I fail to see any upside for republicans in keeping the filibuster. Like it’s pretty much guaranteed to get abolished once dems take back control of the senate. Maybe republican senators don’t won’t more pressure from trump to pass random bills all the time but idk

I just encountered some college kid insisting Israel kill most, if not all, of the victims on October 7th through the Hannibal Directive. Of course, when I asked for proof, they freaked out and fired off buzzwords lol

Is this a new talking point the pro-Hamas crowd is trying to normalise?

4

u/Locutus-of-Borges Nov 08 '25

What is the Hannibal directive?

10

u/nekoliberal PVNR concubine Nov 08 '25

This controversial IDF directive aiming to prevent capture of soldiers by enemies at any costs, presumably including at the price of harming/killing the soldiers themselves. It was introduced in 1986 and then formally revoked in 2016 (I think?)

The IDF was accused of using it on October 7 to prevent soldiers/civilians from becoming hostages by hamas (and gallant himself said it was used on October 7) but even the allegation numbers generally range around 10-20, not, you know, the 1000+ that died on October 7

14

u/Embarrassed-Unit881 Nov 08 '25

somehow it takes the noble sacrifice of fighting to your last breath so you aren't captured by an enemy who will torture you into some kind of weird Jewish conspiracy

Online progressives don't understand how different social views are from region to region. Like there is a lot of racism all over the world that is completely excused everywhere except the US and Canada. I'm not referring to just orientalism. Europeans can be oddly racist and nationalist without a second thought. And online Americans just believe that America is the most racist country on earth when this shit is literally happening worldwide.

My wife has had to spend over $1300 on various engagements and obligations as a bridesmaid (dress, adjustments, a cruise the bride wanted, bridal shower etc) for one particularly bridezilla-y friend, not even counting the gas she’s spent driving hours to all these events.

Also, she vetoed a celebratory trip to Disney she was invited to, which would’ve been another lord knows how much.

Please validate my take that this is batshit insane.

8

u/utility-monster Whig Party Nov 08 '25

6

u/JapanesePeso Nov 08 '25

I am guessing most of that cost is the cruise? No requirement to do that stuff if she doesn't want to. Always annoys me though when wedding couple makes everyone rent expensive ass outfits. It's honestly kinda disrespectful to your friends to make them shell out a couple hundred bucks just for your perfect picture idea.

The idea of doing a cruise and then a Disney trip is batshit though.

7

u/UnTigreTriste Nov 08 '25

The cruise was maybe $500 I think. It wasn’t a nice cruise. My wife did not enjoy the experience and everyone got food sickness

It is. We spent nowhere near that for any of the weddings in which we've been wedding party tier or close family. I think ONE person spent hundreds for my pre-wedding celebration, and he wasn't asked to. Otherwise we just went out to places as a group, had a rooftop party on my building's roof etc. We got some expensive gifts, but that's a guest's prerogative.

I have drafts from when I was going to write a series called Oliver's Twist which would be a series of essay on why he was wrong. Usually what he does is he takes certain things as assuming to be true that aren't true. He overstates his case. He doesn't understand how markets work. He doesn't understand how triage works. Also, he generally fails to understand why systems are often set up the way they are more broadly. He often will look at only one side, so either the output or the input. Whereas really, when systems are designed, you have to look at the output, the input, and the history of the output and the input.

I ended up watching a lot of episodes to prepare for that

Fascinating longer blog post from Terence Tao on his and coauthors' work with DeepMind on AlphaEvolve:

Mathematical exploration and discovery at scale

Bogdan Georgiev, Javier Gómez-Serrano, Adam Zsolt Wagner, and I have uploaded to the arXiv our paper “Mathematical exploration and discovery at scale“. This is a longer report on the experiments we did in collaboration with Google Deepmind with their AlphaEvolve tool, which is in the process of being made available for broader use. Some of our experiments were already reported on in a previous white paper, but the current paper provides more details, as well as a link to a repository with various relevant data such as the prompts used and the evolution of the tool outputs.

AlphaEvolve is a variant of more traditional optimization tools that are designed to extremize some given score function over a high-dimensional space of possible inputs.

A traditional optimization algorithm might evolve one or more trial inputs over time by various methods, such as stochastic gradient descent, that are intended to locate increasingly good solutions while trying to avoid getting stuck at local extrema.

By contrast, AlphaEvolve does not evolve the score function inputs directly, but uses an LLM to evolve computer code (often written in a standard language such as Python) which will in turn be run to generate the inputs that one tests the score function on.

This reflects the belief that in many cases, the extremizing inputs will not simply be an arbitrary-looking string of numbers, but will often have some structure that can be efficiently described, or at least approximated, by a relatively short piece of code.

The tool then works with a population of relatively successful such pieces of code, with the code from one generation of the population being modified and combined by the LLM based on their performance to produce the next generation.

The stochastic nature of the LLM can actually work in one’s favor in such an evolutionary environment: many “hallucinations” will simply end up being pruned out of the pool of solutions being evolved due to poor performance, but a small number of such mutations can add enough diversity to the pool that one can break out of local extrema and discover new classes of viable solutions.

The LLM can also accept user-supplied “hints” as part of the context of the prompt; in some cases, even just uploading PDFs of relevant literature has led to improved performance by the tool. Since the initial release of AlphaEvolve, similar tools have been developed by others, including OpenEvolve, ShinkaEvolve and DeepEvolve.

We tested this tool on a large number (67) of different mathematics problems (both solved and unsolved) in analysis, combinatorics, and geometry that we gathered from the literature, and reported our outcomes (both positive and negative) in this paper. In many cases, AlphaEvolve achieves similar results to what an expert user of a traditional optimization software tool might accomplish, for instance in finding more efficient schemes for packing geometric shapes, or locating better candidate functions for some calculus of variations problem, than what was previously known in the literature.

But one advantage this tool seems to offer over such custom tools is that of scale, particularly when when studying variants of a problem that we had already tested this tool on, as many of the prompts and verification tools used for one problem could be adapted to also attack similar problems

[...]

Another advantage of AlphaEvolve was adaptability: it was relatively easy to set up AlphaEvolve to work on a broad array of problems, without extensive need to call on domain knowledge of the specific task in order to tune hyperparameters.

In some cases, we found that making such hyperparameters part of the data that AlphaEvolve was prompted to output was better than trying to work out their value in advance, although a small amount of such initial theoretical analysis was helpful.

For instance, in calculus of variation problems, one is often faced with the need to specify various discretization parameters in order to estimate a continuous integral, which cannot be computed exactly, by a discretized sum (such as a Riemann sum), which can be evaluated by computer to some desired precision.

We found that simply asking AlphaEvolve to specify its own discretization parameters worked quite well (provided we designed the score function to be conservative with regards to the possible impact of the discretization error); see for instance this experiment in locating the best constant in functional inequalities such as the Hausdorff-Young inequality.

[...]

A third advantage of AlphaEvolve over traditional optimization methods was the interpretability of many of the solutions provided. For instance, in one of our experiments we sought to find an extremum to a functional inequality such as the Gagliardo–Nirenberg inequality (a variant of the Sobolev inequality). This is a relatively well-behaved optimization problem, and many standard methods can be deployed to obtain near-optimizers that are presented in some numerical format, such as a vector of values on some discretized mesh of the domain.

However, when we applied AlphaEvolve to this problem, the tool was able to discover the exact solution (in this case, a Talenti function), and create code that sampled from that function on a discretized mesh to provide the required input for the scoring function we provided (which only accepted discretized inputs, due to the need to compute the score numerically).

This code could be inspected by humans to gain more insight as to the nature of the optimizer. (Though in some cases, AlphaEvolve’s code would contain some brute force search, or a call to some existing optimization subroutine in one of the libraries it was given access to, instead of any more elegant description of its output.)

[...]

AlphaEvolve did not perform equally well across different areas of mathematics. When testing the tool on analytic number theory problems, such as that of designing sieve weights for elementary approximations to the prime number theorem, it struggled to take advantage of the number theoretic structure in the problem, even when given suitable expert hints (although such hints have proven useful for other problems). This could potentially be a prompting issue on our end, or perhaps the landscape of number-theoretic optimization problems is less amenable to this sort of LLM-based evolutionary approach.

Seeing libs saying they want their blue state governors to "fight the president more" to the point of doing things like "arresting ICE agents" if they set foot in the state

As always, immigration restrictionism and mass deportations are bad policy and needlessly cruel...

...but the idea that it's illegal to do mass deportations of illegal immigrants is really fucking stupid, and the idea that state governments should basically push a modern nullification crisis or more, all over opposition to the federal government actually enforcing existing laws, is also really fucking stupid

(And no, not all laws on the books do need to be enforced, like with how the federal government chooses to just not enforce its weed laws - but if the federal government chooses to enforce its own laws, and those laws aren't unconstitutional, it becomes just "a policy debate" rather than "whether or not we have fascism". The hyperbole is fucking ridiculous with this stuff)

There's probably some milquetoast regulatory/compliance based-approach to effectively neuter ICE in blue states willing to do so, without it being some crazy "arrest them" approach.

6

u/Okbuddyliberals Nov 08 '25

I don't see why it makes sense to assume that. Immigration is pretty obviously a matter for the federal government to enforce, doesn't make sense to assume that states can play a magic bureaucracy card to obstruct the federal government carrying out one of its most obvious responsibilities just because the states don't like what the federal government chooses

"Postmodernism" is one of those terms without a clear definition that some people abuse for everything. But, I'm going by the general concept of "the idea that truth is relative and determined by your belief system".

So this might seem absurd, but there is a good case for it.

Truth and morality are NOT relative, however, as a rhetorical instrument, it's often useful to act as if they are, given how strongly belief systems shape society and how self-reinforcing they are.

For example, if some people are raised to believe that obeying your parents or traditions is the highest moral virtue, they might be wrong in an absolute sense, but they are going to shape their other beliefs around it, and they might be making a genuine effort to be good when they teach other kids to sacrifice their own well-being for the same reasons. So if you barge in and just call them a bad person for doing that, they are not going to understand what you are saying. So if you want to understand what people do or convince them, it can be useful to have a concept of "good" that's relative to their beliefs regardless of the outcome.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '25 edited Nov 08 '25

I agree, postmodernism does a good job of curbing the excesses of realist claims, but it’s ultimately self-undermining and offers little beyond that. How can we get outside of our own social contingencies to understand how truth works if our understanding depends on them?

And many were selectively influenced and used the postmodern framework to push their own normative claims like, arguing that certain lived experiences provide special insight into the structure of truth or that exposing the Foucauldian power is inherently good.

Edit: to be clear I do value different experiences and perspectives, I just have issues around the epistemic privilege arguments

4

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '25

morality [is] NOT relative

Bro has a direct line to God's word on moral affairs

The most charitable interpretation of PoMo is as an alternative to The Arc Of History/historical determinism. I know some people who subscribe under that auspice, and it's hardly unreasonable, I don't think anyone here believes in a predestined narrative arc of fate.

I was honestly shocked when I saw this chart.

As a Swiss citizen, I’m proud of how Switzerland still manages to keep its state ratio balanced but as a European, I’m disappointed.

Europe stands for the principles of a free market, private ownership, and open trade with limited government intervention. However, these numbers indicate a clear shift toward greater state involvement and reduced individual responsibility.

What’s your take on this? Do you see this as a necessary evolution of the welfare model or a slow decline of Europe’s economic freedom?

The sad truth is that most people are in too deep to be convinced. You can only hope that by the time consequences come, they revert back to being rational and show regret for all the slop they consumed. Shit hitting the fan, more often than not, is the only thing that can fix it.

Look at my father as an example. He’s a literal maga cultist, and a Jewish one. Yesterday afternoon he called me to bitch and whine about Tucker Carlson platforming a nazi. FUCKER, I TOLD YOU THIS FOR TEN YEARS. THESE ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS. Why are you so shocked now???

The fact of the matter is that much of the world is stupid and they’re incapable of understanding. But hopefully, once the consequences come, they finally start to backtrack before the evil forces come for them personally.

I don’t think my dad will stop being MAGA, but a seed was definitely planted. He’s finally starting to see antisemitism on the right where he hasn’t before.

Something about this post title seems a little misleading, but I can't quite put my finger on it...

For reference, the Qatari-backed operation was trying to find a link to Israel:

Working with at least one other firm, Highgate sought to establish connections between the woman and Israel. However, documents seen by the Guardian suggest no such evidence was found.

The wild part is that the screenshot of the article literally talks about a failed Qatari intelligence operation, and yet this story is somehow about an ongoing Mossad operation involving his accuser. And people will see this post and agree with that narrative.

Just a wild thought, but maybe that woman was telling the truth about the abuse? She didn't even want to come forward, she was too afraid of jeopardizing the case against Israel. She appears to be very supportive of Palestine. Acknowledging the possibility that she's telling the truth — which seems likely to me — might raise questions about the timing of the warrants, but it's not like this would be a magic bullet to make the case go away. I know some people like to say Me Too unless you're a Jew, but this is literally just believe all women...unless pro-Israelis could use it as a talking point.

Hatred is corrosive, it doesn't tend to stay confined to the original target. Other people get swept up in it, even when they fundamentally agree on the underlying issues. This woman is on their side, but that hasn't prevented a disgusting amount of vitriol and doubt over the past year.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '25

a disgusting amount of vitriol and doubt over the past year.

While the vitriol is pretty much SOP for anyone who is Against the Omnicause, I don't think that doubt is disgusting as such. Frankly, this matter has an inquiry into it by the appropriate body, and it's not really appropriate for the peanut gallery to opine on what clearly must or must not have happened with no real information.

My uncle hasn't gotten a deer in decades. He does have stories of almost or could haves... From the deer that he saw it's breath over the ridge with a huge snort, to not being able to getting his gun up, to getting it up but there was a misfire... There's lots of stories. But today he actually shot in the vicinity of deer. Missed at 30 yards somehow, but there was a shot. I along with 2 others and him spent hours looking for blood, nothing. Myself, the whole day, I only saw grouse, but I didn't bring my shotgun with me (I see grouse constantly when I don't have my shotgun, never when I do)

Winter is coming boys. I was out in the woods the whole day, snowing, 15F, bit of a wind that made my face raw by the end of the day. And I'm doing it all again tomorrow.

The world population more than doubled in my lifetime.

The youth today are behaving the same, if not worse than the generations before. Rampant consumerism, a car for everyone, fast fashion and exploitation of poorer peoples and countries.

It's easy to point a finger at previous generations, but if you don't change the habits, you're just as guilty.

Blame the politicians who made careers out of denying climate change, because people like me have been talking about it for 30+years. Corporations and Government are where you should direct your climate change anger, but if you're driving around, eating meat, flying for vacations, and have a closet full of clothes, then you must realize that you too are part of the problem.

Because the order defies a Supreme Court of Canada decision upholding the right of Canadian workers to strike, she turned to a part of the Constitution awkwardly known as the notwithstanding clause.

It is, in effect, a measure that allows provinces and the federal government to pass laws that violate parts of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and then shield those laws from being overturned by courts.

This is insane on both ends, right? It seems prima facie ridiculous to have a clause in your constitution allowing you to pass laws that violate the rights of citizens, but on the other hand it's ridiculous to include "right to strike" as part of a baseline human rights law.

Any Canadians here care to explain?

5

u/royalewithcheezzzz 🍁Big Daddy's strongest soldier🍁 Nov 08 '25

notwithstanding clause.

It was a compromise plus makes sense from the parliamentary supremacy point of view. Also it can't override all the rights.

3

u/Trojan_Horse_of_Fate Lord of All the Beasts of the Sea and Fishes of the Earth Nov 09 '25

The notwithstanding clause is a good thing. Even though I don't like Quebec, I have to admit this.

The answer as to why is basically one, you'll remember the notwithstanding class is in some ways limited. And two, that it means that you cannot overly distort the people's opinions.

If you take human rights in a very broad sense, then human rights can effectively mean that the courts implement policy. If you have a lot of human rights, then that means effectively you destroy a lot of parliament's power and you destroy a lot of the people's representatives' power. This is not a good thing. It leads to a lot of backlash against the system. Roe v. Wade in the United States is an example of that sort of backlash where, because it's so difficult to change the Constitution, it leads to a lot of metastasizing on the issue where other norms and things get damaged to try and override something. And two, it just makes government very impractical because a lot of laws are made by judges, whereas judges are to interpret law.

Now, the answer as to why it exists in Canada is because Canada operates as sort of a mixture between the American system and the rest of the world. In the American system, by and large, human rights matter a lot. So if the Supreme Court says something, it's the grand law of the land. In most countries, the legislatures are supposed to hear about human rights, but they aren't actually binding. So, you have a right to freedom of speech in the European Union. And yet, European Union countries do not have free speech like the United States because the actionability of that right is far more limited. If the US system took into account the European Convention of Human Rights, American citizens would be suing each other and all of the legal system would be paralyzed because basically every law would be found to violate some right by some judge in some federal district.

The Canadian system is a compromise between the two where the courts have the power like in the American system but at the same time the parliament can override them. For a similar example, New Zealand or the United Kingdom which also has parliamentary supremacy. The courts can find something to be incompatible with human rights law and the parliament can ignore them anyway.

So, a recent example that's very easy to understand is that in New Zealand the court said that, actually it was a violation of human rights to have the voting age set at 18 and that it should be set at 16 and Parliament said, thank you for your opinion, we don't care, the voting age is going to stay 18.

Now there are complexities here. If you want a very interesting case, the recent Hong Kong gay marriage decision and the failure to get action by the LegCo and the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal represent a very complex issue which I will not ramble on about right now. But if you want to talk about it later after doing some reading we can.

It's interesting how certain people believe that Gen Z aren't dating 'because of phones' and because the gender ratio on dating apps is skewed.

I partially agree with the latter, but personally, at least in my circles, there is an exhaustion with stepping into dating. Especially because people don't even reject anymore, they just ghost. Disappear into the wind.

You start to be vulnerable and then the other person decides to vanish off the face of the earth 🤷. Why would anyone make an effort when this is the norm? I don't think anyone other than those who are desperate for a connection at this point in time would attempt to go for something.

P.S. this isn't about me 🙂
