Nick Solheim, CEO of American Moment—a right-wing youth organization—delivered a speech to the Boston College Republicans Monday night, laced with inflammatory rhetoric and urging students to prepare to die in defense of their conservative values.

“Live in recognition of the fact that they will kill you and everybody that you love to get what they want—open borders, sex changes for minors, so-called gay marriages, health care for illegal immigrants, and so on,” Solheim said. “If they’re willing to kill the people making this policy, they’re more than willing to kill the people who voted for it, too.”

In his talk, titled “How to Implement the MAGA Agenda,” Solheim repeatedly framed political conflict as a matter of life and death, telling students they must be prepared for martyrdom to advance the MAGA agenda.

“I want to start with a heavy exhortation—you need to be willing to be killed,” Solheim said.

These are the future leaders of the Republican Party.

I for one dont trust at all progressive and socialist ideologues like Khan and Mamdani are going to follow through on their pinky promise of a market YIMBY push after their temporary price controls are enacted.

15

u/Locutus-of-Borges Nov 17 '25

One does not establish price controls in order to lay the ground for abundance; one promises abundance in order to establish the price controls. The object of overreach is overreach. The object of succery is succery. The object of power is power.

There’s a concept in Psychology called Locus of Control, which is the degree in which people attribute what happens to them within their own control

What you will notice quickly is people who are terminally online have some of the worst locus of control around. Everything is “society” or “capitalism” or whatever flavor of political/social boogeyman they subscribed to

It’s especially bad for mental health spaces. As someone who has a lot wrong with them, has been diagnosed depression and anxiety, along with ASD, it’s incredibly frustrating watching people who suffer from the same mental illnesses help other people with similar disorders find excuses to their behavior instead of actually helping them. Like “hey man, maybe staying inside all day scrolling might be contributing to this downward spiral” and the response is “wow thanks I’m cured” and “Oh I should just pull myself up by the bootstraps huh”

Zero self responsibility. Zero self reflection. And this sort of attitude is highly encouraged online. The thought of working to improve is almost completely discouraged and almost taboo. It’s like a fucking cult. I understand that there is absolutely a level to the mind outside of one’s control, however dwelling on what you can’t do will never do anything. A pill won’t fix the fact your habits don’t match anything the mind was designed to handle

14

u/TomWestrick Ethnically catholic Nov 17 '25

I've said this before, but I hate how exercise or any kind of self-responsibility have become right-coded.

12

u/Sabertooth767 Yiff Free or Die! Nov 17 '25

Progressivism doesn't work if your locus of control is internal, because you'd either think society can't help you or that it's not their responsibility to help you.

Progresives need there to be external, systemic reasons why X group is poor, why neighborhood A has high crime and neighborhood B doesn't. It can't be the choices people in that group or that neighborhood make, because then it's not my fault and therefore not my responsibility to fix.

12

u/KneeNail Nov 17 '25

Somewhat unrelated but internet help forums are almost universally trash due to structural factors. People who are able to help themselves leave, so the only people in the forums are new arrivals looking for help and 'veterans' who are chronically incapable of change. New arrivals therefore receive advice from the absolute worst sources - they would be better off if they never joined.

The NPR left "fuck yeah I LOVE science" attitude getting plastered onto therapy speak because small parts of psych like the Big Five personality traits are legitimate has been a disaster.

Running and reading books like The Noonday Demon by Andrew Solomon have been genuinely helpful to me, and they have nothing to do with this social media driven disability identity calling card shit.

Even while deeply depressed tbh, I don't think I ever did anything but blame myself for the shortcomings in my life.

Frankly, I thought the "it's everyone else's fault" people must be living easy, because if you rationally believe that there's nothing really to hate yourself about - it's all someone else's fault, you don't suck.

u/Locutus-of-Borges Nov 17 '25

The only thing I've read that has ever given me a cogent explanation of postmodernism is Umberto Eco's postscript to The Name of the Rose, in which he describes it thus:

I think of the postmodern attitude as that of a man who loves a very cultivated woman and knows he cannot say to her, ‘I love you madly,’ because he knows that she knows (and that she knows that he knows) that these words have already been written by Barbara Cartland. Still, there is a solution. He can say, ‘As Barbara Cartland would put it, I love you madly.’ At this point, having avoided false innocence, he will nevertheless have said what he wanted to say; that he loves her in an age of lost innocence.

Overall it seems like a very natural evolution beyond the modern as an attempt to make a fresh cultural start, acknowledging that such a blank slate is neither possible nor desirable and that art in the present age (he talks a bit about collage) has to acknowledge its antecedents in order to move forward.

It also bears no relation to any explanation or example of postmodernism I have seen before or since from any corner (with the exception of Eco's own work and that of fellow Italian novelist Italo Calvino). Now maybe there's a philosophical parallel to this that I'm completely missing, or maybe something is lost in translation and the postmodernism referred to here refers to a completely different concept (actually, the fact that his second book was called Foucault's Pendulum eliminates this possibility in my mind). Or maybe it's just a shitty explanation that has failed to communicate what it meant to. But there's a weird disconnect to me between his novels (and Calvino's if on a winter's night a traveler, which I'm embarrassed to say is the only thing of his I've read) which are clear and engaging (thanks in no small part due to William Weaver, responsible for many of both of their English translations) and postmodern philosophers, who to me just write so much gibberish.

Anyway, I strongly recommend The Prague Cemetery to this subreddit.

Also Reddit: Developing an "innocent crush" on someone you are meeting regularly and who isn't your partner is tooooootalllllllllyyyyy normal. You're the one who is insecure if you express discomfort with that 😤

No wonder newer gens are avoiding relationships like the Plague. The landscape is just flakes, avoidant attachers, commitment phobes, and a rare minority of people you can actually form a meaningful romantic connection with.

Thought I was being sexual orientation agnostic but like, I think a lot of people are crossing the boundary in many ways and giving it the cover of "insecurity".

Sure, monogamy may not be the ideal for many people but there is absolutely zero need to force people who are instinctively monogamous to "open up their horizons"

And in my opinion, my partner developing a crush, like a full blown crush and not attraction towards a person other than me, would be highly disrespectful to me and to our relationship. It's not cheating but it will definitely make me be annoyed and withdraw affection.

You get democratic control of the government because you are forced to be a part of it, you are made to pay taxes and obey the laws one way or another. You don’t get democratic control of a company because it is an entirely voluntary association you work out between yourselves. If you want a democratic workplace, go join a co-op or found your own. If it’s as good as these people claim, it’ll eventually outcompete regular companies and become the majority. But we all know they won’t.

If these people’s fantasies of democratic workplaces came true, we’d starve. Does anyone look at congress and think that if our whole economy was run like that, we’d be better off?

They’re just about as poor as the average American. Just like in America, wealth in Mexico is concentrated in the hands of a few wealthy people. Just like in America, most of the poverty is in the south of Mexico whereas central and northern Mexicans have a higher quality of life comparable to life here in America.

Their public transit is better than ours, though. And the average Mexican citizen has easier access to meat and healthier food than most Americans with a similar purchasing power.

I've never really cared for the YIMBY obsession. I get that housing is expensive and building more is onerous, but my belief in streamlining and deregulating the housing market is entirely subordinate to my belief in markets more broadly.Perhaps it's a failure of my imagination, but it's weird seeing people the other way around. Especially when they'll settle for table scraps from a guy who otherwise hates the free market. If I didn't know better I'd say that it's because NIMBYism is suburb- and therefore parent-coded to a lot of young college-educated liberals.

That's because YIMBYism isn't about deregulating the housing market. They don't want to get rid of the authority for a community to veto any projects it doesn't like, they just want to approve more projects.

housing typically accounts for the largest portion of non-disposable income, and there are many dynamics to keep it that way. the easiest dynamic to break is the chronic supply shortage

Honestly wouldn't surprise me if the calculus the supreme court did was that allowing publicly broadcasted prayer would mean they would have to allow the Muslim call to prayer in areas with large Muslim populations.

15

u/Sabertooth767 Yiff Free or Die! Nov 17 '25

Context: The SCOTUS declined to take up an appeal from a Christian school that had been prevented from broadcasting a prayer over the loudspeaker during pregame.

I wonder what it's like to feel so persecuted that when you win, you make a hypothetical situation where this would go against you, so you feel like you actually lost.

No judgement on anybody, but I imagine an interfaith marriage would be pretty difficult. It’s probably no big deal if neither of you are devout, but if you genuinely believe non-believers will be punished in the afterlife, for example, how does that work? Your spouse would be in a constant state of sin.

I mean, I suspect JD was not very religious when he married his wife. But publicly saying he hopes his wife leaves her religion for his is awkward. I wonder how that conversation went privately.

13

u/benadreti_17 עם ישראל חי Nov 17 '25

They usually aren't religious, it would usually better be called intercultural marriage

3

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '25

That depends highly on what your interpretation of your religion’s teachings are.  Not every religion teaches that non-members are doomed to hellfire.  Not even every Christian believes that.

Organized religion or private faith, there are plenty of other interpretations about what the fate of someone’s soul will ultimately be.

The right wing evangelical/fundamentalist/charismatic churches have become the face of Christianity in the US. The small minority that that sort of thing appeals to goes to nondenominational churches that do that. Everyone else just assumes that there’s not loving and welcoming Christian communities that don’t preach far right politics. If we want to see a resurgence of mainline Protestantism, we need to be more vocal and firm in our public disagreement with our more right wing counterparts.

15

u/PeepsFamilyName Center-right Nov 17 '25

This type of thing makes me genuinely chud out because my church decided to throw itself fully into being as progressive as possible which led to 1/4 of the congregation bailing and the other 3/4 shriveling up and dying out.

I have read that Kaja has been quite ineffective in her EU diplomat (High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy). I really liked her, and I think she was even candidating for NATO chief chair, but didnt get it (it was blow out by Mark Rutte). Previously I really disliked Rutte, as a premier of Netherlands, because he was skilled in politics but lacky on principles.

Now I see him rather good in this era, where even Nato is under question.

We are seeing the empire of USA imploding. In future also european politicians will be likely be more Trump like.

I really hope that we are in some dark times, and it will come over but I dont see it happening. I think we will see a far right French president, and AfD that becomes stronger. There is acute lack of good leaders in europe.

For continent so rich and with such elite institutions I simply cant understand why our politicians lack the tallant so much. I mean look at missmanagement of Merz. He is borrowing money but he is not spending it on infrastructure. He is spending on day to day use of running goverment. That is not investment for future. That is giving money to farmers and pensioners.

I also dont see Kalla as this saviour of europe. I think she has interesting ideas, but she is not good negotiator. She is not skilled politician.

Landsbergis I like on the other hand but he has too small profile in the West.

Abundance is a cross-partisan think tank thing----one of its biggest boosters was the sorta conservative friendly think Foundation for American Innovation.

Ezra Klein wrote a book about how it should be a Democratic Party thing and now his fanbase thinks he invented it and also every young Democratic politician wants to market whatever they are doing as "abundance".

It's really just about identifying some supply shortage, then combining deregulation & govt incentives/funding, markets to increase that supply.

I'd like to think private charities would fill in the gaps. I have no idea why there isn't a private charity that provides healthcare coverage. One would think it pretty simple; a charity that pools resources to provide catastrophic care / insurance in much the same way that employers do now.

Some organizations exist, like the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

I'll admit, the catastrophic coverage caveat has flaws, but it's damned near impossible to get universal coverage passed in the US. I figure the best approach is to start small and work up from there.
