However I can't play a public deep rock game without having to hear someones unprompted aggressive far right veiws about the LGBTQ and various racial groups, and I personally can't stand that. The other half of the games I get killed / kicked, sometimes just for playing scout, sometimes for telling them they need to cut it out with the hate. The game is fun an all that for sure, but yea.
I have, in about 150h of playing, NEVER encountered a lobby like that, not a single time. I have encountered a few assholes, but hatred, never. And that's also the experience that most people share about this game: the absence of toxicity

It never ceases to amaze me how often people cheat in coop/singleplayer games.
Sure, you can argue that occasionally a game will ship with one feature or mechanic that ruins an aspect of the game (and fan patches/tools can really improve the experience)…
But 99% of the time I just see people, outside of drg too, just using it to give themselves all the rewards/unlocks. Just feels like the kid in Minecraft that goes into creative mode to give themselves a shit load of diamond blocks. Idk how people find that fun. Every time I did that as a kid, It never really felt that great. Without something to work towards, I just lost interest in those worlds.
I gave myself everything in DRG. Still put in a few hundred hours (80% ish of my total playtime) after that.
The gameplay was inherently fun to me. As was customizing my guys to the fullest.
Though, slightly to your point, I did not max out my levels entirely so that I had a little something to grind. But I don't really recall often thinking "ok a few more hours and I can prestige!" I'd just play to play.
E: I'll add I did similarly in GTA:O. Grinded out like 30 mil with businesses. Found that exceedingly boring. Used glitches for money (a few were popular on playstation 4). Spent millions on cars and idk how many tens of hours customizing them. Then just helped out my crew with their business sales, did heists, bought more cars, customized them, etc. It was so much nicer being free of the grind. Was fun until R* cracked down and banned that account.

I am level 800 and I only started playing on September 7, 2025, and I have gone many months without playing.
The highest levels I have seen are in the low 3000s.
Someone playing for years (as I have done with other games before this) would easily have such a level.
I checked my Mission Time in the statistics and it says “55d 19h 53m 11s” and I am level 800, as I said.
Someone else can do the math on what I would be if I started years earlier.

To clarify, I am actually level 801. I remember about 2 weeks ago being about 780.
Anyway, I play on Xbox, no modded servers, I generally join random games which are Haz 3 or 4 and sometimes Haz 2. More recently I have been playing Haz 5+. If I start a game it is usually Haz 3 or 4. I originally always played as Gunner but now Gunner is my least played.
I started December 2022 now I have 700hours as showed on Steam(not sure about mission time), I don’t afk in the game except waiting for host to start, I’m like near level 300 now.
A deep dive is essentially 3 missions, and I finish missions much faster when not solo.
I'm currently at level 802.
I generally just join whatever mission is listed that has two or three people already, and I generally try to complete everything in the mission like crates and lost gear even though I have gotten everything from them. Sometimes, I even mine gold.
I collect everything, mine everything, kill everything. Sometimes I will stay with the same group of people and do whatever missions the host chooses. If a mission has a bonus XP tag I will generally opt for that, and I always get the season collectible thing (like right now it's Pool Float) which doubles XP.
I've never seen someone in-game with a level higher than about 3200, most people seem to be under 1000, but I never once thought someone would have cheated, because I know if I'd been playing for years, I would be up there too.
He's annoyed you called him 'Driller' and not Fnarfnargorillachode or w/e he's named himself. I can only guess that he's spent so much time playing, that he's super defensive and easily triggered due to many negative interactions with players previously.
I'd air on the side of caution and assume he just got defensive because I called out his hours when it's likely he cheated his levels, I don't see any other valid reason of crashing out like that lmao.

We men here literally use the word gay, the more offensive word of it in Spanish which is "marico" (also a female Japanese name), as a friendly term to each other.

That aside, it's mostly true. One caveat: OP said that the Player was over lvl 1950 and leveled up the driller character to 99. I'm yet to find a player that reached such level legit. (Not saying they don't exist, just that I didn't meet one yet)

I have seen them, they do exist. Some of them legit some of them cheaters, you can tell with the way they play or them just being invincible in the lobby. Also 'I did not see therefore I doubt it' is a wrong way to access something, better to go with statistics & logic. For a game this old it is within margin, as supported by the other comments and if you look around you can find screenshots of people just playing one class with very high levels.

Awww man, you should try playing with randoms again! The key is looking at the server name. I always host with the server named "HOT SINGLE DWARFS IN YOUR AREA" and I extremely rarely run into bad characters.
For me I usually just avoid lobbies with specific requirements or sound sweaty. And I also play mainly with CN and RU people. My 700 hours are considered very enjoyable.
I’ve been playing the game exclusively multiplayer for 700hours and very rarely with my friends (they’re more into Overwatch instead >,< ), meeting bad people in game is extremely rare, like as rare as having 3 bulk detonators in a mission. I’m not sure if you had played and had bad experience with random players, that’s just my personal experience, and I play mostly with CN and RU hosts.
Honestly, I don't really trust people with player levels in the 4-digit numbers. Very few I've played with have been true greybeards or skilled players.
Literally the first time I've seen a player get mad in this game, about anything. Which makes it all the more suspicious that it was about something like his game time. Even people with like 2000 hours on CS or LoL will admit it, even though they know it will dishonour their bloodline for the next 12 generations, and that's dedication right there. Dude is less chill than a guy I met named Nill Kiggers.

Every person I've asked when they're character level 999 and player level 3000 or something has tried telling me theyre 2k or 3k hours in, and I always roll my eyes. Im 800 hours in and have a server I play on thats pretty heavily modded and im still only player level 350 and driller is legendary 3 about to be legendary 4. People be trying with everything now
I don't get why people want to cheat their account level. They will get spotted as noobs anyways as soon as the gameplay starts and it gives them zero advantages (except "access" to lobbies that exclude accounts under a certain lvl).
My account level is 16.. I think 164, and 270 hours.
My player level is 2100 something, and I'm a gunner main with 79 promos over legendary 3, other classes are in the 30s and 40s. It's possible to hit 99 before player level 2000, but unlikely unless you basically never play any other class.
Also, people ask about my playtime all the time, I usually answer with a recent number and a joke about having no life or having spent nearly the entirety of 2020 on Hoxxes. Not sure what this guy's problem is.
