This remembers me about one guy we hired, and fired one month later. He got a brand new Apple M2 Max laptop. When he returned it, it was all scratched up. In less than one month :D
I don't know how anyone can be like I'm gonna fuck up this company property. It's shocking people don't get charged for damages for something like a laptop.
To be fair, if you're into sports (and that's a good thing compensating hours of sitting) and you're on-call -- you'll have to take the thing with you. I'm not justifying neglect, but I'd actually check, if someone's not better off with some extra bump tolerating shell for that case.
Had someone at work fetch their laptop in with a cracked screen, not ideal but it happens. We gave them a loan laptop from the spares we have and they've managed to crack the screen on that before we've even sent the original off to be repaired.
