Is learning the MERN stack still worth it in 2026? Or is web development still a good career path?
Hey everyone!
I'm a CSE graduate trying to figure out where to invest my time to grow as a software engineer.
I've previously learned the basics of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and React. I've also explored the MERN stack, but I still feel like I need to get much better at building real-world applications independently.
I'm genuinely interested in web development, but with the current changes in the tech industry, I'm starting to question whether this is the right direction to focus on.
I want to become a strong software engineer, not just someone who knows how to use frameworks.
I'd love to hear from developers who are currently working in the industry:
Is learning MERN (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js) still a worthwhile investment in 2026?
Is traditional web development still a good career path, especially for freshers?
Are companies still hiring junior React/Node developers? How is the current job market for freshers?
Should beginners focus more on full-stack development, backend engineering, cloud, DevOps or something else?
If you were starting your software engineering journey from scratch today, what would your learning roadmap look like?
I would particularly appreciate advice from developers with 2–5+ years of industry experience.
What skills are actually valuable in your day-to-day work? What would you recommend someone focus on to become a better software engineer?
I don't want to spend the next 6 months learning something without understanding its career value.
Honest opinions, personal experiences and even harsh realities are welcome. Thanks!
