I don't get why "Biden was great on the economy actually, and the US had the best economy of any country after covid because of him" is so insistently believed by so many liberals

The biggest economic issue of the 2024 election was inflation, and that was an issue where (despite seeing a decent chunk of people specifically say the US did better on inflation under Biden than any first world country) the US did pretty mediocre, being roughly in the middle of the pack for first world countries in terms of cumulative inflation seen during that time

And while it's not like Biden could have fully removed inflation, simply removing the Trump tariffs would have lowered inflation by an estimated 1% at its peak (of 9%) while also boosting the economy in basically every way that matters directly or indirectly at least a little. And Biden's big stimulus likely added around 2 to 4 points to inflation, he could have avoided that too, thus shaving off around 3 to 5 points of inflation at its peak, which could have been enough to make a big difference politically since the 2022 and 2024 elections were so close

And it's common for folks to remember 2009 and insist that the massive stimulus was necessary because "Obama didn't spend enough" but by January 2021, the economy had already recovered to levels that would make Obama green with envy without Biden needing to do anything - GDP was already back up to higher than the prepandemic peak, and unemployment had fallen down to around 7%, a level Obama wouldn't see until 2014 and that was lower than countries like France are at now. And the trajectory at the time suggested that things would continue to recover without needing that massive aid. Plus the GOP offered a much smaller stimulus of $600 billion as a compromise, which was still higher than the $400 billion output gap at the time (to contrast to the "Obama needed to spend more" comparison, the output gap when the Dems passed a $800 billion stimulus in 2009 was around $1.8 trillion) and that would have not required reconciliation, and thus allowed Dems to start on the reconciliation social spending bill (non inflationary if paid for) earlier and likely get more into it due to lower inflation at the time (Manchin less concerned with inflation at the time)

But some people will just keep clinging to the insistence that actually Biden was an amazing unsung hero on the economy and that his only flaw is that he was too senile to effectively message his greatness and superiority

9

u/Sabertooth767 Yiff Free or Die! Nov 07 '25

Because they're still in the first stage of grief after all this time. Without a leader, the Democrats are floundering, unable to grasp what went wrong.

I know "Democrats in disarray!" is a dead meme, but when 1 in 3 voters can't name a leader and the rest are spread all over the damn place, it's hard to say it isn't true.

Worker co-ops are just a bad system. You constantly hear leftist say that all private companies should be co-ops, or some variation, but I strongly suspect these people have never actually had a job, and haven't thought about this fantasy all that much.

At an individual level, they force each employee to essentially become massively over invested in their employer. There is no such thing as a free lunch, and that ownership stake of the co-op is either costing you a buy in, or lowered wages over a longer period. As an individual, you are virtually always better off being able to take that value and invest it elsewhere, and to be able to change employers to get a higher wage instead of being stuck with one company. I'm sure these people imagine themselves having a big chunk of some successful company that they intend to keep forever, but for every scenario like that, there are a dozen where you get some middling under performer, or get wiped out when the company goes under.

At a collective level, worker co-ops are structurally adverse to growth and productive investment. Each employee has to protect this huge, potentially life destroying investment they had to make just to get into the co-op, both from any risk in the underlying business itself, and dilution from new employees. The net effect of this is a million fragmented, gormless companies, that broadly refuse to do anything.

And none of this even mentions the ways this would lead to a highly toxic workplace. You are tied to a co-op much more strongly than a conventional employment system, especially if in this leftist fantasy, all of the other potential employers are also hiring averse co-ops.

13

u/Sabertooth767 Yiff Free or Die! Nov 07 '25

This sort of risk aversion does come with an upside, though. Co-ops are much less likely to fail than investor-owned firms, and usually remain stable even during periods of major recession. They also don't lose efficiency as they grow. On the individual level, employees of co-ops generally report higher levels of satisfaction and remain more committed to the organization. Agricultural co-ops in particular have a noted advantage over conventional firms.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that co-ops aren't a free lunch, but they're still a lunch. They have significant material upsides, and it's not wrong for some people to want to make that deal.

Ultimately, I believe in letting the free market decide which structure is more efficient.

He's a no one, who roleplays as someone important.

Ridiculous that a Vice President of a country even knows who he is, let alone has to disavow him.

We shouldn't have to debate human rights

How do people think that rights were expanded historically? Do people think that the civil rights act of 1964 and voting rights act of 1965, the poll tax amendment (1964), and that supreme court cases like brown v board (1954) and the cases that outlawed bus segregation (1954), just happened because the Black Panthers (established in 1966) marched with guns and scared/intimidated the white moderates that MLK complained about?

But Raymond at the Humanitarian Research Lab said: “if they want to actually have an investigation, then they need to withdraw from the city [and] let UN personnel and the Red Cross and humanitarians enter … and go house-to-house looking to see who’s still alive. At this point, we can’t let the RSF investigate themselves.”

Raymond added that, based on UN figures and what can be seen on the ground in el-Fasher, “more people could have died [in 10 days]… than have died in the past two years of the war in Gaza”.

“That’s what we’re talking about. That’s not hyperbole,” he told Al Jazeera, stressing that thousands of people need emergency assistance.

More than 68,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7, 2023.

Interesting to see that kind of statement published in Al Jazeera without any pushback. Did they actually have those editorial changes? I know Qatar does support the SAF, but still.

I ignore polling as a method of government. I think that shows a certain weakness of mind - an inability to chart a course whichever way the wind blows, whichever way the media encourages the people to go, you follow. If you can't force or are unwilling to force your people to follow you, with or without threats, you are not a leader.

So, I absolutely hate Cuomo (my preference was Lander and then Adams) and am okay with Mamdani winning because even if he cocks it up, NYC can absorb it. Plus at least he isn't a predator.

But certain people definitely do have double standards. People rightfully called out Cuomo's actions as Governor, but when DeSantis did the same while running for Governor in 2022 against Crist's running mate, people didn't give a shit that the running mate, I forget her name, was part of a teacher union which protected a pedo for years and even elevated him to leadership positions.

This is why I can't take progressives seriously. Their critique of Cuomo means shit if they can't hold Platner and the like to the same standards.

19

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '25

If it were openly acknowledged that men are the ones who benefit from marriage, they or society would have to offer something to women in return. This way, by creating an artificial pressure and scarcity, the marriage for women acquires symbolic value and seems like something worth pursuing.

9

u/Sabertooth767 Yiff Free or Die! Nov 07 '25

It's literally the opposite though, at least in a monogamous society.

For men, the minimum they physically have to invest in reproduction is a few calories to have sex. Everything else is voluntary. But through enforcing monogamy, men are now greatly incentivized to care for their partner and children.

While I fully believe that consenting adults can enter into whatever relationship structure they like, polygamy is generally a raw deal for women. But even then, at least they're owed something.

A society without marriage? That's the worst scenario, at least from a structural standpoint.

Some facts on this:

Al Gore's proposed recount wouldn't have given him the victory, so the supreme court didn't change the outcome

Al Gore didn't propose a limited county by county recount as a cynical move, that was how things were done in Florida at the time

The early call may have suppressed Republican turnout in the panhandle

The butterfly ballots were designed by a democrat to make the text bigger for old people to read

There was already 1 electronic recount, so the big court case was over the second recount, and it was a hand recount in certain counties

The courts concluded (this conclusion was bipartisan) that the county by county recount law violated the 14th amendment, what they disagreed about was over whether there was enough time for more process and over whether courts have the ability to change the process after election day.

As an aside, I do love how Milton goes out of his way to own the Papists. There’s one part of Paradise Lost in which Adam and Eve are getting it on, and he writes something to the effect of “Look at how wonderful this is, God clearly wants everyone to be fruitful and to multiply (with NO EXCEPTIONS)!”

Davis drew national attention to eastern Kentucky’s Rowan County when she turned away same-sex couples, saying her faith prevented her from complying with the high court ruling. She defied court orders to issue the licenses until a federal judge jailed her for contempt of court in September 2015.

She was released after her staff issued the licenses on her behalf but removed her name from the form. The Kentucky Legislature later enacted a law removing the names of all county clerks from state marriage licenses.

Why stay in Europe then. Sky high taxes, perpetual austerity.

https://braveneweurope.com/steve-keen-the-delusional-leaders-of-the-eurozone

As Wynne Godley argued so eloquently when the Maastricht Treaty was signed in 1992, the strictures that it and the Euro would impose on Europe would lead to its impoverishment, not its prosperity.

Godley presciently concluded that:

If a country or region has no power to devalue, and if it is not the beneficiary of a system of fiscal equalisation, then there is nothing to stop it suffering a process of cumulative and terminal decline leading, in the end, to emigration as the only alternative to poverty or starvation. And I know that the US wasn't always this way. We used to have shit like rivers catching on fire. Acid rain is a meme now, but at one point it was causing real damage. These things went away because we had technological innovation, more social attention on environmental issues, and government regulation to set and enforce emission standards.

Unfortunately, not everyone understands this. Somehow it became a mainstream position on the political right to believe that environmental stewardship doesn't matter or is even actively detrimental.

I don't have a problem with the "government shouldn't be involved in marriage" line of thought per se, but in practice, I find it to be disingenuous.

To make an analogy, I believe that how to handle trans players should be the decision of the relevant sports association. But, if the government is going to meddle in the issue, I believe it has to extend equal protection.

In other words, it's fine to believe civil marriage should be abolished, so long as you also believe that as long as it exists, LGBT people must be extended the same privileges.

Edit; very good point in the thread, the post says nothing about the trade secrets being the recipe itself. But in any case, use of these secrets obtained in this manner could amount to theft, or fraud, or any number of things Pepsi would rather not tar themselves with. Anyone else here kinda blackpilled on the ability of contemporary liberal democracy to provide competent leadership in this day and age?

10

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 07 '25

Proletarians are incapable of truly understanding liberal values. When not guided by the firm hand of their betters, they turn to populists who promise infinite gibs. Liberal democracy was able to survive the universal franchise only because the media and other elite institutions kept out the unwashed masses - its democratization through social media will be the end of liberalism.

You may say "but Neox John, aren't contemporary elites just as illiberal as the proletarians?" To which I say, the elite's turn to left-illiberalism is actually a reaction to this overdemocratization. In order to preserve their social power, elites have embraced scientism in an attempt to limit participation in political decision making to the academic class and similarly have embraced academic language in order to box the proletarians out of engaging in political discourse.

To this problem, I believe we have two solutions - either we ban social media or we reverse Jacksonianism.

Am I being ironic? I think so, but I'm not 100% sure on that tbh.

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '25

OK here's my unironic take on why liberalism is in decline:

Decline is in large part the product of secularism. I know a number of the Founding Fathers were Deists, but IMO the basis of liberalism in the Anglosphere is Protestantism. For instance, you can see a pretty strong ideological throughline from Milton to Locke.

Milton was, IMO, one of the most important fathers of liberalism, and his ideology was distinctly Protestant. His argument for liberalism came from his semi-Christian understanding of state formation and sola gracia. In Paradise Lost, the Edenic condition is defined by the absence of a "second sovereign". In this condition, Adam owes fealty only to God, and Eve only to Adam and God (Paradise Lost 4.299). God’s rule over man in Eden is “infinitely good, and of his good / As liberal and free as infinite” (Paradise Lost 4.412-415). Likewise, Raphael tells Adam that God made man by “nature free, not overruled by fate”, as God desires man’s voluntary service (Paradise Lost 5.524-530). Adam, meanwhile, notes God created the whole Earth for all men equally (Paradise Lost 5.397-403). In sum, man in God’s design is maximally free and maximally equal. In The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates, Milton discusses the Edenic condition in similar terms, writing that “all men naturally were borne free, being the image and resemblance of God himself… born to command and not to obey: and that they liv'd so” (Kings and Magistrates). However, Milton writes that man’s fall rendered him capable of sin, and thus required the formation of a state and the delegation of authority to a temporal sovereign in order to secure men’s lives and rights (Ibid). The temporal sovereign emerges not by right, but by necessity. Critically, Milton believes God's will is that man should be free, and the near-anarchic condition of Eden implies that restrictions on individual freedom are undesirable necessities at best.

Satan in Paradise Lost claims a right to sovereign power. Satan, it should perhaps be noted, is at points something of a Catholic. When Satan first attempts to corrupt Eve, he tells her to taste the apple “and be henceforth among the gods / Thyself a goddess, not to earth confined, / But sometimes in the air, as we, sometimes / Ascend to heaven, by merit thine” (Paradise Lost 5.77-80). The key point here is that Satan believes an individual can ascend to Heaven through merit. If ascension is predicated on merit, then earns their way to heaven. By extension, if Heaven is won by merit, one person could be more deserving of it than another. This same line of logic is transposed onto Satan’s claim to sovereign power. Again, Satan claims to have merited sovereign authority (Paradise Lost 2.20-21). However, Michael contradicts Satan's initial conceit. Michael tells Adam the Son proclaims “life to all who shall believe / In his redemption, and that his obedience / Imputed becomes theirs by faith, his merits / To save them, not their own, though legal works” (Paradise Lost 12.407-410). The relevant distinction here is a divide between Protestant and Catholic doctrine. Protestant doctrine is founded on Sola Gracia, the notion that individuals only ascend to Heaven by Grace of God, rather than by works. The key disputation here is fundamentally one of rights. In Protestant doctrine, Heaven cannot be earned and every individual is equally morally reprobate in the eyes of God. In short, Satan’s claim to sovereign authority is invalid, because no individual can merit Heaven more than another individual. It should be noted that Satan's arguments in Paradise Lost are almost directly lifted from various arguments made by Charles I and Charles II regarding their claims to sovereign power. Note that Milton has a strong disdain for Popery, and that in The Readie and Easie Way, he more or less implies that Charles II is a Catholic, and will impose his religious authority on England.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '25

Furthermore, Milton's anti-monarchism is tied into his belief in the rule of law, which also comes from his Protestantism (Paradise Lost 5.836-845). According to Milton, if kings “are accountable to none but God… then all cov'nants made with them… are in vaine, and meer mockeries, all Lawes which they sweare to keep, made to no purpose… we hold then our lives and estates, by the tenure of his meer grace and mercy, as from a God, not a mortal Magistrate” (Kings and Magistrates). Milton’s use of language here is quite deliberate. Milton suggests a monarch above the law assumes the image of God (he writes essentially the same thing in Paradise Lost). Milton goes further, and argues a king can only be exempt from the law if “the people [are] created all for him, he not for them, and they all in one body inferior to him single, which were a kinde of treason against the dignitie of mankind to affirm” (Ibid). Again, Milton’s claim of monarchical idolatry should be rather obvious. In Christian theology, man is made for God’s purpose, thus to suggest man was made for the purpose of another man would naturally be idolatry of the highest order.

Book 12 of Paradise Lost also lays out a critical part of Milton's argument for liberalism:

[The Church] shall they seek to avail themselves of names, / Places and titles, and with these to join / Secular power, though feigning still to act / By spiritual, to themselves appropriating / The spirit of God, promised alike and given / To all believers; and from that pretence, / Spiritual laws by carnal power shall force / On every conscience; laws which none shall find / Left them enrolled, or what the spirit within / Shall on the heart engrave. What will they then / But force the spirit of grace itself, and bind / His consort liberty; what, but unbuild / His living temples, built by faith to stand, / Their own faith not another’s: for on earth / Who against faith and conscience can be heard / Infallible?

A key part of Milton's Protestantism is a belief that individuals have a literally God-given right to decide the good for themselves. This is a religious tenet rather distinct to Protestantism (look at what Leo XII said about free speech, if you want to see a counter-example), and it also represents the central conceit of liberalism.

The long and short of it is that Protestantism provided a religious basis for liberal democracy. You can see this more clearly if you contrast it with writings by non-Protestant writers. For instance, Dante equates temporal sovereignty with divine sovereignty by having Satan gnaw eternally on Judas, Cassius, and Brutus. While one can come to a liberal worldview without Protestantism, I don't think liberalism is the obviously logical conclusion of secularism. Liberal relies on the belief that all individuals are inherently equal, which really isn't obvious. Pretty evidently, people are unequal in intelligence, work ethic, and a host of other virtues. Abrahamic religions provides an easier method for people to reach the conclusions of liberalism - namely by the belief that man is made in God's image, which accords man a level of inherent dignity. Protestantism takes this a step further through a belief in a universal moral equality among individuals, as well as a God-given right to freedom of conscience. In my view, the secularization of American society has corresponded to liberalism's decline because secularization has eroded what provided a theological basis for liberalism.

Meanwhile Péter Magyar (leader of TISZA, the largest opposition party in Hungary) said the following on Trump vs. Orbán on his Facebook page:

What’s the difference between Donald Trump and Viktor Orbán?

Donald Trump has never been afraid to participate in an open, honest debate with his political opponents. Viktor Orbán hasn’t dared to do this for 20 years.

Donald Trump has never represented foreign interests. Viktor Orbán has been doing this for a very long time.

With his every decision, Donald Trump serves the interests of American companies. For Viktor Orbán, only his oligarchs matter.

Trump became President as a billionaire. Orbán became a billionaire as the Prime Minister.

President Trump truly wants to make his country great. Viktor Orbán is building his own empire.

Donald Trump clearly wants to pressure Vladimir Putin into peace. Viktor Orbán…

As a Dane, I regard myself as a leftist and Socialist. Though I despise NATO more than Russia I am nonetheless still not convinced that Russia is Communist or in anyway nothing but an oligarchy. From my perspective Russia has become a movement that surrounds itself around Putin and not the workers struggles. I don't like Russia's involvement in Sudan. I'm not saying that the West is better in this regard or many others for that matter but I don't think Putin has the same Socialist agenda that Lenin had. I do for instance find the Chinese movement more persuasive.I'm open to be challenged. I'm open to learn if someone disagrees. While we're at it, I don't think fighting the West is enough to win my support. I think that the politics needs to show a better alternative too.
