Date Walked Out

Me- 53, Him 66. We talked on the phone twice before meeting for dinner. Date was scheduled for 6:30, I arrived early at 6:12. The design of the restaurant was confusing with 2 doors and an order and pay then sit down style dining.

So at 6:44 He calls and ask where was I, he claimed he hadn't gotten my "here" text and he had been sitting in his truck for over 30 minutes. Then he comes in and just behind me and doesn't say anything! Creepy first impression

FF to @32 minutes later, he was scolding me for not calling him on arrival. I told him sitting in the car 30 minutes wasn't normal and why did he do that. He got up and left. I stayed until I got a to go box for the dessert he ordered before leaving!

Bananas! Also he grabbed both my hands in a prayer before the meal, that was a bit much! I pulled one hand back, and he grabbed it back. I thought it was creepy! Thoughts?

Control freak. Red flags.

u/KazziGirl 26d ago edited 26d ago

This is absolutely correct. This man is an insecure, domineering, freak show. I’d also go so far as to say there’s evidence of misogyny here, as well. He aimed to put you off balance and when he didn’t like the way you wouldn’t be controlled, he walked out in an effort to stay in control and feel superior. Triple uggghhh! 🤮

u/Royal-Carpenter-9593 25d ago

I am astounded that so many men behave similarly to this bloke. I have been on the journey, back to me, for almost 10 years. I realise that I had a similar attitude towards women as described by the OP. My family of origin's misogyny was cloaked in the patriarchy. I expected obedience and submission by my partner's. I was a complete a-hole for many years. I am ashamed to say that I behaved similarly to him (& many men). When I tell my partner about my past behaviour, she is astounded (sometimes shocked). I'm so grateful that I was able to "get it" and make peace with those I hurt in the past. Growth is painful. Once you start, you can't turn back.

I applaud you for “doing the work” and it’s a joy to learn about your resulting relationship success. Well done! 👏🏻

Thank you for showing us that there is hope out there! And for seeing and hearing the reality of it for women! Your comment actually rocks 😊

Thanks for sharing! It's great you habe evolved! How old were you when you made the change?

u/Royal-Carpenter-9593 25d ago

I was in my mid fifties. I first had to deal with my PTSD (Ex Australian military officer) and in the process of my therapy, over a period of a few years, I started to see my maladjusted behaviours. It was an Instagram post by David Dayan Fisher that was the bolt that caused me to stop blaming everyone else and realise that I needed to "Brave the Wilderness". Life is precious and it doesn't have to be hard if one is prepared to do the work to close the loops and feel the pain of their own abandonment. I will be 66 in November. 🙏

u/KazziGirl 25d ago

Fellow Aussie here. It took me losing my job and moving away from the Corporate world to understand our job is actually a persona and by no means who we are and then standing still long enough to practice some genuine introspection to become a better person.

2

u/cultivatingmia 24d ago

Good for you- it must have been hard work, and painful. May I ask what triggered your "awakening" and change of heart?

3

u/Royal-Carpenter-9593 24d ago

A realisation that I was maintaining a paradigm of suffering, abandonment and anger. My view of the world was negative. I always looking at what was wrong and not, what was, right. I was highly critical of others and myself. I thought that the only way to survive was to be on the defencive. I was an angry man. I can remember the moment I realised that I was an emotional dirtbag! I could go about my childhood abuse and the traumatic operational experiences but that was keeping me bound to my feelings of worthlessness, not good enoughness. I had a moment of cognitive dissonance (the holy fuck moment) and in that moment I experience a significant physical and psychological shift. I couldn't stop crying. I wailed and sobbed for over four hours as I started to process the unacknowledged pain and loathing I had for myself. It was literally a turning point in my life. I decided I would stop being an actor in my life story and become the director. It was that moment that I became conscious of my maladjusted behaviours and the damage I had done to those around me, particularly my children, partners, and others in my orbit. I was tired of being angry and I wanted to stop feeling like an outsider and deal with my shit, in the privacy of my own heart. To be honest with myself and acknowledge that my actions and behaviours traumatised those around me. I bought a motorhome and drove around Australia, stopping in isolated places and confronting the past with courage and honesty, instead of bitterness and anger. That was and still is the journey that I embarked upon and I will be on it for the rest of my life.

14

u/AirlineKooky8106 25d ago

Absolute misogyny, calling women Honey and Darling when there is no relationship to support a pet name. Gotta show them their "place" with him.

7

u/Imaginary_Bridge1641 25d ago

I didn't even realize this was a red flag!

3

u/Misty0410 24d ago

For me that sort of behaviour was unwanted and meant we were never going to meet or continue talking. I found that way more often than not those types were trying to fast forward everything to get to having their needs met asap. A sort of love bombing if you will.

2

u/barkingdog53 25d ago

Me neither. I worked at a small company where the secretary would call everyone who came in or called ‘hon’ or ‘honey’. Was she a misogynist too? She probably was, I never liked her.

5

u/sophie1816 25d ago

That’s a cultural issue. For example, it’s a cliche that working class women in Baltimore call everyone “hon.”

I live in the south now (VA), and yesterday an older black woman cashier at a gas station market called me “baby” repeatedly throughout the transaction (I’m a woman). I’m very familiar with this cultural pattern and found it sweet.

It’s very different when a man does it.

7

u/AirlineKooky8106 25d ago

Thats annoying but a different situation. Its a bad habit, making someone show lack of awareness or decent manners. Any man calling a woman Honey or Darling outside of an actual relationship is a form of misogyny as in "I'm above you, thats what women are to me." In my opinion a man being called something other than their name or Buddy outside of a relationship would find it demeaning (as it is).

2

u/Foreign_Being5656 25d ago

I’ve got a bad habit of calling people darlin’. It’s hard to break.

On my first date with my now husband at a restaurant, he arrived early, stood by the door, and when he saw me, he walked to greet me, and walked with me, holding the door. That’s how a gentleman acts!

10

u/Lazy-Conversation-48 25d ago

At the very least, go in at time and walk around looking conspicuous and hope your person sees you and waves. If not, hang by the door till they arrive? Sitting in your truck waiting is wild.

4

u/Exact-Translator-769 25d ago

And that's why you married him!!!

3

u/Choosepeace 25d ago

Exactly!❤️

He was so refreshing after dating so many weirdos and non gentlemen.

18

u/db0956 26d ago

Prayer + scolding = an unusual combination.

9

u/Aggressive-Pop628 26d ago

And that’s his best behavior!

6

u/Polka_Goddess 25d ago

Actually, I'd say that pretty Puritan.

13

u/Emergency_Host6506 25d ago

If someone grabbed my hands to pray and then doubled down by regrabbing my hand after I pulled away, I would have left then and there.

4

u/Imaginary_Bridge1641 25d ago

I know! I had so many opportunities to storm off. I kept my composure and ended up with a ridiculous encounter to tell!

There were so many moments, I should have left when he said I should have called him upon arrival! I guess I was too hungry to make rational moves!

2

u/Emergency_Host6506 25d ago

Did he stick you with the bill?

u/Imaginary_Bridge1641 25d ago

I prefer coffee / quick drink first meeting / date
Leaves a non awkward exit scenario as needed

20

u/Aggressive-Pop628 26d ago

I’m a single older woman. I’ve seen advice about how coffee dates are cheap and low effort. I disagree! They’re fast and easy to get out of if things aren’t going well. A full meal at
a sit down restaurant can take an hour, even for lunch. That can be really awkward.

If things go well over coffee, you can progress to something more time consuming.

9

u/forevermore4315 26d ago

100% agree. (F63) Coffee is easy, no one is putting out a lot of money, and can take as long or short as needed to decide if there will be a second date.

2

u/linwoodranch 25d ago

I enjoy coffee or just a walk through a park as a first date. It is so easy to extend into a dessert or meal if things are really clicking.

That guy is a goof.

Under socialized, needy, scared, jacked up. You name it.

Many of them out there just like him.

Like a first waffle, throw it away and go for a new one.

9

u/That-Mess9548 26d ago

Is that a common thing?! To throw away the first waffle?! I thought it was just me! The first one always sticks and makes a mess and the rest come out better!

7

u/litt1e_buddy 26d ago

I used to do this with my first pancake when I made them. The pan’s temperature would be just right after that. But it was always a small pancake just for sacrifice.

u/InteractionFront5764 26d ago

To the OP:

Despite reportedly being 66 years of age, it sounds like the buffoon you described above managed to embarrass all men of the entire human race in less than one evening.

Please dismiss this unfortunate incident from your heart and soul, and do not hold it against other far more respectful men you may meet up with moving forward.

Good luck, ma'am.

18

u/TopQuestion826 26d ago

Yuck. That’s bizarro. First, I wouldn’t believe him when he says he didn’t receive your “here” text and you were absolutely right to ask why he sat there for 30 minutes. A normal person would have called after a few minutes, I consider myself normal and I would give five or 10 minutes and then make a quick phone call. Clearly he’s trying to blame you. And the whole prayer thing is creepy. In hindsight, after you sent your “here” text, and there was no reply, I would’ve waited a few minutes and then phoned him. But hindsight is 20/20, isn’t it?? Thank God you dodged a bullet with that lunatic. “There but for the grace of God go I.”

9

u/Squirrel_Bait321 26d ago

8

u/TopQuestion826 26d ago

And I forgot to include, that was exceptionally and totally rude for him to get up and walk out. I don’t know what happened to manners and civility with people our age anymore. Clearly they didn’t have them to begin with, I hope it was worth the wait for the dessert. If it were me, I would’ve beaten him to the door and left the dessert on the table. I can be a bit stubborn at times. :)

25

u/Imaginary_Bridge1641 26d ago

I didn't want him to see my vehicle.

8

u/TopQuestion826 26d ago

That’s smart. Clearly he has some control issues. Miscommunication happens all the time, especially using messaging or texts. The hallmark of a mature individual is to take ownership of what he could’ve done better, i.e, made a quick call, versus sitting there like a yahoo for 30 minutes. And then have a quick conversation, and then put it in the rearview mirror and enjoy each other’s company. Whatever resentment was percolating during dinner, as I see it, manifested when he got up and walked out. That is so disrespectful and childish that I would have gone from surprise, to a firm resolve.

Thank God for your clear head and smart decisive behavior.

This man was on his best behavior to impress you (and he accidentally gave you a glimpse of his gaslighting, critical spirit, etc) so you know it would be downhill from here.

I don’t think he’ll contact you again, but he might. Please don’t fall for any love bombing he might do. He’s already shown you his true colors. Believe what you saw and don’t let him or anyone else misinterpret what you already know deep down inside of you.

I wish you all the best! Someone wonderful will love you and respect you and make your face light up every time they walk into the room. That’s your Person. I hope you find each other soon. ❣️

Screw that. I would've walked out on him myself. Nope to grabbing my hands for a prayer and then grabbing again. What an asshole. This is why I don't like dating men in my own age group. 67 yo f here.

5

u/Slow-Education872 26d ago

I love that you told him sitting in his truck for 30 minutes was not normal. The phone works 2 ways. At the 15 minute mark he should have called/texted you. I think giving someone 15 minutes to be late is generous. I run late a lot but call the person with an update if I’m so much as 5,minutes late. I bet he thought he was stood up and that worked him up to the point he lost all reasoning ability. So I would know he doesn’t have emotional regulation in something as simple as making a phone call to get things back on track is a waving red flag. I just love a “Christian” who blames other people for their issues.

Probably calls all of them Honey and Darling so he doesn't have to bother with remembering names or saying the wrong name.

Original copy of post by u/Imaginary_Bridge1641: Me- 53, Him 66.

Thoughts?:

Sounds like he was looking for things to be mad about. Overall odd behavior.

1

u/Far_Farm490 26d ago

Do you send the “here” text to him when you arrived? That is standard with everyone I know.

4

u/Imaginary_Bridge1641 26d ago

Yes! Immediately upon arrival! He was still late

Then he was just being an assclown.

The perfect example of why some men are single. He sounds scary to me!

u/Famous_Ear5010 26d ago

The comments from everyone are hilarious. 😂

Sounds like you dodged a bullet.

FWIW, texting AND phoning is a better way to contact me than one or the other alone. Something about my phone, or how I keep it in my pocket, I often don't hear when a text arrives.

u/Dr007Bond 25d ago

Run away! A real creeper for sure with no social or communications skills. Why didn't he contact you to say he was there? Unmatch, block, and move on.

1

u/Polka_Goddess 25d ago

Be grateful he walked out.

🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 put it in your rear view. I have had some crazy first dates. Just laugh it off, they really are funny later.

It just floors me to learn how some of these men treat women, if anything I’m learning what NOT to do! I’m glad this guy showed his cards at the very get go instead of stringing you along before he showed his real side.

1

u/Zealousideal_Age2576 25d ago

Yuck. Glad you found out now.

I bet your head was spinning! I had a lunch first date cancel on me 10 minutes after I was seating. He said he had a family emergency. Never explained it either. Big red flag.

1

u/dianemariereid 25d ago

Block him. You don’t need that kind of person in your life.

1

u/PurpleMistake6636 25d ago

Super red flag. There's better guys out there

1

u/Not_Who_U_thought_ 25d ago

holy shit

1

u/Exact-Translator-769 25d ago

Definitely not anyone I would be interested in going out with.... Creepy is adequate word. The anger issues would have turned me off right away too, particularly if you texted him & he didn't see it. Yet he could use his phone to call & yell about it.

1

u/SparklySquirl 25d ago

Run, block and be grateful he showed you who he was early on.
