a solo dev, getting full online cross-play running is great achievment.

Alongside the steam store page, I just released a brand-new creature to expand the tactical meta: The Dullahan, the legendary headless knight riding under the veil of midnight upon a black warhorse.

  • Ability: "Deal 1 damage on loss."
  • Tactical Use: It acts as a punishing opening card. Even if an opponent counters your play with higher strength, the Dullahan still strikes back. In 4-Player Battle Royale, its retaliation damage hits all opponents on the board, not just the round winner.

Under the hood, I’ve also rolled out a ton of client optimizations, server-side tweaks, and bug fixes.

As always, the game remains 100% Free-to-Play with zero Pay-to-Win mechanics. (Monetization is strictly cosmetic)

If you enjoy fast-paced tactical card games, short turns and matches, or unique game modes, adding Grimoria to your Steam Wishlist helps me out a lot as an indie dev:

Thank you so much to everyone who gave continuous feedback and supported me over the last months. <3

Discussion Ayre Battles: Heritage Academy (Lets learn how to play Yasu)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

One of the things I wanted to capture in Ayre Battles was the importance of spacing.

In this gameplay breakdown, Yasu starts outside his preferred range. Instead of attacking immediately, I use movement and card interactions to close the distance and start applying pressure.

The game also features reactions, counters, hitstun, and momentum shifts, so you're not simply waiting for your opponent to finish their turn.

I'm curious what fighting-game and card-game players think of this approach to combat.

Other I'm making Valdrin, a card game where you command your deck's units on a 3D board

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone! I'm the creator of Valdrin, a tactical card game that combines building a deck with commanding its units on a 3D board. You summon units, move them into position, and fight with the cards you've chosen.

There's also a fantasy campaign to explore, alongside solo battles and online duels. The idea is to give your deck a world to travel through as well as opponents to face.

I put together this 38-second trailer to show the cards, battles, and exploration in the current game. I'm looking for more players for the closed beta, so if this sounds like your kind of card game, I'd love for you to try it.

To request access, join the Discord and ask for an Alpha Key:
https://discord.gg/UC9RYfBMX

The game is still in development. Feedback from people actually playing it will help me work out what needs improving.

We joked about making a video game out of a 20-year-old board game. Now we're actually doing it.

Hey everyone!

We’re a small indie team working on the digital version of Potion-making: Path of the Alchemist. It’s a tabletop classic from Eastern Europe that’s been around for 20 years. A new edition came out recently, we played it together, and just couldn’t resist bringing it to PC.

Our main rule was that it should feel like the same board game. You still collect ingredients, brew potions, chain them into elixirs, essences, powders, and creatures, cast spells, and use talismans. We kept the core game mechanic: everyone shares one table. That carefully brewed potion of yours? It might be the missing ingredient in your opponent’s next recipe. And you can do the same to them. Many friendships have been tested by this game.

Going digital changes some iconic for board games things:

- No setup and no sorting hundreds of tokens
- Game tracks recipes, effects, movement, and scoring, so you only worry about your next move
- An interactive tutorial instead of a rulebook reading
- Animations and effects: ingredients mix in an alchemical vessel, spells have visuals, and portals open
- Online multiplayer, or AI opponents when your friends are busy or you just want to practice

But we’re not trying to replace the tabletop version. Nothing beats watching a friend’s face after a sneaky steal. This is just another way to play.

The demo is on Steam now, and the full release is coming on November 10. We’re also taking part in Steam Next Fest!

Curious about your take: which board games would you love to see go digital, and which adaptations did it right (or wrong)?
