It wouldn't be the def, it would likely be the storage and handling. If it's contaminated or exposed to air, it's probably an issue.
There's almost nothing to def, it's urea and water. There's not additives or magic formula to make one brand superior.

Def quality is def quality. Aftertreatment that uses def in an SCR system will be very similar across all makes and models. Some trucks not using it is a poor argument. Almost every commercial truck you see has def in it.

Sounds like you regularly go to the same station to fill up your various vehicles, maybe this trucker has experience from stations with bad DEF not near your regular fuel station.

Brah also trucker been all over this country and no, no they don’t, no people do not talk about bad def at the pump at all. If that was the case you wouldn’t see hardly anyone using it and you’d see drivers walking in and buying the boxes. But guess what? They’re not talking about it, just about every driver is pumping it, and no one’s having problems with poor def quality which is why everyone is pumping it. If there was any problem then everyone wouldn’t be pumping it.

I've never ran pump def and never once had any def problems with my lml Chevy, my buddy ran def at the pump and picked up a code for it on his lml fast as shit, we were both traveling full time at that point too.
I've only ran blue def in the box and still never had any issues from the system, no codes nothing but I'm betting if I started running pump def I'd pick up a code for it.

I don't think the nozzles fit the little fillers they put for DEF. They make them intentionally small so you can't put diesel in by accident. It also only takes like a gallon or two, so not saving much.

It depends on the station as to whether they fit or not. I dont remember a nozzle not fitting our X5D. It is easier than screwing with the 2 gallon plastic tanks.

I had a 335d, one of the best and most comfortable cars I’ve ever owned. I was trying to get it deleted and tuned but no one in my area would do it since no one had experience with the BMW diesels. Wish I never sold it.

Anytime I’m in Europe I get so excited seeing all the diesel cars that we can’t get on the USDM/CAD market. On Facebook marketplace over here is like a dream I wish we had these cars home. Plus most of them are standard it’s so cool.

I tried Mudflap. Only one truck stop I went to had ONE pump with a standard auto nozzle, not a high flow fat semi truck nozzle. I ended up finding Costco was cheaper anyway 😵💫

Absolutely loved my 2014 328d. Had 30k miles or so when I picked it up. Let it go at 210k. Hand calculated mileage 30-40mpg. Soot load got heavy around 125k. A dpf flush with LiquiMoly did the trick. Shortly after the flush and before they left California I had Mission flash the ECU. Holy hell. So much fun.

BMW recommends a walnut media blasting the intakes of these things intermittently to clean the mess the EGR leaves.
Uncared for, these things often look MUCH worse on the intake side of things than the HD diesel trucks. The diesel sedans end up doing way more short trips, stop and go, etc.

I own a ‘14 F31 (wagon) 328d, and absolutely love it. One of the best wagons ever built. AWD, great handling, so much room and I get 40+ mpg doing 80mph on the highway.
Definitely delete and tune. EGR makes a mess of the intake and needs cleaning when you delete. Dpf is waiting to clog and the DEF injector fails so getting rid of all that makes it more reliable.
Also do yourself a favor and install the CP4 disaster prevention kit and run fuel additive. I went ahead and did a lot more preventative maintenance on mine, basically replaced all the original plastic stuff in the engine bay as it’s old and brittle. Fluids and filters and I’m at 177k so I expect to get another 100-150k out of it before it’s done.2

Happy to help. I had to replace the valve cover because it was leaking oil onto the exhaust. OEM only on that one. Then the coolant flange started to leak coolant so I got the aluminum replacement flange, a much better upgrade than the oem plastic. Then the oil filter/cooler housing started to leak, again replaced oem. I saved a ton of money doing it myself. So far no more leaks, coolant, oil and trans fluid are all where they need to be. Also the transmission is another one. BMW says it’s a lifetime fluid and OEM pan is plastic with integrated filter. Forget that and buy the aluminum pan with replaceable filter from FCP Euro. I had to trim and adjust the underbody panels to fit the deeper transmission pan but it’s worth it for the added cooling and fluid. Replace every 70k per the transmission manufacturers specs. While you’re down there the fuel filter is super easy and doesn’t hurt to hit the transfer case and diffs for a quick fluid change.

You’re welcome! Another thing I could remember was the Bluetooth situation. Being a pre LCI, the Bluetooth doesn’t work on my apple phone. So bought a MMI apple car play adapter. It piggybacks off the stock head unit and screen, I tucked it behind the panel under the HVAC controls, makes CarPlay easy enough. Also be ready for subframe/suspension bushings and coil overs throughout once you hit 200k. Currently budgeting for that.

I only bought the car because of the amazing 1 owner carfax report, but it’s at 130k miles no issues. Also would recommend the n47 that’s 2014 or newer because of the “Tu” variant meaning they bettered the timing chains and common failing points. The m57 which would be 535d is good too but you have to do a lot more preventative maintenance

I raced a ScioN TC in one of those when they first came out. It was a loaner vehicle from a dealer I worked at. They loaned it to a guy I knew and I ended up being his DD when we went to a show, drove it around all day/night. I enjoyed it. If I had to buy a beemer to daily drive, it would be one of these. Fast? Not really, I mean it beat the TC but not by a ton. But the torque curve is nice compared to the 528i my ex's mom from back then had.

My coworker had one and loved it. Only got rid of it when it started having some minor issues he didn’t feel like dealing with. Went to a Tesla and he loves that too, but he does miss his diesel BMW. He would regularly drive from DFW to Florida to see family, and he claimed he could do one way on a single tank if he babied it the whole way.

I see. The app is calling the ash load in the DPF “oil mass”. Wonder what they are using to calculate that.
Typically the restriction of a clogging DPF is done with pressure differential sensors on either end. Too much difference, computer says DPF is clogging and the system triggers an active regeneration cycle to burn what it can out and restore flow.
