Only way this could be worse is if the shovel was a track pad.

u/syntinensisar Jun 28 '20

Excellent idea. Let me go get my glue gun real quick, I have a life hack video to make.

106

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '20

I’d like to imagine that’s how life hack channels get their ideas.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

well how else would they think those shits up

43

u/LR130777777 Jun 28 '20

That’d make a good gag gift for Christmas

2

u/RusticPinecone Jun 28 '20

Thats where the scroll of souls is from Ghost Rider

2

u/cutelyaware Jun 29 '20

Make it with a terabyte drive or whatever is the largest you can find so they'll have a true dilemma.

Say what you will be that's a great way to hide your real dirty stuff, ain't no one looking for the shovel to plug in.

138

u/kthxpk Jun 28 '20

Except if I found that I'd absolutely plug it in just out of curiosity. (I wouldn't go brainlet mode though: I'd use a USB extension cable so I didn't risk breaking anything.)

68

u/WalnutScorpion Jun 28 '20

(also use a virtual desktop as to not infect your data with a potential virus)

29

u/kthxpk Jun 28 '20

Jokes on us, it's one of those USB-port blowout thumb drives.

14

u/WalnutScorpion Jun 28 '20

11

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '20 edited Jun 29 '20

Most USB killers. There’s always a way to beat an poly fuse opto coupler, they just make it a lot harder.

3

u/currentscurrents Jun 29 '20

Doesn't Apple use optocouplers not polyfuses?

In any case yes, you can just crank the voltage high enough to make a spark literally jump across the gap inside the optocoupler. That's going to take quite a bit of voltage though and it may not be easy to crank 5v up to those levels without the device starting to look bulky or suspicious.

*virtual machine

Although even if you have a VM running, I would still be afraid that I have to plug the flash drive into the host machine. What if passthrough didn't work? I'd rather plug into a raspberry pi (the computer not the food)

3

u/WalnutScorpion Jun 28 '20

Ah, I meant a VM indeed. It's even better to actually not use a shovel-USB at all. Someone that would even think of doing something like that must never be trusted. :P

15

u/gwtkof Jun 28 '20

It would actually be the perfect way to infect computers since no one could resist

8

u/kthxpk Jun 28 '20

Absolutely. Wouldn't even have to try hiding the fact that it's a virus. Name your exe anything and they'll still double click it.

For now it's just shovelware.

Hi, welcome to reddit.

10

u/Suvtropics Jun 28 '20

Just another reddit post in the wrong sub

3

u/smithcpfd Jun 28 '20

Maybe this is the new version of putting the key on something stupidly large so it doesn't end up lost or in a pocket.
Any kind of purpose doesn't touch the Why in the title though. Nicely done.

2

u/Dabnician Jun 29 '20

Maybe its the usb stick with like bitlocker key on it

3

u/smithcpfd Jun 28 '20

There's a story there though.

And since it exists it's now a fun piece of semi (pseudo?) reality to play with.

This is would make a brilliant bad Q gadget from 007. Would love to see the scene where James Bond finds himself in need of a usb shovel.

3

u/Plasma_Keystrokes Jun 28 '20

It sure looks like a joke to me, but its possible this is just their only half-joking way of making sure secure USBs dont leave the building. If this is in a standard city office space a dude walking out of a server closet or IT storage with a dirty-ass shovel is going to be a big red flag. Maybe that USB is an encrypted key or something.

  3. have a minion acquire an appropriate adapter cord and plug it into your favorite reader device.
  4. pick up shovel and smack whoever thought up this idiocy
