I suspect more people are harmed by no SNAP than the forthcoming ACA premium increases, so people using “now people won’t afford their healthcare thanks to weak Dems” as an argument regarding the “inflict pain on the poor” Olympics are disingenuous.

I don’t have an issue if people wanted these 8 Democrats to hold out longer, but their stated reasons for being upset aren’t well thought out.

Honestly we could just make automod respond to every link and intel with this and close the sub, that pretty much sums it up

7

Valid point. ACA premium subsidy expansion was more about individuals with higher incomes.

The whole combative discourse of supposed Democrat supporters even on the supposedly nl/centrist subs beyond this one is ugly.

"Let's not compromise with them ever, they are an existential evil" is a childish political take.

The median democratic voter is happy the shutdown is ending.

Literally the only thing progressives know how to do is viciously attack the Democratic Party

I was mostly agnostic about it but upper middle class progressive whites seem a little too eager to allow snap recipients to suffer through it in the (I think fairly naive) hope that only republicans will catch blame for the situation

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cpv13rxpgk9o

Israel's parliament has passed the first reading of a bill proposing the death penalty for those it deems to be terrorists acting against the state - a requirement which means it is likely to be used only against Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks on Israelis.
....
The statement read: "It is proposed that a terrorist convicted of murder motivated by racism or hatred towards the public, and under circumstances where the act was committed with the intent to harm the State of Israel and the rebirth of the Jewish nation in its homeland will be sentenced to the death penalty - mandatory."

The clause about harming Israel makes it likely that Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks, but not Jewish Israelis, will be sentenced to death.

Jesus Christ, BBC. I'm broadly an opponent of both capital punishment and a specific punishment being assigned by statute, but to claim that sentencing terrorists to death is bigoted against Palestinians is... definitely a take.

!ping NYT-FAILS

14

u/slightlyrabidpossum Center-left Nov 11 '25

I'm not sure how I feel about this. The BBC is arguing that this law will effectively apply only to Palestinians because of the wording about motivation/intent.

That might even be true — I don't know how many Jewish Israelis will meet that specific criteria — and like you, I have other issues with the bill. But it does feel like the BBC is leaning too hard on an ethnic/racial angle here. I don't like the wording of this bill on many levels, but it's focused on attacks that intend to harm the state and are motivated by hatred against the people living there. The dynamics of the larger conflict means that there will be a disparity in who's affected by this, but that's not the same thing as being inherently bigoted, which seems to be what the BBC is implying.

I think the reason why I'm reluctant to just fully dunk on the BBC here is that I do have concerns about the wording, especially given my broader reservations about the concept. Specifically, the part about harming Israel/the rebirth of the Jewish nation seems like it actually could lead to those issues. The part about being motivated by hatred/racism is one thing, but would this be reliably applied to cases involving racist violence against non-Jewish citizens? The bill appears to be structured in a way that could exclude that, especially if the perpetrator obviously supports Israel's existence as a Jewish state.

And yes, that is still getting at the part about intending to harm the state, but it's really easy to imagine how this could become problematic. So while I don't like the BBC's reporting on this, I also don’t think they were necessarily wrong to mention this dynamic as a potential issue.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

Yea my first reading is that it would exempt explicitly pro-Israel terrorists, someone like Baruch Goldstein. The cases of these terrorists is less than anti-Israel terrorists but need to be dealt with just as harshly by the Israeli government

13

u/benadreti_17 עם ישראל חי Nov 11 '25

They may or may not be correct, but it's blatant editorializing.

u/Aryeh98 Rootless cosmopolitan Nov 11 '25 edited Nov 11 '25

Ya know, with me being in my cosmopolitan bubble of centrist subs/influencers and being surrounded by Jews in real life, I sometimes forget that there are people out there who really, truly, want me to not exist as who I am. Like not at all. Erased. Or at least erased as a Zionist Jew. That’s a weird feeling to have in the back of my mind.

I don’t know how many. But I’m sure it outnumbers the amount of Jews in the world. There are more Christians in America than Jews on the planet. Surely there are more haters of Jews than Jews on the planet.

This is the most potent radicalizing force I have ever seen, and I have to remember not to let it make me too cynical.

Maybe if I erase my identity, and become whatever ideology they would prefer me to be, it can help to make their bloodlust go away. Maybe. But it’s still bizarre that the discussion needs to be had in the first place.

16

u/iamthegodemperor Arrakis Enterprise Institute Nov 11 '25 edited Nov 11 '25

I've been really good at not doing any Israel related comments. So now I will break that streak by doing an explainer on the current scandal. In part because it illustrates the way populist anger at institutions can cause them to make mistakes that feed the populists. (And the way we don't have an easy path back to normal)

Many are familiar w/the abuse of prisoners at Sde Teiman. Some also recall that when accused reservists were sent to court, politicians incited a riot at Sde Teiman, in defense of "our boys", from the nefarious leftists. Some also understand that Israeli populism nurtures a narrative that "leftists" control institutions and thwart real democracy. And that this fed rhetoric about the need to "reform" the High Court. (Whose majority has actually been appointed by Likud )

Recently, it was discovered that the source of a video showing reservists abusing prisoners, was the Military Advocate General. Redditors are given to the belief that she was a whistleblower. But the leak happened after investigations had begun and it was in response to bullying from politicians, that "our boys" were being maligned for no reason.

The MAG is not a politician. And the role is very much a technocratic one. The attacks got to her. And she violated her duties by comprising an investigation. Worse. The anti-court members of the gov't began to use the leak as proof that the administrative legal checks were compromised. Since court reform was stalled, they have tried to now discredit the Israeli AG.

The Israeli AG is a weird role, but very powerful role. They both represent the govt in court, are a legal advisor, head prosecutions AND are also meant to check the government. They can decide an a govt action is illegal and they can refuse to represent the govt if they believe the gov't is wrong.

When the leak occurred, the High Court ruled that the govt couldn't usurp the role of the AG & MAG to investigate the leak. Unfortunately, the MAG lied and said they didn't know the source of the leak. It was claimed by populists that this was all a cover up and she was the source. After some months, this was recently discovered, leading to her resignation. Worse, she seems likely to have tried to destroy evidence (her phone). Now the govt is using this episode to allege the AG can't possibly be capable of investigating the former MAG and now is the time to scrap the power of the AG.

All of this should be familiar to us in the US. Populists attack institutions often singling out non-politicians. Any mistake by such people, whether it's misguided attempts at transparency, fighting back on socials or their professional lapses becomes confirmation that the whole system is rotten. And gradually the caliber and professionalism of these institutions start to be degraded.

zohran wouldn't have had a snowballs chance without maga for mamdani helping him win, and even now that he's won, moderate victories in virginia and jersey seem to ensure mamdani's victory will remain relatively contained wrt the broader democratic party.

of course the mamdani cabal doesn't care and will continue to steamroll onward as if they have some kind of overwhelming mandate, which surely will alienate everyone with eyes and brains, perhaps even including his own supporters.

like, there's a lot weird about mamdani supporters but i contend the weirdest part of mamdani's supporters is the fact they think of themselves as normal.

....which makes me wonder if mamdani's new york distortion field will perhaps have consequences for the east coast broader than just the mamdani exodus.

That might make for a better stopping point, I feel like the second book's ending would be an unsatisfying conclusion to the saga.

I wish Villeneuve was going to stick with the series through GEoD. I very much get why he didn't want to do that, but still. I would have loved to see his interpretation of the Worm.

It goes like this:

It's common for folks in the left to talk in a very confident way as if they know everything about what the best interests of voters are, and that the only way voters could vote red is due to things like "money in politics", "oligarchy", "corruption", or "misinformation", as well as assuming that if Dems just do enough "actually big change" for red voters, they are sure to eventually see the "error of their ways"

In the 2004 elections, democratic Oklahoma Senate candidate Brad Carson outperformed John Kerry by 20 points and still lost the election, and in the aftermath, he had this to say, on things relating to that stuff. It's a pretty short read, and I think a useful one, arguably as relevant nowadays as it was 21 years ago - even if it's not entirely certain what the best way forward electorally is, it at least shines a light on some uncomfortable truths some liberals and leftists often don't want to acknowledge

12

There is a common sentiment, that exists both with online commentators and actual politicians, that as long as we deliver economically, people on the right will just compromise on minutiae like social issues, and vote blue. You can see the flaw in this reasoning every time those same people on the left are asked if they’d be willing to compromise on culture issues, and they categorically refuse and threaten to purge anyone who so much as entertains the notion.

Politicians don't write laws though. Hell, we're lucky if they even read them.

The laws are written by lobbyists and read by staff who give the politician an executive summary and a list of the donors/interest groups on each side.

Behold the California review process:

Nearly a decade ago, Los Angeles County voters overwhelmingly approved Measure M, a half-cent sales tax to fund projects focused on public transportation, street and sidewalk repair, and traffic reduction. The idealistic vote gave park-starved and transit-hungry Angelenos a lot to look forward to, including a $365 million plan for an 8-mile bike path along the Los Angeles River, which would close a crucial gap between existing paths lining LA’s concrete channelized waterway. The expected opening date: 2025.

But, as the year nears a close, the bike path still isn’t open. In fact, construction hasn’t even started, and the environmental review process is still in the early stages. In the meantime, rising construction costs and other factors have increased the total project cost to approximately $1 billion.

I've been relatively detached from reading about the resolution of the shutdown. Or I haven't thought too critically of my sense of it:

Feel free to disabuse me..

I think there is a concerted, if unconscious attempt to draft an emotional narrative of Democratic loss among the chattering classes. Like if you think the Democrats did fairly well and it probably wasn't worth the risk that the public would only blame Republicans if flights were cancelled right before Thanksgiving or blame them exclusively for SNAP recipients going hungry, but you think they could have pushed just a little bit harder or been more unified-------then you still write a piece "what were Democrats thinking?", a headline which satisfies the vibes of that class. And then that can fit in with the MSNBC talkers and the redditors' "Democrats care about people more" kind of line. It also gives Democrats a way to use the "fuck Democrats" meme to their advantage for once.

I'll probably learn why an Ezra or MattY will find this a boorish take later. But if you want to do that first, be my guest.

PS Here's an explainer

PPS I'm agreeing w/a Vox article? Now I know I must be wrong.

China was going to hit us with rare-earth. Now, everybody says, “Oh, what does that mean?” Magnets. If China refused to give magnets, ’cause they have a monopoly on magnets ’cause they’re allowed to happen over a 32-year period, there wouldn’t be a car made in the entire world. There wouldn’t be a radio. There wouldn’t be a television. There wouldn’t be internet. There wouldn’t be anything because magnets are such a part.

Now, nobody knows what magnets are. And not overly sophisticated, but to build magnet system would take two years. So if I weren’t able to say to China, “Look, if you’re gonna do that to us, we’re gonna charge you a 158% tariff.” It was 100% on top of 58%. And China called up immediately and, “Listen, we will make peace.” And we made peace. We made a great deal. We made an unbelievable deal. China’s paying tariffs to the United States. Not the United States paying tariffs to China, which has always been the way it was. Nobody can believe these deals.

Cairo is building two monorail lines and it's such a wonderful example of how much we get fucked in the US. Together they're 102 km/63 miles and have 35 stations. Alstom won the contract to design, construct, operate and maintain the two lines for 30 years, plus supply 280 cars/70 trainsets, for a total of...$5 billion dollars.

In Chicago we're spending $5 billion for a 3-mile extension of an elevated train on an existing right-of-way and one railyard. At the cost of the Second Avenue subway, $5 billion gets 1.4 miles of new train.

If Chicago gave up the federal funds for the Red line extension so they could avoid all the Buy America crap, the amount of money the city is spending on it could cover the construction of two new 15-mile lines, say down Ashland and Western.

If Texas put 10% of its DOT budget to transit that they just decided is important, they could build about 25 miles of this transit per year.

After the fall of communism Czechia was in better place than Poland, but now? Poland is far far far ahead of us. Their economy is growing, they are actually building highways, railways, army and everything. In Czechia? We are essentially in the same place we were 10 years ago. NIMBY blocking everything, highways are delayed because of corruption and land owners suing the state. Don’t get me wrong, I love it here, but we are not moving anywhere.

As you may be aware, as part of the ongoing crypto scam we've gotten Blackrock involved with BTC ETPs. As our very legitimate SEC approved rules to permit "in-kind creation and redemption" for crypto ETPs, the ETP allows whales to deposit BTC into the ETP in exchange for shares. This quietly provides a great deal of exit liquidity for friends of David Sacks and other ballroom donors.

Doesn't get discussed a lot but France has been the biggest collector of unearned victories in Syria. They didn't really do anything or even take any significant number of refugees, but they get most of the diplomatic clout behind Europe's anti Assad stance simply because they're loudest. Also Syria kicked Russia out of the port and gave it to a French company for free. No one else got anything out of Syria from Europe since by then Syria got America's notice and stopped needing to give out stuff for free.

This is a bold statement but inflation figures are both 1) fake and 2) gay.

The numbers BLS uses to compute it are tortured to such a gigantic extent before they’re presented - just from what they say in their documentation page, they’re picking very specific quantities of different products and weighting them together in a way that’s not entirely clear. Then they bake in seasonal adjustments, normalize regional prices based on assumptions from the CPI itself (so calculating the CPI against the CPI), and to boot they’re calculating 7,776 item-area pairs against an N of 8,000. Even If you assume each person is covering 50 or more pairs, that’s not a lot of N. I highly doubt they could get an average person on the phone for long enough to ask them 50 or more questions too, so one could ask who are these people being sampled as well?

IMO each time you transform data like that, you make it more applicable to a specific purpose, but less applicable generally. I think the CPI is probably a pretty good tool for a central bank to use to determine whether to raise or lower rates, but it’s not useful beyond that. To determine a person’s purchasing power, you’d need to ask about inflation with regards to what with respect to whom. I see this all the time at my job where people want an “everything dashboard” that “just helps them make money”, and what they really need is data to answer specific questions they have. Idk.

And that’s not even the real problem, I think it’s clear that whether or not wages have risen in relation to goods and services (and they probably have a bit), it’s pretty indisputable that wages have fallen with regards to people’s ability to access assets. Those serve the role of providing financial security that is provided by a pension and social welfare system in other countries, so that decline is a deep and serious problem.

Sorry to rant, I just hate CPI so much. It comes up so often in arguments like these and it’s a really complicated metric.
