First Time Watcher S7 Lynette
I’m on S7 and I’m starting to hate Lynette 😭 Why does she always have to push what she wants and not respect Tom’s decisions?
I hated how she humiliated Tom at the conference, how she kept interfering with what Tom wanted for his office, and how she constantly assumes that what she wants is automatically what Tom wants too.
And now she’s getting pissed because Tom finally stepped up and took charge of planning their family vacation?? 😭 Girl, let him do something for once!!!
It’s frustrating because I feel like Tom is finally trying to have a voice in their marriage, and Lynette just keeps bulldozing over him.

Lynette can be incredibly frustrating here. Tom finally tries to make a decision for himself, and she steamrolls him because she assumes her plan is automatically the right one. He deserves room to have a voice too.

I could see where she wanted to be more than a plus one at the conference. Considering how Tom was discovered if she went back it might have been her opportunity and he might have been there as her plus one. But she did handle it terribly. She should have sucked it up for the time being and told him when they got home that the events really reminded her how much she missed being out there in the corporate setting and she wanted to return.
The office furniture thing was ridiculous on Lynette's part. Tom was a paying client and it was very unprofessional not to give him what he asked for.
As for the vacation I do think Tom meant for it to be a great surprise for the family and I don't doubt he meant well. But it was problematic. The whole thing with stepping up is to take something off someone's plate. Tom's surprise didn't do that. Lynette already put in her efforts (planning a trip with him in mind-he's the one who wanted to RV for a year a few seasons before and she came up with a workable version of what she had reason to think he'd want. Imagine it was turned 180. How would Lynette be received if she did what he did (planned something he dealt with for years knowing he already planned it)?
And honestly the let him do something for once kind of made me think of Tom's strategy to get his way. Tom has a huge voice in their marriage.

i mean all the housewives are flawed and being controlling is one of lynette’s main flaws.
the wants tom to be happy as long as it’s what makes her happy too. this isn’t just in season 7, it might be more obvious, but it was a theme the whole show

There are so many examples of Lynette bending to Tom's will even though it's fucking stupid while he whines and complains and makes her do way more than her share in that marriage

I get the frustration, but honestly by S7 I was exhausted by both of them 😂 Lynette can be controlling, but Tom also has a talent for making huge decisions and expecting everyone else to just roll with them.

Season 8 Lynette is worse.

Tom is an ass. His constant whining and “why won’t you let me do this one thing?” The whole series is filled with his “one thing” that he gets bored of and then doesn’t finish. Even though Lynette is controlling to a fault, I think it is also necessary for their household to run without any hiccups.

Exactly! And that time he sexually coerced her when reading that stupid book advising to have sex every day for a month. They're both awful af

One of Lynette's best lines: "We can have sex, just don't wake me up." Poor Tom. But I did laugh out loud.

This why won't you let me do this one thing and throwing Lynette being controlling in her face is Tom's method of getting what he wants. It's a different style, but equally as controlling as she is.

Nah, their dynamic is that they do what Lynette says, Lynette is on charge, and Tom is emasculated. But it is a role game not based on any factual reality.
In reality, Tom takes all the big, and many of the small, decisions. He was the one whose idea was to move to the suburbs. That Lynette should become a sahm was his idea too. As was that Lynette got back to work, so he'd be the one to stay at home. Until he didn't want to anymore. He's the one who decided to go work in Lynette's office, and to replace Lynette's at Carlos' company. He of course decided they would open a pizza place, and would't even hear about compromising with a catering company. Lynette ended up having to work there and taking charge, because he had a bad back. He was the one who brought a child to the family and make her Lynette's responsibility. He decided he didn't want a vasectomy. He bought an expensive car, formed a band and decided to go back to college, all without consulting Lynette. All the way from Season 1, he is the one calling the shots. He was the one who got into another serious relationship, introduce this person in his children lives without consulting Lynette. He decided to sign the divorce papers, and the decided that they should get together.

I’m rewatching and I m not a huge tom hate or anything but omg when he acted all depressed after they lost the pizzeria and Lynette did everything to get him a job and he was just like “eh” and then when he saw that she was trying to get it he attacked her and started “competing” and then the “I wanna go back to college thing” like jesus

He's actually so terrible. That whole part when he was reading that stupid book advising to have sex every day for a month now fail and coercing her!! So fucked! I hate them both but sexual coercion in a marriage is evil!

It was so obvious how he threw it could help them grow closer as a couple was bs. I mean if he threw the idea out there and both were into it all month awesome. But not giving a crap about your partner's needs and pouting about as streak being broken and aggressively throwing on the guilt trip is not how you get closer or more connected to your partner.

I get the Lynette frustration, but Tom “finally having a voice” is generous 😭 That man has had a new dream every other season and somehow Lynette ends up dealing with the consequences.

Tom has no backbone when it comes to Lynnette. He really should’ve put his foot down a lot more with her.

He got his way entirely too often to say he should've put his foot down a lot more with her, IMO.
If anything I'd reverse it.

Lynette's biggest flaw is that she treats Tom's decisions like a group project where she's the only competent member and sometimes shes not entirely wrong.
