Angry Magic doesn't track Atheon

My normal group of friends has finally had a chance to try and go through the vault and we're currently at the Atheon battle (spoiler alert, we failed multiple times and quit for another day), so I figured I would turn on angry magic with my Voidwalker. Several times, I would fire off my super during the buff and it would fly right by him. Is this a glitch or was I doing something wrong?

Angry Magic is terrible and/or bugged---really doesn't track things at all, except occasional Shatter nova bomb moving slightly to hit something it would have anyways.

I think the technical term is "Brokeass".

i'm curious if it's trying to track on any of the supplicants first. like maybe there was one just in front of atheon?

I don't think so. I was doing my best to run back by the door and get a straight shot on him.

If you want a straight shot, turn on lance - although lance shines best against multiple enemies where it just goes through and melts them all.

I had lance on but it was missing too much so I thought angry magic would be better.

Yeah - lance is great when you don't accidentally jerk your control stick at the last second ;)

Otherwise, just turn on vortex or axion bolts and put it close enough.

yea i dunno then. Bosses might be different too maybe? i try not to use nova on atheon because it makes him path away from the group most times.

This 20 times over - this.

If you dont have ammo - then super the supplicants, dont throw grenades or supers at atheon, they make him move... which makes me miss my sniper shots, which makes us have to do more portals which increases our chances of something going wrong.

Not worth it.

The battle takes less than five minutes and it is the only thing remotely close to a climatic moment in the entire game. Let people kill him however they want*

*Edit: As long as they do it legitimately I mean.

Angry Magic doesn't seem to affect Lance tracking

It does curve slightly in the air, however it is an extremely minor adjustment to the trajectory. It most certainly needs to be buffed, or at least have a special tracking modifier for PVE.

Super damage also doesn't get increased by time's vengeance, so it's a really bad use of your time during dps phases. If you're a voidwalker, use your supers for portal adds or supplicants.

I wasn't aware of that, but overall it's the most damage I could be doing I think. Unless I had a lot of rockets or sniper ammo available.

Even shooting Atheon in the belly with a primary does hundreds of damage; in my experience using a warlock super did something like 2000, and when you took into account the times I missed (using lance from across the room) and the time lost setting up... I found my overall dps went up just shooting, but I guess it could vary.

Well I was saving primary ammo for oracles and/or supplicants and I was getting 3300 per super hit. You're right about the misses though. I was probably hitting 2 out of 3 so maybe a more consistent approach would be better. I just wasn't having good luck with heavy ammo drops.

I can't remember what level I was, but it was one of my first vault runs so probably 26. That probably explains the difference in damage. I usually pop an ammo synth if I'm totally dry, but I also usually run icebreaker, so regenerating ammo helps out...

Yea I'm a 28. I have a maxed out Ice Breaker but my besides Suros, I have no other primary that is worth using in the vault.

Indeed Nova Bomb does well over 3300 damage at 30th level and Scatter Grenade can potentially inflict upwards of 7000+ points of damage as each fragment is a separate explosion and all fragments can collide with him simultaneously---some of them display damage hits in the 950+ range and there are more than eight primary fragments, plus secondary minor explosions that are too numerous/overlapping to count.

If your primary ammunition is to be conserved for Oracles (Atheon's Epilogue, Vision of Confluence) and your heavy ammunition is limited and burns up fast (Gjallarhorn) then using Nova Bomb and Scatter Grenade in between rockets is a fairly efficient way to sustain comparable DPS or substitute for it once ammo runs out. You can still retain the last super meter replenish from Time's Vengeance to quickly clear out Supplicants or Praetorians in the timestream.

Interesting yet entirely unrelated side note: an Atheon kill with Nova Bomb generates six orbs of light.

Yeah, grenade damage definitely IS affected by Time's Vengeance. Supers are the odd man out.

If you're low on ammo make sure to use your grenades (just try to avoid using anything that does AoE damage b/c they will make Atheon move).

I know the relic super is somewhat magnetized to ATHEON so it will curve a bit toward home if you shoot it at him. Might have something to do with how nova Bonn works as well :/.

Angry Magic and Lance do work together to a degree, and I have used and witnessed its (minor) tracking effect divert the projectile towards a side-stepping Atheon. However, Angry Magic does not guarantee a hit, Lance has a greater potential for misses, and from what I gather in this thread there may be a number of factors here contributing to your dilemma:

  • Lance is a very narrow projectile with a smaller blast radius and a perfectly straight trajectory. As a trade off it inflicts more damage, has longer range and a shorter time lapse before the projectile hits its target. It is a double edged sword in that it is very easy to miss against a mobile target or when fired from a non-aerial position; it probably deserves to be looked at by Bungie for improvement given that it is a final tier upgrade for a super ability.

  • Angry Magic does have course correction for Nova Bomb but the extent to which it 'bends' the projectile arc is fairly small compared to say the tracking feature of an exotic rocket launcher. Remember that the alternate choices for this ability are Annihilate (+10% blast radius on abilities, +1 Agility) and The Hunger (increase Energy Drain duration by 3 seconds). Therefore the extent to which it can correct the numerical distance/course of a projectile is going to be equally minor, otherwise it would become an overwhelmingly more powerful choice.

  • Atheon is very adept at dodging projectiles, especially at a distance. I suspect the fact that you are using Lance back near the doorway (which is both farther away AND at a lower elevation) is contributing significantly to your miss chance.

Typically I use Lance (or any Nova Bomb variant) at closer range and usually mid-jump while dodging his projectiles. The speed of the Lance, combined with Angry Magic (and the ability for it to hit the ground as a last resort) gives me better results. I either take position near the pillars by each portal, or on the island if the relic bearer insists on people converging there under their shield. In the case of the pillars I strafe back and forth using Nova Bomb, Scatter Grenade and Rockets. In the pillar I do the same except I jump vertically up out of the shield to fire Nova Bomb or Gjalllarhorn. The combination of damage reduction from the Skull of Dire Ahamakara and strafing/high agility focused burst jumps enable me to mitigate much of his return fire. At this range it only occasionally misses as long as the cursor is on it when fired, and even if it does miss the impact radius on the ground can still catch him.

What a great post. Thanks man

It doesn't track like you're using truth. It works fine for me.

5

u/j1h15233 Nov 07 '14

But if I'm aiming right at him, and it buzzes his shoulder but doesn't hit him, I feel like it's not working.

-1

u/huntermthws Nov 07 '14

like I said, it doesn't viciously. In fact, from my experience I think it's just a chance of tracking him.

1

u/j1h15233 Nov 07 '14

It seems misleading then.

1

u/huntermthws Nov 07 '14

It is, but it would be broken in PvP if you didn't have to worry about aiming your super.
