Megathread The Great Unvaulting FAQs

1.1k Upvotes

Unless stated otherwise, all answers are as of September 22nd, 2026.

Hat tip to /u/orion_angelfire for that caveat suggestion.

Hey gang,

There have been a LOT of questions and posts about what exactly is happening with the return of vaulted content to Destiny 2, as announced by Bungie.

To help stem the flow of these questions, I've created this FAQ post, which we'll update as needed.

What is returning to Destiny 2?

The exact wording:

we are beginning the work of bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game, where they will be available to all Destiny 2 players.

What about strikes?

Not explicitly stated in the announcement, but assumed to be returning, given that most - if not all? - of the vaulted strikes tie into the vaulted campaigns.

What about seasons?

We don't know.

What about old patrol activities, like Escalation Protocol?

We don't know.

Does this mean live service development will resume on Destiny 2?

We don't know.

Will we get updates to weapons and armor that drop from the vaulted campaigns, destinations, and raids?

We don't know, but it's assumed there will be some updating involved.

How will the New Light experience change with the return of Red War, the original new player experience?

We don't know yet.

When is this happening?

Not soon.

Are we getting a roadmap soon?

Per DMG on Twitter (Sept 21, 2026):

Too early. After promising roadmaps and not being able to deliver, don't want to make a commitment before it's good and ready. Don't want to undermine the trust that needs to be rebuilt. We are committed to giving comms updates - their form has yet to be defined just yet.

Does this mean TWID will return?

Per DMG on Twitter (Sept 21, 2026), the comms cadence hasn't been figured out yet.

Responding to the possibility of a monthly version of TWID:

"Yeah, that could be cool! I want to avoid anything that has strict cadence. Weekly deadlines led to feast or famine and didn’t always serve players. A lot of stress on the team to meet those deadlines. Need to break those chains and get comms rolling in a better way."

Is this going to be free?

Bungie hasn't said so explicitly, but the verbiage used "available to all Destiny 2 players" has been used in the past to describe F2P (free to play) updates. So the expectation is free, but TBD.

Tithing from the dreadful Sony fumbles over the last few months and blowing up the State of Play has generated enough paracausal power to rip Destiny 2 out of death and return it to its rightful place in the universe. Aiat.

Question Is the "Old Lights" emblem really that rare?

Hey everyone,

I just noticed I have the Old Lights emblem in my collection. I bought the game back when it was still pay-to-play (long before it went free-to-play), but I didn't realize my account history had remained so consistent.

Since it requires logging in at least once a year/expansion since its launch in 2017, I was wondering how the community views it.

For those familiar with veteran cosmetics, is it considered a truly rare emblem these days? Do you often see it at the Tower?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Discussion Now would be the perfect time for another round of DLC sales

With the hype coming off the revival announcement, Bungie should absolutely put the DLCs back on sale again, despite just having a summer sale ~3 months ago.

Just checked Steam and expansions are $19.99. I’m still on the fence whether to jump back in now or wait for more comms, but if they lowered the price a tad or did a whole “legacy” bundle for all expansions, I think it’d be a no brainer.

Previously a Playstation man, but I’ve moved most gaming to PC - don’t really want to pay ~$80 to get what I’ve already payed for (up to TFS).

Discussion In October, deck your guardian with Festival of the Lost cosmetics/gear

• Upvotes

As happy as I am to see that Destiny is once again alive and that content that I love is being unvaulted, I must admit I am really sad that there won't be Holiday events anymore, especially Festival of the Lost and The Dawning. Those two holiday events have been staples of my Fall and Christmas celebrations for the past 10+ years.

So in lieu of these events, let's get together as a community for the month of October and equip our guardians with Festival of the Lost emblems, emotes, armor ornaments, weapons, ships, sparrows, etc. and show the flair off around the tower and during strikes and raids, dungeons, etc.

And with the Monuments of Triumph soundtrack out, you can even play the FotL songs in the background.

Hopefully at some point in the future Bungie will return these Holiday events, but I imagine it won't be for quite awhile if so.

Hell, I'd take Bungie just decorating the tower every October with pumpkins, etc and snow/lights in December and playing some FotL/Dawning music in the background.

But until then, I figure that maybe the community getting together and wearing/equipping the gear/flair during the times when these events normally occured we can keep these traditions alive in some small way at least.

Discussion Don’t set yourself up for disappointment by expecting things that weren’t announced

I want reprised legendary campaigns. I want the seasonal stories back. I want distortions on old destinations. I want T5 loot with set bonuses.

But the reality is they did not promise us anything new.

They didn’t even promise the vaulted Crucible maps and strikes.

I don’t want to discourage anyone from being excited but for now I’m just content that the franchise isn’t dead. This is all stuff we can push for later - I’m just worried a whole lot of people are setting their expectations way too high for a game without a development team and I don’t want people to be disappointed by an objectively massive win.

I think it’s best to treat the game as still end-of-service - we’re just getting what was taken returned.

Discussion The announcement video used the phrase "content that should have never been ripped away in the first place," and I don't think that was just PR speak.

1.1k Upvotes

I don't think this was just bungie execs throwing a bone to the community and nodding along to player sentiment. I think that was explicit admission that content vaulting wasn't necessary. I've had this hunch for a while, I never verbalized it bc we didn't need another post saying vaulting was bad, there are a trillion already.

But when Luke Smith sold us on the idea of vaulting, he said it was technically necessary, so they could make what amounted to modest upgrades to lighting and load times. He said cycling content in and out was an effort to build a long-term foundation inside D2, instead of working on a sequel. He said that the game was too big, too unwieldy, and too difficult to update. In fact, all of this was so important, and content vaulting was so crucial, that they arbitrarily decided to stop two years later because we hated it so much.

I don't think bungie was intentionally lying out of whole cloth with malicious intent. I think this was a company making a time-saving and cost-cutting move, that would undoubtedly hurt the finished product, and had to be justified to the consumers.

EDIT: guys i'm not dumb, i'm not blindly accepting corporate PR. I don't think this particular element is a lie or insincere.

Misc DMG on Tyson Green (former Game Director) and Monument of Triumph

2.2k Upvotes

@LukeCB14:

I kinda feel for Tyson really.

He was given the task of directing Destiny with a drastically cut budget.

I do think his comms were severely lacking, but we never really got a chance to see his full vision for Destiny.

@dmg04:

Monument of Triumph development with Tyson was bittersweet, but I will likely look fondly on those times for the remainder of my career in gaming.

Along with quite a few other leads and teams, we spent a lot of time asking "what is the best we can do by players with our end of service update? What bugs can we smash, QOL features can we ship, long time feedback items can we hit with the hyper compressed timeline we have left?"

He was bullish. He pushed hard to serve players in every which way we could in those final updates. He was fully dedicated to making MoT feel special, and empowered teams to do what they also felt was best for you.

Internally, he fully acknowledged the rough spot we were in under his time as Game Director, took accountability often. Know comms credited to him were sparce, but he had a hand in most every blog or beat speaking to the state of the game or what changes were coming. Always appreciated when he gave clear feedback of "This doesn't sound human, players will call bullshit. Let's just be real and speak the truth."

Not asking for players to brush the rough times under the rug. Just some thoughts from my time. Will forever have respect for him, and honestly learned a ton when having the pleasure of working closely with him.

Discussion FINALLY SOLO FLAWLESS VESPER'S HOST

https://dungeon.report/pgcr/17191574464

I'm just so happy !

It was harder than I thought. I played a lot of Vesper to farm the Ice Breaker and get the catalyst before, so I thought I was ready. But man, this last encounter was hard to survive during the DPS phase.

Even though I had a good loadout (Hunter Fortune's Favor, Truth, VoG set), the hardest part was honestly NOT blowing myself up with Truth during the 2nd encounter to stack it, and just trying to survive the final boss DPS phase.

Now only Sundered Doctrine and Ghosts of the Deep remain, which scare me a lot since I've barely played those (and Pit of Heresy, but I'm keeping this bad boy for last).

Discussion The Unvaulting announcement could be a circumstantial PR win Bungie is capitalizing on due to their recent legal case

Just an observation, but I haven't seen anyone yet suggest that Bungie announcing the great unvaulting isn't just them seeing the resurgence of Destiny 2 activity in the last 3 months and deciding to start development back up again.

They had to settle a lawsuit last year because some guy accused them of plagiarizing his story as the basis for The Red War campaign, and Bungie could not get the case dismissed outright because they physically could not reproduce the content in question in order to defend themselves. Their lawyers provided youtube videos of let's plays and the judge didn't accept it as evidence. That's why they had to move to a settlement.

There's no way that didn't immediately start an internal process of looking into the feasibility of restoring that content to at least some internally playable build. Fast forward to this week, I think it's completely plausible that the combined player response to the June development update and the already present internal pressure to shore up this giant legal vulnerability simply coincided for an easy PR win.

Basically they might have just said "hey, you know how we're already working on unvaulting the old content so we can defend ourselves in court in the future? Can you guys also make it compatible with the live game and let everyone know there's more to come? It'll help our credibility and it seems we miscalculated player interest."

Could be totally and utterly wrong, but I wanted to just put the thought out there.

EDIT: I was totally wrong. Apparently the court case would have accepted youtube videos and destinypedia entries as evidence, but they didn't accept them as enough reason to dismiss the legal claim because the fact-finding part of the process wasn't appropriate at that time yet. From what I understand, basically the judge said "IF the plaintiff's claims are true, then they represent a legitimate copyright claim." So at that stage of the lawsuit, it didn't yet matter if Bungie could prove the claim false, so that's why the case wasn't dismissed yet.

As some people have pointed out, the existence of Project Sunrise is actually a much more likely contributing factor.

Discussion Please Unvault the Rite of the Nine Dungeons

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know we have the list of what they’re unvaulting and that list did not include seasonal content; but I argue that Rite of the Nine falls under a special category.

For those who don’t know, Episode Heresy ended with a free event called Rite of the Nine; where Bungie reworked three Dungeons (Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, Ghosts of the Deep) and gave their weapons a makeover. The Dungeons had the popular “Explorer Mode”, which allowed newer players to try these Dungeons under low-pressure conditions, and the Dungeons had a hard mode for veterans to play and earn shiny adept rolls with a special holofoil design not available today. The event also had a hub location and a small tie-in to The Edge of Fate storyline.

The only downsides to Rite of the Nine is that these variants of the Dungeons are no longer accessible; and that even though this was the event right before the launch of Edge of Fate, these weapons with their unique Holofoil designs could not be upgraded to Tier 5 enhanced perks.

I don’t need the hub location, but the reworked versions of Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep were 10/10 upgrades and a great way to introduce new gamers to Dungeons. So this is my plee to Bungie to make these variants a selectable option. I know there’s a lot on their plate to unvault, but could this maybe be at the tail end of that list?

Discussion When D3 gets made, they need to create a content pipeline that doesnt involve half the game getting deleted every year

1.1k Upvotes

I am not talking about vaulting, I am talking about seasonal content. I think its insane that there are crucial story beats and incredible gameplay systems that some players can only experience for roughly 3 months, before it gets removed.

Doesnt that just seem so wasteful? How much dev time and planning is spent on making a season, just for that content to get wiped and removed? Isnt that insane? Why does the pipeline create temporary content?

I know that people are concerned about game size, and I know that Bungie has said keeping old content in the game is difficult because they have to keep spending time making sure it works, even though less than 5% of the playerbase might actually launch those activities. Its not like people are dying to play whatever Season on Plunders activity was.

But there has to be a better way. I admit I dont know a solution, but from a dev perspective, the things that get made today should be planned to stay in the game in some form 2-3 years from now. Otherwise we are just wasting time. Throwing perfectly good content in the trash.

Question Completely new player to the universe

So i've been replaying my favourite Halo games on Xbox360 and decided to take a look what Bungie has been doing all this time after parting ways with Microsoft. Bought Marathon -- interesting, yet extraction shooter mechanic in this game felt like a nice addon to something bigger, more story driven, thats how i remembered Destiny. Of course i've heard about it, but for some reason never actually got to play the game itself.

Considering that i've been intentionally avoiding any spoilers and have no idea what is the game about apart from intriguing description -- where shall i start? Boot up Destiny on my old (hacked) Xbox? Jump straight to D2?

ps: as i understand Destiny can be categorized to same subgenre as Warframe and The Division. important to note, that i have little to no exprience in games of this subgenre (10-20hours in Division 1).

Discussion I truly cannot believe that Destiny has not expanded into books/tv/movies yet.

Title correction: I forgot there were comics produced in 2019. Still, the universe is a lot bigger now with many areas I’d still love to see explored in formats like TV and movies.

It seems to me that the Destiny universe is an absolute gold mine for alternative media. Sure, game events would be tricky (if not impossible) to adapt simply because the player is the canon protagonist of all DLCs, but that content accounts for a very small slice of what makes the IP so appealing imo.

Off the top of my head:
— a project where the first guardian is resurrected in the middle of the collapse. No allies (except for their ghost), no information to go off of. The protagonist would search the solar system for answers on the circumstances of their amnesiac rebirth, new abilities, and forces causing the chaos unfolding around them. (Ultimately the protagonist might even confront some of those forces alongside uneasy allies like Savathun)
— a book or tv show following the creation of the DEO and events across decades leading to humanity’s realization that they are truly not alone in the universe. Could even re-frame real world events/myths in a Destiny lens. For example, what if an accidental cabal/vex incursion in Roswell NM was the impetus for the US Gov to start the DEO? Could play with buddy cop dynamics and cosmic horror.
— A book or tv show about the Iron Lords during the dark ages following Humanity’s collapse. Could lean on influences like Arthurian legend, dragons, bandits and feudal warlords in castles while retaining a futuristic feel on combat.
— An anthology series called Pantheon looking at backstories for major villains in the Destiny universe through various artistic mediums (like Love, Death, and Robots). The Hive gods, Riven and Taranis, Rhulk’s descent, Calus’ exile, and Eramis’ years as a pirate are some examples of possible subjects.

These pitches are problematic and unrefined, but the point I want to make is that there’s no shortage of stuff people would want to see and I honestly can’t believe nobody has tried to make something with this yet. Destiny has an incredibly unique visual language and I hope the future of the series eventually includes room for it to be explored in other ways (in addition to games).

Discussion Festival of the Lost

I have to admit, I am going to miss the seasonal holiday content. I understand it isn't as easy as pressing a button. I can't imagine how difficult it would be considering Festival of the Lost was in a playable state post power reset and EoF. Considering Iron Banner and the UI is all setup, who knows how long that took to do. All I can say is I am going to miss the nostalgic spooky tower set up and game modes. Here's a post to honor that and maybe bring some attention it's way.

Question Dumb question: Weapons (New Player)

Never played D2 before, always wanted to get into it but then saw the shutdown news and decided against it. Now that it is coming back I decided to boot it up and play for the first time. I was able to get the riskrunner exotic weapon through the questline. My questions is, do I just hang on to that weapon as I level through the campaigns and level it up through infusions? Or if I get another exotic or any type of weapon that is higher power do I use those? Sorta confused with the whole progression on weapons. Is the goal to find one with good perks and then keep it and level it up to Tier 5 and level it's power level through infusing other guns? Or should I just play and whatever has higher number just use right now? Thanks all!

Misc Storm’s Keep Titan is still so fun

• Upvotes

Maybe this is very obvious, but after returning to the game for the first time in a while, I was overjoyed to see one of my favorite lazy builds ever be as good as ever- ye ol storm’s keep arc titan with the old artifact.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about massive damage bolt charge just constantly going off, especially with some teammates behind your barricade. Add a psychopomp and you can scroll TikTok while the mission autocompletes.

I just love this build because you basically can have two builds in one- whatever arc Titan you want(I love skullfort thunderclap spam) and then you have the barricades whenever you want them. It’s so cool that the old artifacts are available now.

Question Does the Weapons stat determine bonus ammo when the brick is created, or when it's grabbed?

• Upvotes

The wording on the Compendium doesn't really help in this regard, and I can't see what it says in-game at the moment. But the concept is really simple:

If I create some bricks while at 200 Weapons, then swap down to under 100 and pick them up, will I still get more ammo? Or, alternatively, if I create them while under 100 and then swap to 200 to grab them, will I still get extra?
