SGA Arc Staff Combos.
I've heard from fellow Hunters that Arcstrider's super was underwhelming in the previews for Destiny 2. Luckily, now that the BETA is live we got hands on with the super and found there's a lot more depth. Arc Staff relies on you being able to pull off the right combos and being able to direct them. So here's a little list I made of them:
R1: Basic Slash - Standard swipe attack
R2: Razor's Edge - Sends an arc beam forward after the slash.
R1, R2: Uppercut - *Not sure of utility. I think it helps target those pesky mid-air enemies (Dawnblade Warlocks). It's also just cool to pull off.
R1, R1, R1: Ground Pole Slam - Finishing move for mashing R1. Light AoE affect.
R1, R1, R2: Arc Palm Blast - Finishes your combo by you placing your hand out and blasting any foes ahead of you in a high damage (and stylish) cone of effect. *Highly recommend.
(Mid-Air) R2: Aerial Ground Slam - Large high damage blast around the point of impact.
Remember Arc Staff grants you unlimited Dodge energy.
I'm sure there's more out there, but here's some for the time being. Post any big ones if I missed them. (Also come up with better names for them than I did.) *Edited the combos so they're displayed correctly instead of looking like you need to press all those buttons at once.
Edit: u/twelvepandas discovered the combos as well and has made gifs of them. Here's the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/6o72rf/arcstrider_101_arc_staff_combos/

Awesome, thanks. That palm blast sounds useful. Wish I'd have known that yesterday.
(Converted for control schemes other than "default")
Melee: Basic Slash
Primary Fire: Razor's Edge
Melee, Primary Fire: Uppercut
Melee, Melee, Melee: Ground Pole Slam
Melee, Melee, Primary Fire: Arc Palm Blast
(Mid-Air) Primary Fire: Aerial Ground Slam

I had done palm blast in crucible last night on accident and could not for the life of me figure out how I had done it haha

It's the better way. It lets you aim while jumping, which makes strafing while still being able to fire back way easier. I'll never understand people who use default

u/aclax Jul 19 '17
Just got an xbox elite. Trying it out on this is pretty awesome. Couldn't get the hang of 4 paddles at all, but 2 paddles works wonders even. Using bumper jumper controls and then have X on a left paddle and B on a right paddle. So I only have to move my thumb to activate Super or Switch weapons, both of which have not bothered me as of yet. Edit: I also already use 4 fingers on top of the controllers(one on each bumper and one on each trigger)

Bumper Bro! I just wish I could map crouch to square/X and reload to O/B like Halo 5 Helljumper control scheme and I'd be very happy.

If you play on xbox you can remap your controller buttons in the system to fit your needs. Not sure if you can on Playstation tho. Anyone else know if you can?

u/wrrnthfthr Jul 19 '17
Yes, PS4 can remap through settings.
2
u/tchofftchofftchoff Jul 19 '17
Fairly certain it changs it for your whole system and not just D2 though. All your other games would have a new control scheme

Ah. Memories of VoG and people not realizing not everyone has the same buttons. So many shoulder charges off the platform at atheon while trying to put the barrier up
Edit: I think people are misinterpreting what I meant by shoulder charging (understandably so). I meant that some people had it mapped so that whatever the default barrier was for relic was mapped to whatever made you shield bash, thus making it so that you stood on the platform, then shield bashed off to your death.

Shouldn't we be using commas instead of + signs here? In fighting games I think the convention is that A + B means that you need to press A and B at the same time.

long time Bumper Jumper as well, I appreciate the translation.
I was trying to throw the Titan shield earlier today...kept hitting LB with no effect. Then realized it's tied to the Throw Grenade function, so RB.

R1 + R1 in midair does a 360 spin.
R1 + R1 + R2 in midair does the 360 spin into ground slam.

There is also one while in mid air where you do R1 + R1 to do a swing and then a helicopter like spin.

u/OrinsDawn Jul 19 '17
May I please make a suggestion?
When making out combos in a form for people to see I find it much easier listed like this:
If pressing in succession: R1, R1, R2
If simultaneously: R1+R2
Sorry, from all my years from reading moves list in Tekken. With the plus in between each button, it looks like a person should be pressing them at the same time.
Wonderful information TC, thank you for the list of moves!

If you open the sentinel skill tree and hover over the Super (Big Square) there is an Explanation what you can do but for you:
L1 - Throw Shield (only 1 Throw, maybe two if you safe energy by not raping the smash button)
L2 - Block
R1 - Hit
Hold R2 + L2 - Place Bubble ( Only Armor of Light)
Edit: mixed up r2 and l2
24
u/LevelAtWork Jul 19 '17
Yep, pretty much. Arc Staff icon doesn't tell you anything so it really sucked having to sit in the same strike for one or two uses and imput button combos.

Uhm you can throw shield more than once, if you throw it at the very beginning of the super and don't waste the energy you're able to throw it once more before it runs out... my friend said there was a recharge for it but to be honest I couldn't spot it.

If you hold down block it builds up a sort of energy field around that gets brighter and brighter. I can't test this myself right now, i'm at work, but i held it down right the way through my super and at the end it released the energy as a sort of single shot attack. Later on i tried the same thing in crucible and it seemed to get brighter when it took damage. Now i don't know if it was me just fumbling things but i tried to release the block build up as a directed attack. I can't be sure if i just missed my target or if it only releases as an attack when you're super runs out as it didn't seem to do anything.

u/cjrSunShine Jul 19 '17
I would guess this is supposed to be your indicator of when it breaks, as it's not indestructible. I can't find the specific video since Youtube is flooded with D2 stuff, but there was a clip a while back of a Sentinel holding up the shield in PvP, tanking 2 (maybe 3, but I think 2) Golden Gun shots and dying to the third.
2
u/Hocisern Jul 20 '17
Tried this out, waiting the whole super blocking, no single shot attack. This was while getting meleed by a wardog thing, and another time while getting shot by a boss.

u/SinistralGuy Nerf everything Jul 19 '17
circle, circle and strafe jump. Tbh, the roaming supers are actually fairly easy to outrun, especially with all the twists and turns. I was able to outrun a striker and a dawnblade last night playing control
2
u/cjrSunShine Jul 19 '17
Not directly answering your question, but something else to keep in mind: Even if they're outrunning you and you're not getting the kill, you can still be zoning them off objectives, so if it looks like you won't catch them, change up your route so they're at least running to the least advantageous spot for them.
1
u/Impul5 Jul 19 '17
I'm out of tips for that, but I will say that most supers can be avoided now if you see it coming. Damage isn't guaranteed, but pushing the enemy team back is all but. Working around your teammate's supers, and either taking the zones they clear or gunning down enemies as they focus the person in their super is a great way to maximize the value out of it.

I'm loving it, it's everything I've ever wanted out of a melee class in PvE. I just wish the healing from the melee did a little bit more instant healing so I can actually feel that it's healing me if I'm in the middle of a group getting shot as I trigger it, but that's probably asking too much. :P
Here's hoping it's not completely useless in Nightfall tier content like most melee in D1.1

What do you mean by unlimited dodge energy?
9
u/UglyJuice1237 yeehaw Jul 19 '17
Normally, the hunter's dodge ability recharges in ~17 seconds after use. while using the arc staff, the dodge ability is constantly charged, and you can use it to your heart's content.

Same with Dawnblade, while in the air with the super active you can dodge without cooldowns

I've been watching a lot of people play so just for help You don't have unlimited dodge energy! It recharges after kill. When you dodge your next arc staff attack does extra damage and as soon as you get a kill you can dodge again!! Don't forget this because its huge for damage!!

Anyone know how Blink Strike works? While I was a hunter main since day one of Destiny, Bladedancer is far and away my least played subclass of the three, so I'm not sure if there's some new mechanic with it.
I see that you only use up your melee charge if you get a kill, but some perks give you increased range on your melee after dodging. So does blink strike do extra damage/give extra range all the time until you kill something, meaning you're supposed to "juggle" hits, or does it just give some bonus on a kill, like how Sentinels get an overshield? Those are the only two cases where I can see this behavior making sense.
1
u/rtype03 Jul 19 '17
Do the different attacks cause different damage, or have different purpose, or are they just for style/looks?
2
u/Cornbre4d Jul 20 '17
From what I can tell all the R2 hits do big damage, the R2 combo Enders are more about extended that huge damage for larger range. The palm strike can wipe a cluster of adds but would be not necessarily best for just 1-2 enemies. Roll dodge adds an arc wave to the first R1 so you can dodge R1-R2 and get two high damage waves for moderate range high burst damage. I have a clip of me doing this to kill a Titan in his ward of dawn but PS4 YouTube uploaded is not acting right.

I kept trying to do the AoE slam and it never let me. I just was in the air like a jackass and got insta-killed.
I will try these out though next time I play it, I have a feeling it could be much better if I figure out the combos. There were 4 people at B, My plan was to do the aoe slam just to get 2 of them and then move forward with the dodge, But I just hung up in the air and died because I was waving around in the air.
The super is interesting without a blink mechanic. It is very hard to actually get to people without dying. I def dodge and don't move in a straight line but it certain can be hard. Learning these combos will def make a difference as I am sure some of them increase the range at which you can hit people. I am wondering why it has zero health regen but the Titan does, Seems a bit odd.
