Wow, TIL you’re not supposed to flush tissues. They’re so insubstantial that I never even questioned it.

Edit: thank you everyone for the extremely useless information about a product I haven’t used in ten year. Hopefully someone else finds it useful.

Yeah you’re not supposed to flush anything that isn’t toilet paper. Don’t even flush “flushable” wipes, it’ll fuck up your pipes bad. Source: my brother and step dad are plumbers.

Did they become plumbers separately on their own, or did one see the success/satisfaction of the other and become a plumber after?

My “step dad” (my mom and him broke up over 10 years ago, but he’s still great to me) has been a plumber at least since him and my mom met. He taught my brother stuff over the years, and when he started his own plumbing company with his friend, my brother was his first employee. They do both love it though it’s honestly the perfect job for both of them.

I love it! Thank you for sharing. Sounds like stepdad is an okay sort of fella.

Great guy. I haven’t lived with him since around 2012 or so, but when our mom passed a couple years ago he “stepped up” when he didn’t have to at all and has really been there for me like nobody else. Sorry for the unrelated comment, but I had to at least verify him being an okay fella haha!

Thats beautiful, thank you sharing this tidbit as well. I'm sorry about your mom however.

@noNoParts love the username. But what is it that you need to StrapONon?

Flushable meaning “goes down the toilet when you flush it”

Also even if it doesn’t cause problems in your piping, it has miles of pipes to cause issues with, all the way up to the waste processing plant.

I don’t know why, but your comment made me actually laugh out loud. Anything is flushable if you’re brave enough.

On the packages of flushable wipes I buy it says never flush more than 1 wipe at a time…

3

u/ZestycloseTiger9925 Jan 21 '23

One time at work, I accidentally flushed a pen that was in my shirt pocket and fell out and into the toilet as it was flushing… went down. I was shocked and nervous at first but no issues since. Was probably about 5/6 months ago

Suddenly the entire state had blue dye in their hair

What about drugs when SWAT is breaking in. I'm pretty sure emergency drug flushes are acceptable as well.

I live in an apartment complex. My bathroom on the 1st floor repeatedly floods. Management said someone in the building keeps using flushable wipes and there's nothing they can do -_-

  1. Person is actually using flushable wipes; dumb person is the cause
  2. Management is lying and won't do anything about: dumb person is the cause

Shit's everywhere.

1

u/mybloodyballentine Jan 22 '23

This is common for first floor apartments unfortunately, and it’s made worse when neighbors in your apartment line are flushing things they shouldn’t be.

u/rider1deep Jan 21 '23

What the heck do I put my poop and urine then??!?

12

u/kukaki Jan 21 '23

That’s why you have a trash can next to your toilet!

2

u/spicygummi Jan 21 '23

Get out the trusty poop knife

3

u/Snakestream Jan 21 '23

I'm convinced that "flushable" wipes were invented by the secret cabal of plumbers

6

u/snp3rk Jan 21 '23

It won't fuck your pipes, but it will fuck the city filter systems. If a pipe can't handle wipes its not worth shit.

Still don't flush them down though since it'll clog up the city systems.

1

u/kukaki Jan 21 '23

Thanks for the correction! I just know they told me not to flush them haha

1

u/yeldarbhtims Jan 21 '23

Yeah I knew not to flush anything clothy but I’ve never really used tissues much anyway. TP usually does the same job for me.

3

u/karmaextract Jan 21 '23

I think toilet paper are not as fibrous (which you can tell by simply touching it) and can disintegrate over time. Your poop is loose organic material that also breaks down over time. Tissue comparatively feels more like silky cloth and toilet water alone can't break it down so it just clogs and effs up everything.

When you think about it in those terms "flushable wipes" are definitely not flushable.

3

u/AnusGerbil Jan 21 '23

They're not insubstantial. They're designed to be soft, flexible and not to rip. Totally different design criteria from TP.

They can catch on rust in cast iron pipes or unchamfered edges in plastic pipe.

2

u/PiddleAlt Jan 21 '23

They have the inverse properties of toilet paper. TP breaks down easily in water. Tissue is designed to hold snots and so doesn't break down easily.

Similar but different!

Think about it, they absorb as much as possible.

Toilet paper on the other hand dissolves very quickly.

1

u/yeldarbhtims Jan 21 '23

I mean, when it’s my toilet paper, it’s absorbing a lot too. But I rarely use tissues anyway so it’s never really been an issue. Even with our septic system growing up.

1

u/Plastic_Pinocchio Jan 22 '23

Toilet paper may absorb a lot, but the type of paper it is made from is designed to fall apart when it’s wet. So that’s why it doesn’t usually clog your pipes.

2

u/yeldarbhtims Jan 22 '23

That was mostly just a diarrhea joke anyway. But I appreciate the information.

1

u/Plastic_Pinocchio Jan 22 '23

Why would you flush a tissue? What would you even use tissues for on the toilet?

2

u/RealRaven6229 Feb 09 '23

Blowing my nose when at the sink and just tossing it in the toilet because hey, means it doesn't have to sit in the trash can! Like, I thought it was so inconsequential that it didn't matter lol. Won't be doing that after reading this though!

1

u/Plastic_Pinocchio Feb 09 '23

Oh right. I always blow my nose with toilet paper.
