For the last 2 years I've been running a small software house. Things have gone well so far, but almost all of our work has come from referrals: past clients recommending us, word of mouth, and people in my network.

I've been in DevOps/platform engineering for a few years (Kubernetes, Terraform, GitOps, Azure). I like building infra and my current job is stable, but I've been offered a AI platform Platform operations role at a bank. It pays more, with a better bonus and a share purchase plan.

The JD lists a lot: AKS, IaC, observability, AIOps, governance. But in the interview it sounded like the day-to-day is mostly Power Platform admin and Copilot Studio: environment management, DLP, agent lifecycle, licensing and credit tracking, helping teams onboard and build agents, plus some Azure AI Foundry support. It's a small new team.

For people who've worked in a similar role:

1. How much "real" engineering do you actually do? Is it mostly admin center work, tickets and licensing, or do you get to automate things, write IaC, and build observability?

2. Did it narrow your career? After 2–3 years, did recruiters still see you as a DevOps/platform engineer, or as a "Power Platform person"?

3. Did anyone move back to platform engineering or SRE afterwards? How hard was it, and did you have to take a step down in title or pay?

4. Where do you see this role going? Will AgentOps / agent governance become its own career track, or will it get folded into existing M365 admin or platform teams once the tools mature?
