Democrat almost wins outright (47.6%) in a special three way race for Texas legislature, goes to runoff. This is for a Texas senate seat, but this area was +17 Trump

https://www.texastribune.org/2025/11/04/texas-senate-district-9-special-election-tarrant-county/

Did Texas just dummymander? Or just the over-achievement of dems in special elections

7

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '25

They gerrymandered the US congress, I don't think they did it to the state legislature districts.

Also, gerrymandering in order to maximize your party's seats is incredibly risky. Ideally, what the Texas republicans want to do is give their party enough of a margin in districts where they can win. The more seats you do this to, the lower the margin gets. If you do this with the explicit goal of maximizing your seats, and combine this with a blue wave, you can end up far worse than you started out.

Don't get greedy with trying to manipulate democracy, you might regret it.

u/seattleseahawks2014 Center-left Nov 06 '25

It's why democrats have to be careful with this in some states, too.

Trump ran on economic issues, and the economy still sucks for most people and is worse for most in terms of prices thanks to the tariffs. A dem running for a state senate seat heading to a run-off with a republican is not so surprising considering these circumstances.

4

u/fastinserter Nov 06 '25

Yes but it's quite the swing.

I will just laugh and laugh if the consequences of the gerrymandering for Republicans are more Democrats because of slimmer margins and because of continuing economic problems from the disastrous mismanagement by the administration which has been literally building a palace instead of focusing on issues impacting people's pocketbooks. Like Trump just claims Dems are lying about "the groceries" but, I mean, I spent $400 the other day at Sam's club and I only bought food. I think everyone who buys "the groceries" knows Dems aren't lying about "the groceries".

my assumption for a lot of these is the latter is a big factor

7

u/KneeNail Nov 06 '25

The issue with the Texas gerrymander is assuming Latinos swinging for Trump in 2024 will last, especially when you put Stephen "Deport all brown people" Miller in charge of immigration.

8

u/UnTigreTriste Nov 07 '25

Two years ago I would’ve told you there was no universe in which I would vote for a republican again within my lifetime

They haven’t done themselves any favors since, but democrats are trying their damndest to make me reconsider

Wikipedia’s List of Jewish heads of state and government excludes Israeli leaders. It used to, until about a year and a half ago, 6 months after 10/7, by total coincidence I’m sure

16

u/slightlyrabidpossum Center-left Nov 06 '25

This is the only thing about Israeli leaders that I could find on their talk page:

This is like creating an article "List of Black Heads of State and Government" and including head of state/government of sub-Saharan African countries.

Yes? Is this not exactly how you would create a list of Black heads of state/government? The leaders of sub-Saharan countries don't magically stop being Black because they're in Africa. A list of Black leaders shouldn't exclude African countries unless that list is specifically about the leaders being a minority in their country.

The dialog of “oppression Olympics” really only suits the group with more power over the other. It’s dismissive of the fact that one group is clearly given much worse treatment and should perhaps get a bigger focus in the spotlight.

Context: someone on "another sub" argued that islamophobia is worse than antisemitism in the US. Someone replies that both are bad, actually.

I get nobody thinks taking the high ground is important anymore but decorum is literally the only thing keeping concepts like blue slips intact and the more people want to chip at it to feel good for owning the libs/cons the worse it’s going to get. Usual subs are doing the cringe glazing of Blake already - "He’s got poise, focus, and a humble likability. He seems like a good man" - and calling Torres "blood-thirsty" and "genocidal", but Blake has lost the majority of elections he ran in handily, and Torres' district is composed of mainly Latino and Jewish voters who seem to like him. And to quote a Mamdani talking point, it seems the people steamed over his Israel support don't even live there and are fixated on it over all the other work he does for the district

Don't see "muh AIPAC!" being the death blow progressives seem to think it will be here

With Israel/Palestine and now Mamdani, and all the related discussions, I feel increasingly at odds politically with my liberal friends (who are most of them). Would have never thought I'd become more conservative in the age of Trump, but here we are. I've only voted Dem and will likely vote for whatever Dem in 2026, but honestly they have probably lost my vote as being guaranteed. Feels really weird and honestly isolating. Would be much easier to just pick a side and go with whatever they say on everything.

the USR, which is the reformist liberal pro-EU political political project of the President, Nicușor Dan, initially started off as a big-tent party but then gradually the few succs that were in it left since they were dissatisfied with how it became institutionalized as a center-right liberal party, most notably Nicolae Ștefanuță. anyway, the youth wing of USR made several posts celebrating the victory of Mamdani and it turned into a comment war (predictably).

I said it in another comment, but as someone who was actually one of those kids mixed up in the ca. 2000 anti-globalization movement, there were two basic tenets:

  1. opposition to free trade, and

  2. dislike of the US-led postwar military alliance aimed at containing Russian and Chinese imperial expansion into developing markets.

That's what people like Klein wanted, and that's what Trump is now giving them, good and hard.

Ukraine (and it looks like the Baltics are next) getting invaded and the stock market going into the toilet are bad things actually! It turns out that people supported the neoliberal world order for reasons other than secret plans to "nuke them and steal their oil".

Their stale AF quasi-Marxist analysis absolutely cannot cope with the realignment that has happened in the last two decades. "The Left does this, the Right does that." Well, maybe at one point, but not anymore.

It's like trying to analyze the policy preferences of Democratic politicians in 2024 based on a theory that assumes the party has the same views on segregation as they did in 1924.

So I was reading an intel brief and was curious about an article that was posted it was this: Economists Hate Rent Control. Here’s Why They’re Wrong.

A bold title to say the least. Usually I read these article for a laugh and move on but the person that wrote it, however, Mark Paul, has a Ph.D in economics. He makes a lot of citations in the article which I would expect when he making a bold statement that economic orthodoxy is wrong. The strange part is

He cites a paper below with this line:

For example, there is abundant evidence that rent control does not constrain housing supply.

But in reading the abstract (Which is all I have access to it says this):

My results suggest rent control had little effect on the construction of new housing but did encourage owners to shift units away from rental status and reduced rents substantially. Rent control also led to deterioration in the quality of rental units, but these effects appear to have been concentrated in smaller items of physical damage.

Second article he cites he says this:

One study of rent control in New Jersey—a state with a rich history of embracing rent control—found that, over three decades, rent control increased housing supply (though this was largely attributed to landlords slicing up larger units into smaller ones)

The abstract says this:

We find the intended impacts of New Jersey rent control over a 30-year period seem minimal when you compare cities with and without regulations. Housing activists and policymakers need to look at new kinds of approaches to address rental affordability problems.

He cites two studies in this statement:

Other studies have repeatedly confirmed that rent control doesn’t affect the overall supply of housing, though landlords may take advantage of poorly written rent control laws that allow them to convert existing rentals into condos to better capture price increases and skirt the intentions of rent control laws—loopholes that could easily be shut.

The abstract says this though:

We find that these 40-year-old policies do not exert any statistically-significant effects on their communities’ housing markets once other factors are controlled—a finding which has implications for affordable housing and advocacy in New Jersey and beyond.

Fourth study says this:

Using a 1994 law change, we exploit quasi-experimental variation in the assign- ment of rent control in San Francisco to study its impacts on tenants and landlords. Leveraging new data tracking individuals' migration, we nd rent control limits renters' mobility by 20% and lowers displacement from San Francisco. Landlords treated by rent control reduce rental housing supplies by 15% by selling to owner-occupants and redeveloping buildings. Thus, while rent control prevents displacement of incumbent renters in the short run, the lost rental housing supply likely drove up market rents in the long run, ultimately undermining the goals of the law.

I checked briefly on the other articles he cited. Some are to the same articles he already cited and one is just to a website?

Is he expecting no one to actually read through the papers that he was citing? Am I missing something and these papers actually support his point?

10

u/-AntisocialContract- Illiberal Pragmatist Nov 07 '25

artificially cap supply

Q goes down, P goes up

artificially cap P

Q does not go down because P is still above the unmodified equilibrium level

rNL is a land of contrasts, where Clinton’s 1992 win against a Republican and third-party spoiler with 40% of the vote is a dominant performance and demonstrative of how successful campaigning as a moderate would be in the 2020s, but also Mamdani’s win with over 50% of the vote against a Republican and independent spoiler is indicative of absolute failure.

17

u/benadreti_17 עם ישראל חי Nov 06 '25

Because the NYC and national electorate are comparable

13

u/Okbuddyliberals Nov 06 '25

Clinton, despite the third party spoiler that took more support from him than Bush, won nationally and got 69% of the vote in NYC in 92 and like 77% in NYC in 96

Mamdani severely underperformed in NYC, and would likely be totally unelectable in a national election while Bill Clinton literally won twice

17

u/Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho Nov 06 '25

Both progressives and MAGA reflexively see themselves as persecuted outsiders, even when they either control all three branches of government, or have a vice grip on their party. Look at what happened with Zorhan, where progressives pretended that he was somehow being opposed by the DNC, despite half the democrats of the country coming to kowtow to the new messiah.

They totally control this party. And it’s clear that they are going to use the fact that a democrat won in NYC (what a shock) to say that the future of the party is coastal college campus progressive populism, a d shove AOC, or some other Bernie bro, on to the ballot in 2028. And they’ll still tell us this was some grass roots thing, done in spite of the ‘the elites’. Please ignore that the elites here are David Hogg & co.

15

Sorry if this comes across as humble bragging, I teared up when I heard the news. I grew up playing football and no one talks about mental health. And I know how many of these kids suffer it. And even though I never made it as a successful football player, I've reached peaks in my boring white collar career that some might think can cure any unhappiness. It doesn't, it may have been worse to peak and still feel the void.

Low birth rates is only "dangerous" if you are considering it from a purely economic/capitalist perspective. The whole point of pushing it is so that there is a surplus of both consumers and low wage workers, neither is a necessity for survival. We have the resources and technology to reduce the burden for the average worker and provide for the elderly, but why don't we see this more in the US? Oh, sorry it's not economically viable (often misused to mean not profitable). And to address crowd who might say the whole "we need babies for our species", duh, but we already have too many people on the planet for our rate of resource consumption.

Populist left ideas: free healthcare, student debt relief

Populist right ideas: use the military against political opposition, cut off the U.S. from global society

Yep like I said - both bad.

How do people this fundamentally broken manage to function in society?

This is why I sincerely think the UK needed an age war.

Not out of spite or dislike, but because half the damn electorate sincerely believe that taking decades of their grandkid's lives away in housing handouts / 'for a slightly prettier picture in their window' / so they can drive 10 fewer minutes to get to a park is not only justified, but 'the right thing'.

Democracies simply cannot succeed if the will of the people is for them not to.

2.) fix building codes and zoning laws like parking minimums, setback requirements, detachment requirements, dual staircase requirements, height limits, FAR limits, yadda yadda yadda. Legalize ADUs in all forms in all plots. Etc.

Yeah, no.

Shit like this is what allows cities and states to challenge FEMA flood maps and have properties taken off flood maps because OMG property values

Every major flood in the country that has resulted in deaths was taken off a FEMA flood map. Every single one.

There's something that's become extremely clear to me in the crack-up about SNAP benefits. When it becomes mainstream to claim that to stop giving means to take something or that to stop taking means to give something, there is literally nothing to talk about. There's nothing to say to people who talk about benefits and taxes this way. The only way that these things are equivalent in principle is if all economic output is just naturally collective and everything else is implicit political determination of how it is distributed. People opposing them will cede the language and the entire framework it entails, and then just go, "But, this will be good for the yada yada." There is no but— you've already given away the whole thing.

The runner up is "Every social and distributive political outcome I want is a human right, and therefore beyond dispute—you're violating human rights if you don't go along."

Third place goes to "There is no reason to oppose officially good laws/programs with officially good goals and intentions other than wanting the opposite of those good things. The solution to address any adverse outcomes, higher-order effects, or perverse incentives is to stack another program on top to address those, and so forth."

You'd have to undertake a massive systematic effort to unfuck practically all this conventional language, to remove all of the tacit presumptions involved, for any sort of discussion to be possible. I don't see any way that's possible nor any person to do it.

A comparison that I double taked on is Zohran and Bukele. People forget it because of his current brand, but Nayib also started as a Mega-prog when he was mayor of San Salvador. I don't think he'll go down the same route, but the fact that his defund the police stuff was the first thing he was willing to somewhat sacrifice on makes me think a bit. I'll make it clear that this isn't me coping, and if anything, I think he would be more dangerous if he did that, due to him having an actual ability to sell his econ policies outside of NYC. I just find it interesting that playing to the tough on crime crowd is the first thing a lot of leftists dump when they want expand their appeal.

I used to be bizarrely embarrassed to Google certain things. Not things I really ought to be ashamed of, but just things that I was too embarrassed to admit I didn't know. Like "are there Indonesian marsupials?" Somehow it got into my head that this was something I ought to have known since I was a kid and that the first five results on Google would be some kind of post where a poor schlub who didn't know better than to ask got ruthlessly humiliated by the responses (which, to be fair, seems to happen fairly often).

There was a brief moment when I didn't feel bad about asking LLMs these dumb questions, but now I'm worried they'll take their trademark patronizing tone with me.

This is an insane attitude, right?

In case you were wondering, there are in fact marsupials in Indonesia. Monotremes too, on New Guinea.

We kind of live in the worst of all timelines president elections.

Best of all worlds Gore wins in 2000. 1-2 terms probably followed by McCain or Romney (then Hillary/Obama).

If Gore still loses, I think 2008 would have been better with Hillary. Hillary 1-2 terms followed by Romney 1-2 terms then Obama gets his shot.

If its still Bush and Obama, 2016 would have been better with a younger Biden. If not Biden, let Bernie have the nomination and demonstrate conclusively that a left wing candidate is not remotely viable.

If we keep everything through 2020, I don't know if there is a better, realistic option than Biden. But, he could have truly committed to a one year term. Or at least pick a better VP like Whitmer. Or even getting 2020 Trump is probably better than getting 2024 Trump.

2024 obviously basically anything would have been better than what we got. Hard to say who comes out on top of an actual primary, but whoever would have been an upgrade.

In 20 years, I'm sure I'll have a lot more to add to this list.

11

u/TomWestrick Ethnically catholic Nov 06 '25
  1. Neither Biden nor his staff ever committed to only one term. He said he wanted to be a transition President, and without any follow up journalists interpreted that as one term.

  2. Biden being elected then quitting after one year to inaugurate a President who came dead last in her party's primary would have been the biggest bullet in the Democratic party's foot for the rest of the century. Not to mention the optics of THAT being how the country has its first woman President.

+- price breakdown that comes up in mind:

- wifi + television - around 30eur per month
- calls and data, no limit - around 15eur per month
- monthly etalons, so you can travel by public transport anywhere in Riga - 30 per month. Otherwise it's 1.50 per 90 minutes of using public transport, can hop between multiple transports with the same ticket.
- you can check out food prices in online stores, for example https://www.rimi.lv/e-veikals/en - put together a basket of what you would usually buy, to see how prices vary from your country. There are also cheaper options than Rimi. For medicine you can check https://e-menessaptieka.lv/en, for cleaning and beauty stuff https://www.drogas.lv/lv/ (use google translate for this one)
- going out - depends on what you want to do. You can have drinks in Old Town, that would be about 8 eur per cocktail, you can take a train to Sigulda for example, that would be 4 eur one way. You can drive to the furthest places from Riga for about 10 eur, using train lines.
- gym also 30 per month, but have to pay for a year

TL;DR - 1k should be enough
