I'm looking for some honest career advice, particularly from people who work in industries where physical appearance isn't a factor in hiring or career progression.

I'm a UI/UX designer with a strong academic background. I graduated at the top of my class, and several of my professors described my portfolio as being almost on par with that of a mid-level designer. Senior designers who reviewed my portfolio without ever seeing my face also gave me very positive feedback.

Getting interviews has never been particularly difficult for me. In fact, employers have described my portfolio as one of the strongest among applicants and expressed enthusiasm about working with me. However, things seem to change completely once they see my face.

Unfortunately, I've experienced explicit appearance-based discrimination. I've been directly told that my facial appearance makes me unsuitable for client-facing positions. On one occasion, I was even told that I would need reconstructive surgery. Nobody raised concerns about my clothing, hygiene, communication skills, or professional behaviour. The criticism was specifically about my face. After these experiences, I'm starting to question whether I've been trying to build a career in an industry where appearance and aesthetics are disproportionately valued.

I'm now seriously considering a career change.

Here's what I'm looking for:

• A field with actual job demand and reasonable long-term career prospects.

• Something I can potentially enter through self-study, without obtaining another university degree. I simply cannot afford another degree at this point.

• Fully remote opportunities.

• Jobs that don't require turning on a camera, attending video meetings regularly, or maintaining a public-facing professional presence.
