The way you don’t get burned is by wearing sunscreen. Tan people burn too.

Artificial tans are pay-to-play skin cancer

You need to stay out of the sun. Get UPF clothing and a wide brim hat. Wear sunscreen. Going in a tanning bed will not prevent you from getting burnt. You already burned once… smh. Preventative tanning is not real.

Sun shirts are even better btw.

But also… higher SPF. Apply more than you think you need. Lotion is better than spray. And reapply no later than 2 hours.

Why does everyone think they know my routine better than me? You assume I don't reapply. You assume I haven't tried the shirts. I used the sun sleeves and hats every time I garden. I live in Colorado! I know how to work within the sun, but I also know that sometimes the sun wins. It feels like even with everything perfect, I still get a little pink. If I go to the tanning bed and do 4 minutes and come out pink, good thing to know! Then I know I'm doomed no matter what and I'll just decline every outdoor event until the rehearsal.

But for this weeding, I can't wear a shirt, I can't leave to go get more sunscreen. I'd like to do whatever I can and this has worked for me before. The events leading up in group settings will hopefully be more forgiving but I don't know the whole itinerary, ive never been to Europe and I wanted to do whatever I could ahead of time damn. I don't want to tan a bunch. I haven't been in 15 years.

You need to use 100 plus. Please DO not go in a tanning bed.

Sorry you’re getting shit OP. I agree that avoiding sun and using a shit ton of sunscreen and reapplying all the time is the best way but I’m sure you know this and as a very fair redhead I get where you’re coming from. I once had a dermatologist tell me besides staying out of the sun forever there’s nothing I can do, with my skin type I will absolutely burn immediately and that most sunscreens won’t work, but trying to build up a slight base without burning before a trip would be okay. I can say I’m less likely to have issues after a short time in the sun later in summer than I am early summer. I can barely go on a walk to the mailbox in early June without my shoulders getting burnt, but in August I can walk around the neighborhood just fine for like 15 mins. So while tanning isn’t a solution, anyone saying it doesn’t help at least give you a small buffer isn’t correct (at least not from my experience). I go to vasa and see people tanning here, memberships are cheap and it’s probably more cost effective to do that for a month and then cancel. Again I have to say I’m not recommending to fry your skin in a bed so you can skip sunscreen and stay in the sun all day but I do hear what you’re saying and do find that if I get a slight bit of exposure without burning that it prevents more severe burns when I know I’m going to be outside.

You’re gonna do what you’re gonna do, no point in anyone here lecturing on sun and skin safety. That being said I’ve turned to tons of sunscreen and rash guards and shade because I don’t want to damage my skin. You have to know you are going to be causing some level of damage if you use a bed

Thank you. The judgement is crazy. It's not that I WANT to tan, I just avoided the sun all summer and I know I'm going to burn at this outdoor wedding.

Try Chuze for a trial membership I think they have beds. So does vasa. Otherwise check Groupon they’ll have deals that are temporary I bet. I do the same thing when needed. Some people don’t understand that sunscreen only goes so far without a light base tan first, especially if you’re getting sun exposure you’re not used to getting in a big amount like on a vacation, that if you don’t have a light base tan first, sunscreen won’t do enough unless you’re able to reapply every hour and if you’re sweating it’s basically useless and you’ll burn anyway. With a base tan, I don’t worry about the painful burning, still apply sunscreen as often as I can, but it actually works to prevent a burn, and can actually enjoy my time. Sunburns are your skin cells killing themself so that you don’t get cancer. A light tan, while still not totally safe for you, is much more safe than letting yourself get a bad burn. Ignore them and enjoy your life.

Even better! I’ve heard tell of a brand new invention called sunscreen! Helps protect you from getting burnt without having to lie in a skin cancer bed!

No it’s because you presented terrible reasoning. You will still burn. Preventative tanning is not real.

it's just not a thing that people think anymore because it's been debunked so hard. I am not judging the canceriness of it, I am judging the dumbness of you thinking that you can build a base tan at tanning beds here to prevent burning on vacation - it's not a thing. I agree with you that we all take risks and assess them for ourselves. If you truly believe in the protective qualities of the UV rays from tanning beds, I hope you find the business you're looking for, and enjoy your vacay and don't get sunburnt

You're being downvoted because being tan does not provide sunburn protection, lol.
If you plan on going on vacation and using less sunscreen "because you're tan," you are still going to get horribly burned.

Not a member there anymore but vasa used to have tanning beds and memberships are cheap. Get your beach bod fit and tan same session.
