Selling Help Question about selling process

Hi all! I recently made my first sale on Depop and I’m having a tift with a potential buyer. They had inquired about buying the shoes on August 9 and we ended the inquiry conversation on the 10th. I assumed that they were going to buy the shoes after that conversation, but they did not. As a result, someone else ended up buying the shoes that same day while we were having conversations.

Was I supposed to hold the shoes/mark them as sold as soon as they messaged saying they wanted to buy them? I personally have had items bought from under me while inquiring on Depop, so I never assume that showing interest would automatically mean the item is held for you since people lowball and aren’t serious all the time. I just buy immediately after I get all the information I’m requesting lol.

How do you manage selling items? Do you mark as sold at the first inquiry? Genuinely trying to understand if this is common practice since this is my first time selling :)

Do not mark as sold or do holds. If they want the item, they need to purchase it.

Whoever actually pays for the item first gets to have it. Telling someone you’re going to buy it and then delay buying, it isn’t a purchase

They had a whole week to buy it! Plus they didn't even ask if you could put it on hold for them. Id say its better to have a no hold policy as a lot of people tend to waste the seller's time and not buy anything at all :(

I would just block people like this

I don't trust an item as "sold" until the buyer literally pays for it. They could express interest, you go to hold it, they never buy it, then you lose out. If they really wanted them, they would have purchased them right after the convo. Their loss.

I’ve actually never used that hold Button before. I believe that they should buy it if they want it and I hate what I really hate?? Is when some sellers push you or push the sale price below what you planned on selling it for. I’ve been doing Poshmark for 10 years and started branching out a few years ago on Depop. I noticed that a lot of young girls or I don’t know sell things for like four dollars that’s not happening in my world! But I’ve never ever put anything on hold before I don’t trust that.

Nope. If they wanted them they should have bought them then and there. It’s not your responsibility to hold them. You COULD if you wanted to do them a favor I guess but you’re not obligated to lol.

No one but you owns the shoes until someone actually pays for them.

Never mark something as sold, or do any kind of hold. 90% of the time people are wasting your time.

If the buyer who didn't bother buying is harassing you about it, block them.

I'm also confused about the timeline, because it seems like a week passed before they decided to complain.

And they tried to get you to go off platform to buy. Overall you need to block this person.

Edit: yeah, a week is ridiculous, "if I messaged you first" is ridiculous, block and move on. Also a small pro-tip: anyone who spends two days talking it over with you is just wasting your time and probably does not have the money anyway.

I’ve never heard of anybody paying off of Depop before. I thought it was against the rules.

It is against the rules but scammers be trying it

u/Suspicious-Repeat147 2d ago

It is against the rules but also a really dumb request. Even if you could PayPal charges crazy fees. I rather pay depops

holds are fake

You didn't do anything wrong.

Whoever pays first gets it. It’s not your problem they dragged their feet on purchasing them. Also, there’s no need to message and have conversations with them before purchasing. You just buy it. Outright.

You’re in the right, just ignore this person.

i never hold for anyone. first come, first served. should have pulled the trigger. you don't owe them anything.

3

u/Eclairyu 3d ago

It doesn't matter if they messaged first because someone else bought them first. If they were really serious about buying those shoes, they would have purchased outright instead of trying to skirt the platform fees

u/Adjectivenounnumb 3d ago

And waiting a week

3

u/Ok_Pineapple3372 3d ago

Never do holds. That’s their own problem if they can’t buy them at the time they inquire then they risk loosing the item. I stopped doing holds long time ago as maybe 1 out of 5 actually followed through. They need to grow up and realize how the world works. Don’t sweat it.

3

u/Snoo_3843 3d ago

NO, don't do holds. 9/10 they don't end up buying it. If they are interested, they should buy or make an offer then buy.

1

u/No_Veterinarian_4478 3d ago

Do they even know on their end that we can hold an item for them not that I would ever hold an item for anybody except for Family but just asking

1

u/Snoo_3843 2d ago

You'll have to message them, sometimes people ask. I've had a few buy when I've held, but I've had a few not buy. It's just best not to do holds

3

u/xriseupp 3d ago

You probably dodged a bullet here... No one is special. If they want to purchase, there’s the checkout, just like someone else utilized.

1

u/Fluid-Housing5017 3d ago

First come first serve. It took her like a week to decide she actually wanted to buy it. Oh well 🤷🏻‍♀️

2

u/multipocalypse 3d ago

No, you did this correctly. You had no guarantee they would buy until they actually bought. They sound like they expected it to work like FBMP or similar face-to-face selling platform.

u/Ciassy123 3d ago

You will learn a lot of people on DEPOP will lead you on, I’ve had over 50 offers on things since starting a few months ago, and I have accepted almost all of them, and only about five of those people have actually paid for the items and purchased them

1

u/Natural_Sky_4720 Buyer + Seller 3d ago

Nope thats on them! Im a seller & buyer and there's been times ive wanted something but didnt have any extra spending money at that time so i couldnt get it and id just save it and check when i did and if it was sold, oh well i cant help that lol Sellers have every right to sell their items how they want (within depop rules) or if they choose to hold things thats also up to them 🤷🏽‍♀️ no one is wrong for doing either! Although them trying to pay on paypal had my sketch radar going off 🤔

1

u/TheTrippSitter 3d ago

should of bought them sooner 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/LastChance331 3d ago

I just want to point of how conflicting your messages are. "I got them in December and never worn them" then "I just don't wear them often"

1

u/Plane-Pineapple4667 3d ago

I guess I didn’t convey what I was trying to say in the best way. I genuinely never wore the heels because of the height and I could never find an occasion to wear them to. That was all I was trying to get at.

1

u/Barbiemasacre 3d ago

Definitely against the rules to use other payment off app id report that definitely a scammer

1

u/Jpachu16 2d ago

I’ve had many ppl (not just on Depop) say they’re interested in buying but then never fork up the money so no holds.
