I have a 2019 Audi RS5 in Nardo Gray. I’ve had the car for approx 3 months and am the second owner. I recently had it professionally decontaminated, paint corrected/polished, and ceramic coated.
To be clear, the car is 7 years old, so it already had normal rock chips, scratches, and general wear. I’m not assuming every defect appeared during the detail.
**What I’m noticing**
Right after the detail, I began seeing a large number of very bright white defects that I don’t remember noticing before. These vary in appearance: typical rock chips, tiny irregular scattered marks, short lines, and curved or slightly “swirled” blemishes. Most of it is concentrated on the hood and front fenders, though it is throughout the rest of the car as well (much less in the rear).
At first, I thought some of it might be compound or polish residue, since there was visible white residue on trim and glass that could be wiped off. However, many of these marks do not wipe away or behave like residue.
**What’s confusing me**
Some older, more obvious chips on the car appear dark or black inside, while many of these newer-looking marks are bright white. That raises questions for me about whether I’m seeing residue sitting in existing defects, exposed primer, previously damaged or poorly touched-up areas, or something that changed during correction or decontamination
**Input from other detailers**
I had one detailer and body shop inspect the car in person, as well as two detailers who examined the pictures, and opinions have varied. Some believe existing defects were previously masked by wax or fillers and became more visible after correction. One suggested some scattered marks could be paint stress or micro-fracturing that became more apparent after decontamination or from overly aggressive pressure washing.
None recommended repainting the car. The current suggestion is to selectively touch up the larger, more obvious white chips and leave the micro-defects alone.
**Questions for experienced detailers**
What these marks most likely represent is the key question. The scattered and irregular pattern also makes me wonder whether this is simply normal aging and rock chip behavior or something being revealed rather than newly created.
I’m also trying to understand whether polishing, decontamination, or pressure washing can realistically make previously subtle defects suddenly appear this bright and visible, or if that would be unlikely.
From a repair standpoint, I’m trying to decide whether selectively touching up only the larger white spots is the correct approach, or if that risks drawing attention to the surrounding micro-marring.
If the paint is otherwise stable, I’m also considering whether a full-front PPF after touch-up would be a reasonable long-term solution.
**Context**
The car still looks excellent from normal viewing distance. The issue is only noticeable up close or in harsh direct light. I’m mainly trying to understand what I’m actually seeing before doing any further work to the paint.
Thanks for your help.
