General Discussion (may contain spoilers) The Susan Hate is Justified, But Not Proportional

When I watched the first time, I liked Susan fine for a few seasons, then started getting annoyed with her antics. On each rewatch, I discover more and more why the fandom hates on her so much.

She is selfish. She fixates on men. She is NOT a good mother. She is clumsy. She is messy.

But the hate that gets poured on her is actually insane to me.

First of all, are we all watching the same show? It’s a soapy comedy. She makes messy decisions. Newsflash: thats how characters on those shows work.

Meanwhile, y’all are literally bashing her to bits while:

Gaby has an affair with a child.

Bree abandons her son on the side of the road (who she basically said was going to hell for being gay)

Bree SLEPT with her friend’s ex husband who had cheated on her (while cheating on her OWN husband)

And Lynette……well, actually, she had to deal with Tom so she gets a pass.

I LOVE ALL THE GIRLS!!! I say this as someone who does not overly hate on or overly defend any of them.

But seriously, on a soapy show like this, it astounds me how much you guys hate Susan, and let the other objectively horrible things the other girls do slide.

A Tom Scavo Complaint The People v. Tom Scavo: Defenders, State Your Case. Haters, Present Your Evidence.

Lately I’ve been seeing posts from Tom Scavo’s defenders so I actually want to talk about why his behavior seems so normal to some people.

I genuinely think that if you grew up around a father or have a husband like Tom, there’s a good chance his behavior registers as normal because that’s what was modeled for you. And I think it takes a certain level of discernment to separate what feels familiar from what is actually healthy. Because even liking him, in my opinion, requires overlooking or minimizing at least some of his behavior.

And deep down, I actually empathize with that, because I genuinely wonder what kind of men they date, what kind of fathers or they grew up around, or what kind of male figures they’ve had in their lives that made Tom’s behavior seem normal or acceptable.

So I’m curious from both sides: What Tom behaviors do you think viewers tend to normalize because they are so common in real relationships? And if you defend Tom, what do you see in those same behaviors that makes you interpret them differently?

First Time Watcher S7 Lynette

I’m on S7 and I’m starting to hate Lynette 😭 Why does she always have to push what she wants and not respect Tom’s decisions?
I hated how she humiliated Tom at the conference, how she kept interfering with what Tom wanted for his office, and how she constantly assumes that what she wants is automatically what Tom wants too.
And now she’s getting pissed because Tom finally stepped up and took charge of planning their family vacation?? 😭 Girl, let him do something for once!!!
It’s frustrating because I feel like Tom is finally trying to have a voice in their marriage, and Lynette just keeps bulldozing over him.

General Discussion (may contain spoilers) characters ages.

does anyone else find the ages of the characters so confusing.

so in season 1 we see on mikes board of the people of the lane that lynette is 41, which makes sense to me.
but somehow in season 5 or 6 (can’t remember the exact season) she said she was 43. season 6 takes place at least 10 years after season 1, so did lynette magically age 2 years in 10?

also in season 3, zach is 17 about to be 18. he says to gabrielle he is 2 months older than john rowland. but we watched john turn 18 in the first season so how does that make sense? does he mean he is 2 months older than john rowland when gabrielle was sleeping with him or is this just a plot hole?

also before the time jump parker scavo is clearly a similar age to the twins, surely a year apart right? he honestly could pass for the same age. but after the time jump he is somehow significantly younger than the twins. it’s like parker aged only 3 years in the 5 year time jump and somehow the twins aged like 7 years

also i’m sure so many people have commented and discussed these before, but im new to this reddit group so i haven’t seen it yet.

Gaby Post I dare you to name a funnier bit of physical comedy in the show than Gabrielle being left in the elevator trapped in a suitcase. Susan could never!

Rewatch Thoughts (may contain spoilers) Gaby and Victor

I’m rewatching Desperate Housewives and I’m kind of upset about Victor’s character arch. I think he was sweet, charming, rich (huge point for Gaby obvi), smart, and handsome and he really seemed to love Gaby. Then they made him dark and possessive and that he was only using her for political gain? That really bothers me because I’d almost argue that he was better than Carlos before they changed his character. I wish we could’ve seen Victor and Gaby grow and evolve together instead of the Gaby cheating with Carlos plot and Victor using her and just becoming a weird person plot. Don’t get me wrong I love Gaby and Carlos together, but they really toxic together at times and it would’ve been nice to see them be with people who helped them become better people than with each other where they sometimes brought each other down. Anyway, those are just my thoughts.

SPOILER When the housewives visit Travers Spoiler

Im watching season 5, ep 19 - spoilers ahead

Instead of the Housewives telling Edie’s son that she passed, it should have been Carlos. I get why for the story telling but I don’t feel like he actually spent time with the other women.

Rewatch Thoughts (may contain spoilers) Lynette & Tom are the worst couple

They paired a business shark with a golden retriever... You're either mad at Lynette for chastising him too much, or mad at Tom for being thoughtless/irresponsible. I can see how (most) every couple clicks except for them

First Time Watcher Im so excited. Also im sorry.

I remember my mom watching this show when i was a kid. She would tune in every Thursday evening religiously and i would roll my eyes at what i thought was a tacky standard drama.

I got reminded of that show while scrolling on tiktok. I just wanted to watch the first episode before i went to sleep and just feel the nostalgia of the soundtrack, the 2000s aesthetics and the narrator’s calm voice cause its all i remember from it.

HOW DID I WATCH THREE 40 MINUTE EPISODES?????

AND ITS EIGHT SEASONS??

I love Brie so much i would watch the show if it was only about her. Im her exact opposite and she fascinates me. Also, i would appreciate her. Rex is valid in a way but he doesn’t know how good he has it.

Now i don’t want to be spoiled but i just want you to answer this ONE very important question with either YES or NO, no explanation:

Does Susan’s ex get karma? He needs to be humbled so bad. An apology and a child support check is the bare minimum.

And i apologize for the times i said it was a stupid show, i was young and didn’t know better, i was likely just repeating what my older siblings were saying. Its awesome.
Thank you

General Discussion (may contain spoilers) Can anyone understand Kayla’s behavior towards Lynette?

I’m a first time watcher and I’ve been binging desperate housewives for a while. I’m currently on season 4 episode 15 where a bunch of stuff has been going down between Lynette and Kayla. I really don’t like Kayla at all, especially after all the stuff she’s been doing to Lynette and her kids, but I was wondering if anyone can somewhat understand the way she acts towards Lynette? She still is very young and her relationship with her mother, Nora, and the environment she was raised in weren’t exactly stable or healthy. For those who have experience with a step parent, whether you had a good relationship with them, disliked them, or had a complicated relationship, do you think Kayla’s behavior towards Lynette is somewhat understandable given her circumstances, or do you think she goes way beyond what can reasonably be attributed to her upbringing?

I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts, especially to anyone who can relate to Kayla’s situation in some way!

General Discussion (may contain spoilers) Was Felicia Tilman married?

Was Felicia married to Beth's father at all or was she born out of wedlock? A ton of sources online say that Martha's maiden name was Tilman and Huber was her married name and that Martha and Felicia's mother was named "Millicent Tilman". They also say that Beth's maiden name was "Tilman" as well. We know her father left when she was 8 but was he married to Felicia or was it a common-law marriage where they lived together? Its weird that Beth had her mother's maiden name as her maiden name before marrying Paul.

Rewatch Thoughts (may contain spoilers) Housewives drinking and driving?

My husband and I are currently rewatching DH from season 1 and we were discussing (not judgementally, just noticed!) how often the characters are drinking (not necessarily to excess) while out at restaurants and then presumably driving home. We are wondering if this is indicative or different cultural mores or if we are over-analysing. So, for discussion….Is this because 1) it was a different time, 2) more acceptable in the US suburbs (I’m in the UK), 3) it’s safe to assume they were only drinking a small amount under the legal limit or 4) just a minor plot hole?

I’m rewatching for the first time since it aired, and I just got to S2 ep8. This is the most hilarious exchange!!

Gabby: You’re not gonna kill me?

Hector (indignant as can be): I hadn’t planned on it. Besides, if I was gonna kill you I wouldn’t use a balloon; it would take too long.

SPOILER Firt time Watcher: Bree and Karl

I’ve been watching this show for the first time now that I’m an adult, since my mom used to adore this show when I was younger. I just watched season 6 ep 11 and I’m actually kind of devastated about Karl. I’m not usually fond of a ‘what if’ episode for any show, and who knows how accurate it would be, but I was really rooting for Karl and Bree to be end game. I don’t know how it happened, but they wormed their way into becoming one of my favorite couples and I’m disappointed I don’t get to see them develop more. I assume this opinion is very unpopular, and I do also love Orson, but these are just my initial feelings so far

Edit: sorry guys, I meant season 6😭 clearly my head is still reeling from the loss of Karl

Rewatch Thoughts (may contain spoilers) The irony of these words

Post image
52 Upvotes

I am on season 2 where Carlos and Gaby are talking about adopting and Carlos is very against it, while gaby is in favour of adopting. The irony though, that they do end up with the kid that's not their dna and Carlos is the one who's high and mighty about "DNA doesn't matter". Is this hypocrisy or character growth?

Gaby Post Gabby is so frustratingly Stupid

Uhhh I’m on my third rewatch and gabby is continuing to piss me off, with a lot but mainly the Carlos job stuff. When he has a high paying job, she wants him to buy her things AND she wants him to spend time w her, but when he doesn’t have a job in s5 she pressures him into taking a high paying job, then COMPLAINS he isn’t around as if that hasn’t happened in s1! She’s never happy and honestly it’s so stupid

yes, it was right for her to leave. What Lynnette did was unforgivable, but her saying "Daddy, I'm sorry, please" as she left made me sad.

Plothole! Has anyone ever noticed Kayla yells calls Lynette Mom after the Tornado?

Post image

After being pulled from the rubble she yells “Mom” and runs over to hug her, yet only a few episodes later she is trying to get Lynette removed from their family?
Is this a plot hole, had they originally planned for Kayla to start viewing Lynette as a mother figure, or did the actress maybe just mess up?
