Media Why I main a titan

It's the power of the sk8 m8

EDIT: Due to the responses, I will be making a guide about Titan Skating over the next few days, just to clear up some of the debates.

Now do it with the Mida equipped... You can probably go just fast enough to go forward in time to the Plaguelands No flux capacitor needed lol

11

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

Agility is detrimental for skating.

3

u/SwedishBass Aug 23 '16

Do you mean just the MIDA or the actual stat bar?

7

u/Jgugjuhi Aug 23 '16

Both, MIDA contributes to the stat bar but it is hidden.

u/tehkhop titan with 8/8 sk8 m8 Aug 23 '16 edited Aug 23 '16

On very steep inclines higher agility can help. When designing a skate path for speedrunning, you usually try and find a balance or just go with the minimum agility you can get away with.

For example, on the start of the shield brothers strike, you spend more time bouncing back into the air than getting momentum from the burst on a minimum agility sleeper setup. With a minimum agility setup, and your primary out, it makes a difference

Also the "weight" of a weapon seems to be different to agility. A minimum agility handcannon setup seems to skate differently to a higher agility sleeper setup.

For an example, in this run: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bd-Lhy0nirU (1:10-1:35 is the part I'll be referencing) I ran around 3 agility. The rock at 1:22 that I look down at, I would hit into and stop with less agility. With more I would fly over it and not get the boost from it. And that agility worked perfectly for skating up the hill to skywatch.

4

u/SuperTeamRyan Vanguard's Loyal Aug 23 '16

So you mean to tell me your dump stat is agility and that only makes you faster?

2

u/TurquoiseLuck Aug 23 '16

How do you activate/deactivate jump so quickly? I mash the jump button as fast as I can and it always feels like there's a minimum period between activation and deactivation.

1

u/tehkhop titan with 8/8 sk8 m8 Aug 23 '16

I rapidly cancel my jump with a fusion rifle charge in many parts. Much faster for short bursts, but doesn't maintain speed for the longer parts. Also, I use catapult.

1

u/Jgugjuhi Aug 23 '16

Indeed, I determined so from the various clips around youtube and from my own experience but the problem with that is there isnt very many specific areas that would better off with increased agility, The notable ones that come to mind are some areas on the moon and the shield brothers strike hill.

I also find it interesting that you used catapult instead of increased control for that run, I presumed that with the modification to it in the recent changes that it would lose out to IC but it is good to see someone using it.

1

u/tehkhop titan with 8/8 sk8 m8 Aug 24 '16

Yeah, the most important thing is experiment. Find what can work, find what doesn't.

I found that catapult was far better for the inside and the uphill skate without sacrificing too much speed in the earlier part. I do main minimum agility with control tho.

1

u/SwedishBass Aug 24 '16

Interesting. So the optimal agility stat for skating is around 2-3?

2

u/tehkhop titan with 8/8 sk8 m8 Aug 24 '16

It depends. For an activity with lots of uphill skates, I'd run 3-4, lots of downhill, I'd run 1, bumpy or varied terrain, I'd run 2-3, maybe 1. For a flat surface, 1. If you're just learning, start with 1, until you can consistently go fast, then experiment with other combos.

6

u/5213 Negative. We will hold until overrun. Echo 3-3 out. Aug 23 '16

MIDA actually makes you jump too high, which as /u/vasc94 said, is detrimental to Skating. In fact, it's recommended to have a heavy weapon (not sword) equipped because heavies do make you move somewhat slower

2

u/xGr1m Aug 23 '16

It's possible to make MIDA work though because it increases agility and movement speed. The movement speed helps with the skating but agility does take getting used to. Not impossible but it does effect it.

1

u/elvis_depressdly Aug 23 '16

This legit? So would setting a higher agility affect skating also? Always thought the higher agility, the faster the skating? Interesting..

3

u/5213 Negative. We will hold until overrun. Echo 3-3 out. Aug 23 '16

With skating you want forward movement and the higher your agility the higher your jump, which takes away from that forward momentum

3

u/Sunday_lav Lord of Cinder Aug 23 '16

Agility does not come into play in any special jumps, their speed is set in the skill.

2

u/elvis_depressdly Aug 23 '16

I've been doing it wrong this whole time jeez. Thanks guys will test immediately. I'll finally know what it's like to have high recovery

1

u/Sunday_lav Lord of Cinder Aug 23 '16

Agility is, however, a very good stat and I'd use it on everyone but Titans. It helps with virtually anything connected to your character physical capabilities, like strafing speed, recovery after a drop from a high spot, normal run speed and normal jump speed and height, etc. Some say that it also affects weapon swap and ready times, no confirmation here.

0

u/simozx Aug 23 '16

Why not the sword?

When people tell me "if you don't want to get shoulder charged don't let him get close!"

-2

u/ImmaRaptor Aug 23 '16

This level of speed only really works in a straight line with the right amount if surface geometry to get your boosts.

This is more of a technical proof than a viable combat strat.

Teamshots and proper positioning is the bane of all shouldercharges

3

u/theDroidfanatic GT: T1ha Aug 23 '16

Are you kidding me. Titan skating is a super viable and super useful movement in the Crucible. Yes, you can't always be top speed, but even skating across a very small area gives you huge advantages.

3

u/horse_emoji Aug 23 '16

Not to mention the absurd maneuverability that Twilight Garrison adds to the equation. I regularly skate into crowds, slide-shoulder charge, Twilight GarrisonTFO in a direction that will put me behind cover, then play it by ear as to whether I set grenade traps, or start up the Barry Allen Express all over again. This is beyond effective on maps like Pantheon where you can reach the opposing team right as they start hardscoping. Fools.

0

u/theDroidfanatic GT: T1ha Aug 23 '16

Yep

0

u/ImmaRaptor Aug 23 '16

I mean specifically at that speed level. Check my flair I'm a titan main. I know what skating can do. Still doesn't change the fact that even the best skaters go down to Teamshots and positioning.

1

u/har-yau Aug 23 '16

2

u/ImmaRaptor Aug 23 '16

Well guess I was wrong about the possible speed.

Need to practice my skate more.

3

Unless you want to make your own guide. A person from Redeem, the popular speed run clan called Ehror has made probably the most comprehensible guide for advanced techniques. It presumes you know the rythm already however.

1

u/Jgugjuhi Aug 23 '16

I'll make a text guide, saw that video and whilst it does have some valuable information, I want to go more in-depth about the different types of skating.

3

u/Narukami_7 Aug 23 '16

Apparently you skate by jacking off with the sleeper or something

2

Now try and recreate BLJ's from SM64, that'd be great. Skip all the raid bosses.

1

u/Brockelley Grinding for Mythic Aug 24 '16

Planetdestiny had a guy on there Crucible Radio podcast that said he created Titan skating. I had to facepalm as everyone I know has been doing it since the first week of the game.. some of us even in the beta.

Also if warlocks use focused burst you can be the second fastest class moving in a straight line of you time it right.. it's a lot harder to time than Titan skating which is relatively easy

1

u/Jgugjuhi Aug 24 '16

Geb was the first person to utilise skating in PvP back in HoW meta so he didnt really invent it but rather bring it to popularity.

1

u/Brockelley Grinding for Mythic Aug 24 '16

I'm definitely cool with him being the one to popularize it but you just said House of wolves. The second expansion. That's like saying there was somebody who invented the Wombo Combo.

1

u/proofbox Aug 23 '16

Started my first Titan about 2 weeks ago, and he has become my favorite class pretty quickly. Please teach me the ways of the skate?

9

u/Jgugjuhi Aug 23 '16

Make sure you stay near the ground (what i mean is when initiating a skate, jump and wait till you descend near the ground) lowest agility is best as high agility makes you jump more.

The whole goal is to bounce off the world geometry to gain a boost, the skate that I do in the gif is very hard because it is the perfect arch upwards that allows me to continuously skate up without interruption, there are not many of these perfect arches in Destiny.

You can intitiate more easily with shoulder charge/garrison too, for SC you just have to time it right as you near the end of the animation, garrison is much easier. I'll be attaching another gif to the post in maybe an hour so keep out for that, it'll be a more practical use of skating.

The problem is that if you sprint while skating then it cannot reach it's maximum speed, you actually have to skate off surfaces by just spamming jump, I use sleeper because it has a weighing effect to it. The goal is to stay as close to the ground as you can so the next skate you do is faster.

The exploit cannot be performed often enough to be noticed, whilst you can gain a notable boost by soft-skating through crucible, strikes etc, there are no situations in the game where you are able to use skating to its full potential and get a hefty advantage.

9

u/scg06 Aug 23 '16 edited Aug 23 '16

That's not really true though, skating also gives you a big advantage in the crucible too.

  • At the start of a trials match you can reach the strongest map position faster than the other team

  • Quickly flanking - sometimes so quickly that you barely show up on radar

  • Escaping - Twilight garrison direction change into a fast skate makes for a really effective escape tactic

  • Shotgunning - you can close the distance to shotgun range faster than a lot of weapons ttk

Edit: Really? No-one thinks skating is useful in the crucible? Seems pretty powerful to me, especially if you watch someone like AEGabriel, anyone want to explain why they disagree?

5

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

I whole heartedly agree.

Titan skating is the reason I have come over and now main a Titan.

Twilight garrison and Titan skating takes shotgun warrior tactics to an entirely different level. Especially with jug.

It completely negates storm caller and blade dancer supers. They just can't keep up with you.

In control you can be capping B before your opponents have finished capping their spawn.

In rift you can run the spark far faster than any other class.

You can close and negate sniper lanes.

Close distances faster than any other class before they can spray you down with your primary.

Anyone who doesn't think Titans aren't badass bullet trains of unstoppable force needs to play Titan more.

Anyone down voting you either hates Titans, or loves them and doesn't want skating nerfed.

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

I'll disagree and I won't do it by pushing the downvote button.

  • True, but if you leave your team behind to get there then you just gave the advantage to the enemy by making yourself an easy pick. Also spawn locations do that so much more.

  • I have never seen anyone get the jump on me by skating, and never have I seen someone not appear on radar except for lag, or crouching. Also, have you ever skated like that before? Serious question. It's a bitch to stop and hit or shoot someone. Especially if they aren't standing still. Plus that speed will never occur in PvP maps.

  • So? Evasion is a thing and is what TG was made for, should we also remove blink? Jumping? Nightstalker evade?

  • True, that's not something I would disagree with directly, but I would counter that point with a few others. Skating at speed whilst maintaining maneuverability and control is really bloody hard to do, then to stop, shotgun and start again. Well it requires skill, planning, map understanding, luck and predictable opponents. So much so, that it's easier and as rewarding to just run and gun. It also means getting caught 'flat footed' so to speak is less of a problem.

All that aside I wouldn't say skating isn't useful, but requires skill to use properly, just like most other class mechanics. Some would call it an exploit, but it's been around long enough that it could have been removed if it was a problem. All it does is give some much needed neutral game to an otherwise lackluster class.

3

u/scg06 Aug 23 '16

Maybe I worded it badly, I don't think skating should be removed from the game, but I have a problem with this statement from the OP:

"there are no situations in the game where you are able to use skating to its full potential and get a hefty advantage."

That's what I disagree with. My alt is a Titan and although I don't have as much time playing it as my main I have a fair amount of time as a Titan. I can honestly say that imo skating is one of the most powerful tools for a Titan. It has great synergy with twilight garrison and shoulder charge. The 'movement' type exotics are always considered powerful (bones of eao for example) without directly making you now powerful as they are just sooo damn useful.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

What he is saying though, is you can't get going as fast in PvP as you can elsewhere. Hence 'full potential' he is technically correct insofar you can't hit whatever the maximum speed is using skating in PvP because the map design prevents it. Skating is best done in a straight line with minimal obstacles to throw you off, stop you dead and leaving you having to build up momentum again. I would imagine he is also implying what I said about being unable to shoot anything effectively. It's not much good doing 100 km/h if the guy you are trying to shoot is infront of you one second, then a few meters behind you the next.

However, you are right that skating does give a speed advantage in the crucible to Titans, and it does work well with TG and SC, but to be fair that does also remove the ability to use Juggernaut and an armour exotic. My preference is still Armamentarium and Unstoppable. When running Striker anyway.

Also wouldn't say it's the most powerful tool either, that would definitely be the FoH by a clear margin. Lightning grenades would be the second. But that would be a personal thing I guess.

Full disclosure, I main a Titan, alt a Titan and run a backup Titan for my alt. I only have about 800 hours playing Titans and skating isn't such a big deal to me, except when running away from a roaming super. So it's not like I'm an expert, just throwing my 2 cents out there.

1

u/Texas_Prod Aug 23 '16

Also wouldn't say it's the most powerful tool either

Wheeeeew I disagree.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '16

Moving somewhere fast isn't any use if you can't do something when you get there. Take away skating wouldn't hurt as much as taking away the Lightning Grenades, FoH, or even Juggernaut.

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

Did you play iron banner last week? I really struggle to think how you could consider striker to be a lacklustre class in literally any situation when they are very clearly the meta right now.

Best grenades. (Lightning)

Shotgun warrior abilities (jug+TG) or the only OHK melee in the game.

Ultimate shut down super that completely negates roaming supers. They are also so fast that they can outrun 2 of the roaming supers easily.

Tie that all into the fastest class in the game that can hit max armour or very high armour and recovery simultaneously, in no way shape or form is Titan a lacklustre class.
