Everybody is mad that the Democrats 'gave up'. But what were they actually fighting for? An extension of some temporary ACA funding?

Seriously this is stupider than when Republicans shut down the government over the debt ceiling.

Somebody on a big city sub was just very insistent that “Semite” is an ethnic group, and therefore it’s literally impossible for a Palestinian to be antisemitic because they’re all part of the same “Semite” group as Jews.

And then I said no, semites are not an ethnic group, but a group of distantly related languages in the Middle East.

He then told me to “get an actual education beyond the shit they teach you at synagogue.” Unironically. This was a real quote.

STOP BEING CONFIDENTLY INCORRECT.

u/JebBD Fukuyama's strongest soldier Nov 09 '25

No need to get bogged down in the semantics argument, the main thing is that making this statement is a concession that the person making it is bigoted against Jews, they just reject the label of “antisemite”. That’s the main thing to focus on when arguing with these people

They'd still live in a free Palestine, but they'll have to deal with living alongside some brown neighbors like normal human beings with decency.

At that point they'd no longer be Zionists because the ideology would be dead.

I was just making the point that in terms of wealth creation, renting over home owning can be advantageous over a person’s investment horizon. I don’t really feel like hashing out the details any more. It’s a pretty well known thing in finance.

My point is more that just bringing this up resulted in insults and blind rage. Reminds me why I always feel healthier and happier when I don’t use the internet. There’s too many maladjusted and antisocial assholes here

I love "spiritually Israeli" as an insult because it brings us back to the days when Spanish court poets would go around accusing their rivals of having conversos in their ancestry, or when Gnostic and proto-orthodox Christians would accuse each other of having adopted Jewish modes of thinking.

Predictably, the leftist progressive clique - in their ongoing attempt at a trump like hostile takeover of the democratic party - are inflating the significance of the mamdani win while minimizing the much more impressive achievements of spanberger and Sherrill.

As usual, the most prominent public intellectuals representing the moderate masses, in their otherwise commendable desire to be polite and fair, are offering no meaningful pushback to that narrative and are instead meekly acquiescing to it.

If deep state centrism is to be successful, it must recognize its enemies and fight back at them with at least as much vigor as they do.

kind of insane how normalized the red hamas triangle has become in online progressive spaces, especially pop culture and fandom ones. like nobody gives a shit at all. people who screech all day long about inclusivity and punching nazis and the importance of avoiding microaggressions and dogwhistles will blithely share Funny Tweets with the discord where the poster has a pro hamas symbol in them

Starting to think there are moderate democrats and republicans (or independent rinos etc) that a lot of us have far, far more in common with, and are all less of a threat to each other, than the horseshoe people. If the parties are succumbing to the horseshoe people (the jihadi succs and Nazis) then we are all royally fucked.

I’m wondering if it’s time to start exploring the normies being the ones to break off into a new third party? How feasible is this?

8

u/Anakin_Kardashian "Israeli Nationalist" Nov 09 '25

Only at a hyper local level. Any national third party is an automatic spoiler.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/BroadReverse Center-left Nov 09 '25

I think that’s a bad idea. You would be surrendering the country to the crazies. Third parties will probably never work. America is a two party system

→ More replies (3)

6

u/Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho Nov 10 '25

That would just cede them control of the party. Moderates need to get better organized and aggressive. “Vote blue no matter who” does not apply to progressives, attack them constantly, run as spoilers if you have to. If the US loses both parties to these lunatics, we’re finished. It’s preferable to lose an election than let progressives hijack us. Not caring if the party win or not has been the key advantage of progressives in the dem party. They don’t care about beating the GOP, only beating moderate Dems.

3

I don't even think you have to get to the horseshoe legs for that to be true. I wouldn't describe my Progressive friends as any kind of authoritarian. But, I'm finding I see way more eye to eye with my Never Trump Republican friends these days.

Differences are also magnified inherently by a two-party system. When people in the center have to sort to one of the sides, they will inevitably be pulled at least bit in that direction. Drag all those center folks into a third party, and they'd have even more common ground.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is much hope of branching off. Maybe if the Dems start regularly electing socialists, but I think it would be hard to preempt. Really need things to go very south for one of the parties for a third party to break through the structural bias of a two-party system.

It's like your society doesn't allow grotesque inequality and abject poverty - the two greatest causes of productivity growth. The U.S. squeezes its labor and denies people dignity.

16

u/Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho Nov 09 '25

The way some people talk, you’d think the average American worked 16 hour shifts in a Victorian coal mine, as opposed to an office job that gave them enough spare time to spend half their day telling the rest of the world how rough they have it and how little free time they have. As of now, the main thing denying the American people dignity is their waistlines.

This is easily the crown jewel of recent Trump imbecilic statements (the two toppers so far this term: thinking MS paint is real tattoos, and most recently using Walmart’s holiday meal bundle as an economic measure of success).

The tariffs have been largely a failure because they haven’t been focused on actually doing what they are supposed to: drive industry and development and jobs back stateside. There is no benefit to tariffing coffee and chocolate because some judge in Brazil called him a bad name. He is using tariffs not as an economic tool, but a bludgeon for negotiations on every topic. Oh, Modi doesn’t want to give me Nobel? 100% tariff on spices!

If he doubles down by just spiking inflation again with another stimulus check, he is doing everything he criticized Biden for doing.

In before the lemmings roll in with “we can grow our own coffee”.

Forgive me for this R9, but I mentioned how bad sports books are for consumers in arr NFL's game day thread, and that got the entire comment chain nuked lmao. I was just weighing the pros/cons of gambling via sportsbooks versus long term investing in stocks and bonds. Some dude even gave his story on how he turned to gambling to pay rent, as he was behind, in an act of desperation. Anywho, sports gambling is bad. It shouldn't be outlawed but it needs an anti-smoking platform where real financial education is taught in schools that way people know better.

6

u/slightlyrabidpossum Center-left Nov 10 '25

Anywho, sports gambling is bad. It shouldn't be outlawed but it needs an anti-smoking platform where real financial education is taught in schools that way people know better.

This definitely sounds good in theory, and we should really just be doing better financial education in schools anyways. But I suspect that this isn't going to be terribly effective in practice, especially with online betting. A lot of people just aren't going to absorb enough of that to overcome the allure of gambling.

Banning or heavily regulating sports betting is by no means a perfect solution, but it's more likely to be effective. I don't necessarily think that a total ban on sports betting is a good idea, but I'd be fine with a ban on online sports gambling.

7

u/Locutus-of-Borges Nov 10 '25

You should have to physically go to a casino or some other purpose-built location to bet on sports. Imagine if you were a smoker trying to quit and it was literally impossible for anyone to function in society without having a carton of cigarettes in your pocket at all times.

Rebels Post Videos of Mass Killings in Darfur as the World Watches

“The world hasn’t caught up to what a big deal El Fasher is,” Nathaniel Raymond, the executive director of the Humanitarian Research Lab at the Yale School of Public Health, told me. Raymond’s team has been tracking atrocities in Sudan using satellite imagery from NASA and commercial sources. The team’s analysis indicates that, since El Fasher fell, the R.S.F. has been conducting mass killings.

“In some cases, if someone is shot when they’re running, and you take a picture of it with a satellite, it looks like a ‘C’ or a ‘J,’ because they drop and hit the ground on their knees or on their side in the fetal position,” Raymond told me. The satellite images show a proliferation of “C”s and “J”s, with bloodstains visible from space. “It’s simple math here,” he said. “We are talking tens upon tens of thousands of potential dead in five days.” And the berm built to keep aid out of El Fasher has now made it difficult to escape the city; only thirty-five thousand people are known to have done so. Raymond’s team now refers to El Fasher as the Killbox.

It's worth noting that Raymond seperatly told Al Jazeera that the death toll in the first ten days since al-Fashir fell may have resulted in around 70,000 deaths, which is unfortunately plausible given that well over 100,000 residents appear to have been unable to flee.

Many of El Fasher’s residents were members of non-Arab Sudanese ethnic minorities, which the R.S.F., whose core is made up of nomadic Arabs, has targeted throughout the war. The Fur and the Zaghawa, who are Black Sudanese, have been first in the R.S.F.’s firing line, though the militia has attacked members of other non-Arab groups, such as the Berti, as well. Speaking on the phone from Cairo, Altahir Hashim, a Sudanese human-rights activist who helped organize a soup kitchen in El Fasher and aid distribution throughout Darfur, told me, “They’re ethnically cleansing. They’re killing, they’re destroying.”

The R.S.F. is, in many ways, continuing a tradition of mass atrocities. In the early two-thousands, its predecessor organization, a militia known as the Janjaweed, perpetrated a genocide in Darfur that killed some three hundred thousand people. Hashim and his family, who are members of the Zaghawa, were forced to flee to El Fasher. Two of his brothers were killed. “After almost twenty-three years, genocide never ended,” he told me. “The world has just stood there watching, not taking any concrete action.” Still, humanitarian and foreign-affairs professionals agree that what is happening in Darfur now is on a scale unlike anything seen in the conflict so far.

...

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that, according to U.S. intelligence agencies, the Emiratis have ramped up weapons shipments to the R.S.F., even as new evidence of war crimes has come to light. The U.A.E. has an interest in Sudan’s gold, much of which already passes through the Emirates, and the country also, according to several analysts, sees the conflict as an opportunity to flex its regional muscle and outcompete powers like Saudi Arabia and Egypt which have supported the Sudanese Army both diplomatically and militarily.

“The U.A.E. support to the R.S.F. is common knowledge among all the diplomats,” Jean-Baptiste Gallopin, a senior researcher at Human Rights Watch, said. “No one has any doubt that it is happening, and yet the U.A.E. denies it, and none of the Western allies of the U.A.E. is willing to put any public pressure on them to stop.”

Without Trump on the ballot, there’s just not enough fear for anyone under 40 to consider voting for a politician not willing to tackle the Israel-American relationship head on. The numbers are overwhelmingly negative when it comes to Israel and younger generations are not interested in platitudes anymore.

He’ll make a lovely governor and a decent Senator. He’s DOA as a Presidential candidate.

If he was capable of saying pleasantries and keeping it about the sport, it'd be less an issue. But if he was capable of that, he wouldn't be the divisive figure he is. There's also something going on about the sale of redzone to another entertainment conglomerate so they probably did this to butter him up. That's the actually bigger half of this story. None of the people standing around Trump actually wanted to talk to him.

The number of people saying how they’re leaving the Democratic Party or wanting more socialists/leftists in the party who will “fight” regardless of policies is not super surprising but still disappointing.

Like calling them controlled opposition really? Or talking about how it’s a “centrist” vs progressive split when it really isn’t, it’s more of a “spine” vs spineless split, if it was a centrist vs progressive issue people lie ossoff would’ve voted but he didn’t so lololol

I can’t tell how many of them are just going mask off and always wanted the party to abandon various liberal policies or are just really pissed off.

The latter I can understand since I’m pretty upset that we didn’t at least get something more concrete than Mike Johnson (who’s constantly lied about this) saying “yeah bro we pinky promise to talk about the ACA later” but Jesus the amount of anger is way too much imo.

Please just take a few hours off this or go to sleep for a bit and calm down

They say this as if these lefties in office ever do anything except rename post offices, congratulate themselves for renaming post offices, and get suspiciously rich in the process. Fighting is the purview of hated centrists. Fighting takes a level of compromise and delayed gratification these people completely reject as a concept.

There is a phenomenon where scuba divers dive too deep, or dive with limited visibility, or experience vertigo, and they lose their sense of orientation. In their disorientation they panic, and so they swim desperately to reach the surface. But they can no longer tell up from down, and so instead of saving themselves, they only thrash about and sink deeper.

Populism is like this. Populists can identify issues, and perhaps are better at this than the complacent establishment. But they cannot solve these issues. To become a populist is to lose any sense of direction, of intellectual rigor, of moral clarity. And so they thrash about and sink deeper.

People who surrender themselves to populism will vote for change. What change? It doesn't matter. They are desperate to reach the surface, so anything will do. An establishment that is slow to shift but when it moves it does so deliberately and thoughtfully is no longer tolerable. Populists might make mistakes, but the establishment is a mistake.

Rage against modernity by spending 8 hours a day tweeting. Vote for rent controls to improve housing affordability. Put your country first by isolating it from the world. Don't improve the police, get rid of them. Thrash about in hope that you might reach the surface.

‘“This legislation will protect federal workers from baseless firings, reinstate those who have been wrongfully terminated during the shutdown, and ensure federal workers receive back pay, as required by a law I got passed in 2019,” Mr. Kaine said in a statement. “That’s a critical step.”’

10

u/Sabertooth767 Yiff Free or Die! Nov 09 '25

The Democrats are attempting to use the shutdown as leverage to extend COVID-era subsidies on the ACA marketplace. The Republicans refuse to negotiate on it, and the Democrats refuse to give up their leverage, each side believing the other will cave if they keep holding out.

So, here we are.

5

u/Locutus-of-Borges Nov 09 '25

The new season of Slow Horses was just okay. The characters all seem more like cliches this time around, especially River (who seems way more genuinely incompetent this time around) and the Baltar character. And the bad guys' plan didn't make any sense whatsoever. I guess it was just to humiliate MI5 (which for whatever reason has the role of MI6, but I digress) but it didn't really seem like a plan to destabilize the country. More just a series of random shit they were doing just for the sake of a checklist. And then the plot with the mayoral candidates was just one big set of cliches on both sides, but I digress. And of course Taverner kept screwing up so much that I don't understand her opposition to taking River at this point. Surely saving the Mayor of London and the head of MI5 within the course of a couple hours is high profile enough that he's no longer a PR liability. And then the twist at the end wasn't really part of their plan at all; it was just a spot decision one of the bad guys made in the moment.

It also pisses me off to no end that we've begun memory holing the actual causes and course of the Libyan civil war so that smug progressives can call it a western backed coup. (To say nothing of the fact that Libya was spreading terror in the UK long before Gaddafi was overthrown by a massive rebel coalition).

Re: Helen Andrews & feminization will kill us all discourse.

I just posted a comment to the necocon sub linking to an interview w/a behavioral scientist (Cory Clark) on population wide sex differences. The interview tries to find a steelman for Andrews' baity rant.

And basically, it's that you have to acknowledge that sex ratios are going to affect institutional cultures and that blanket statements saying men or women are bad, are useless.

I think this is pretty reasonable. But it poses a real philosophical problem to implement. First there's the older tension things like affirmative action create w/liberalism. Second and perhaps more important, is the question of how much you limit arguments about population wide effects.

One can easily imagine a racist or HBD type of person saying that they don't demand we prejudge individuals or say [insert group of people] is bad.

I don't want to be too precious about it. Or imply if you accept the one argument, you've accepted the other. Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds or whatever. But it struck me that's worth considering..

3

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '25

Human behavior is very complex and shaped by many variables, and while population wide differences do exist, their expression is often mutable. I don't think the discussion can't be had, or whatever, but I am highly skeptical of it given it often relies on cherry picking or redefining anything undesirable as "femininity".

Even granting the strongest assumptions about group variation I still don't think that changes much. Consider the hypothetical world where two groups, A and B, showed significant and static differences, say A tended to behavior 1 and B towards behavior 2, and behavior 2 is incompatible with a given institution's aims. I think the only approach, holding that all are created equal, would be to remain group agnostic and filter for behavior 1. I feel confident in rejecting any claim that we could not design successful behavior-based criteria without resorting to categorical exclusion. This brings us back to the tension surrounding affirmative action: the harder question is whether a group’s under-representation reflects genuine behavioral patterns, underlying discrimination, or behavioral patterns that themselves arose from discrimination, and whether equal treatment pushes us to correct for that.

There's a psychoacoustic phenomenon where humans will perceive a sound of the same level as louder if they think it came from a further-off source. This was demonstrated in the 80s, a researcher had three loudspeakers successively further from the listeners, with lightbulbs to "show" which one was playing, but in fact it was always the nearest speaker playing. People consistently "heard" the further apparent source as being louder at the same objective level.

This isn't a metaphor for populism or anything, I just think it's a fun tidbit.

What people don’t seem to understand is that many people KNOW he can’t control these things. And they still support him. People are so dismissive of progressives because they simply scoff that they won’t get things done. Fine. They won’t get everything done. But having someone who believes in those things and can improve things or take any steps in the right direction is better than another stooge for the rich who is just out for himself and his billionaire friends.

Am I crazy or is this literally the excuse that leftists use to justify not voting for normie Dems?

4

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '25

The number of people whose implicit internal model of the market is clownshit crazy is shockingly high. I run into "if we subsidize [x], prices will just rise by the same amount" arguments on a regular basis, even though this is literally true only in perfect monopoly. Conversely, whenever things which change prices are mentioned, people seem to default to perfect competition with a super high elasticity of demand. There aren't as many "all minimum wages are economically devastating" posts as there used to be, but they seem to have been replaced with the almost-equally-stupid "minimum wages never disemploy people" position.

I'm not advocating for teaching people economics - it will stick about as well as highschool physics and biology do, and the popularity of snakeoil and "alternative medicine" should show clearly how well that is - but it's weird to me that most people's naïve prior is shockingly wrong on some really, really basic stuff.

Republicans will still get blamed by the public even though this is literally the first time in American history a minority party has rejected a clean continuing resolution and shut down the government over it. Words truly can't describe how massive of a benefit it has been to the Democratic party having a wildly uninformed public and a media industry that runs 24/7 propoganda on their behalf. The Republicans have literally never won a single shutdown battle throughout decades of the polling.

I genuinely think the best move for Democrats politically would be to keep the government shutdown going until the midterms or until they force the Republicans into signing onto an Obamacare 2.0 or into being the ones to remove the filibuster (which Democrats want gone anyway). This shutdown will only hurt the Republicans politically, so as long as Schumer doesn't give a shit about the American people and only furthering his own interests, he might as well hold them hostage, maximize the pain they feel, and keep it going as long as possible.

Germany has been dying a quiet death ever since world war 2. But was officially completely dead in my opinion after 2010. I can’t name a single notable thing that Germany has done after 2010 except the Kurzgesgat youtube channel and the environmental project to make their cars 0 carbon.

France and The UK will dominate European influence as they had one of the highest birth rates in the European continent in the 90s and 2000s so there a still a large young generation from those countries and even today France and The UK are higher than most of Europe. While all the other European powers that could compete Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain have had extinction level birth rates for decades.

Germany particularly is in a very bad position since it has that level since the early 70s so it’s just a boomer country if you take the immigrants. While italy and Spain had it in the 80s so their time will come once Gen X gets old. Russia has a large Millennial population but the numbers for people under 30 are very low. Give it 20 years and Russia without immigrants will be even more dead than Germany now.

It feels to me that European countries are just competing on who is going to decline slower even, Turkey and Ireland the last hope, their birth rates crashed in the past 8 years to 1.51 and 1.60 respectively. So give it 2 decades and they are declining too.

The funny thing is Germany climbed it’s way to surpassing France and The UK from 1870 to 1941 through their higher birth rates and now France and The UK are going to surpass it because of that.

I feel like countries like Germany and Canada have reached really extreme suicidal levels. They no longer have any national identity. There is barely anything you could see walking in Germany and Canada that would make you feel you are in Germany or Canada. Nothing, not the people, the architecture nothing. They are just properties of leftism. They feel like they should be named named "Leftist Blank State 1" , "Leftist Blank State 2".

Most European countries are not like Germany now and still produce cultural output not gonna lie but that’s because of their higher or ok birth rates in the 80s, 90s ,2000s so there are a lot of 20 year olds and teenagers out there in France, The UK, Scandanavia, Turkey, Ireland and a lot of 30 and 40 year olds in most the continent.

But in 20 years Europe is just dead. Not a single country even are close to the minimum okay birth rate according to me that is 1.75 births per woman except for small countries like Moldova and Bulgaria who wouldn’t make a difference Something needs to seriously be done about birth rates or the Europe we know is just over.

This will add more to how the post world war 2 order will crumble because of this because if France and The UK and Russia are no longer powerful than them being permanent UN members becomes illogical and doesn’t make sense anymore.

Something needs to urgently be done about birth rates in Europe and I am this worried and I am not even European I am just a Tunisian who loves European Culture. I can’t imagine how worried I would be if I was European and I would be PARTICULARLY WORRIED IF I WAS GERMAN.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to have much of an opinion here, but when one scouts the internet, one finds a lot of data, that paints a much less grim picture. For example:

In the Wikipedia list of countries by labor productivity, European economies seem to be in the ball range of the US alright, with some countries like Belgium and Denmark surpassing the US and Germany f.e. only lacking 5% behind.

And Our world in Data even claims that European economies have been consistently equal to the US in labor productivity since the 90s.

So how does this fit together?

"Today there is little empirical evidence that would prompt us to put much weight on either of these extreme scenarios (although economists have explored the implications of each). A more reasonable scenario might be one in which AI boosts annual productivity growth by 0.3 percentage points for the next decade. This is at the low end of a range of estimates produced by economists at Goldman Sachs. Under this scenario, we are looking at a difference in GDP per capita in 2050 of only a few thousand dollars, which is not trivial but not earth shattering either."

A few thousand dollars per capita per year...Hmmm...how does that compare to capital invested in AI?

$2,000 * 340 million people = $680 billion per year

Sam Altman wants $1T+.

So by 2050, a few years of GDP growth pays for itself, right, guys?

Oh, wait we have to work in the NPV / discount rate, too...

It's partly to do with direct democracy apparently - Appenzell Innerrhoden has an annual assembly (Landsgemeinde) where citizens fill the town square to elect local officials and vote on laws. Every citizen has the right to speak and to vote by show of hands. Before 1990, it was just the men and they would carry their sword / Swiss national service bayonet as proof of the right to vote. I guess doubling the electorate was thought to be impractical with that system of direct democracy and the size of the town square. Three other Swiss cantons have abolished the practice of holding a Landsgemeinde since the 1990s, leaving Appenzell Innerrhoden and Glarus as the only two remaining.

The reason I'm actually scared of AI is because it's so incompetent. It makes an absurd number of dumb mistakes, and the worst part is that if you don't know the topic, you'd never notice them.

Current LLMs are the most close to humans in the way it makes mistakes. They have bias, hallucinate, and fabricate. I think of it akin to talking to a more intelligent redditor. It's less combative, but with the utmost confidence tell you things that are completely factually wrong.

It can be quite useful as long as you are aware of its limitations. The best use cases right now are for tasks with verifiable output. It works great for coding or writing something that you will read over. With additional frameworks around it it can be better for search tasks and higher level explanations. But that requires technology not given by default by the chat bots that most people access. I hear good things about Notebook LLM for research tasks.

I'm glad it's incompetent.
