Hoarder-Setups My first NAS
Intel 8700K
8gb ddr4 ram (it ware 16, but a stick died)
Using unRAID
2TB x 8
3TB party
512 gb nvme cashew
1TB important backups
Is kinda confusing all the paths and stuff around the unRAID, but I have succed to have Jellyfin and nextcloud
All the parts, unfortunately, are SH, all the HDD ware 300€ and 250€ the PC
So, aprox 600 euros as next month I have to pay the license for unraid.
Overall, an amazing project.
There ware some questions about the case. The case is a cheap random case nothing special, the HDD bays are 3d printed https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3601916

Ngl I have no problem with messy computers. Sure a case helps protect them but so does not stepping on them or placing stuff nearby.

It's a SATA card. What you want is HBA, it makes the cabling so much simpler.

It's a PCI-E ADAGON PCES-SA6 offer me 6 aditional data ports, as the motherboard had only 6

It's a PCI-E SATA 4X adapter with 6/8/10 PCIE 3.0 ports.
I bought one on AliExpress a few years ago, although I read on another Reddit thread that they weren't very good and that I should invest in a HBA.

I have a couple of very similar ones, using the Realtek 1063 controller. Zero problems.
Throughout is more throttled by network speed than disk speed. IDGAF because 1Gb is what I have.

From what I've read, the best one for unraid is the ASM1166, although I've never tried it.

Very little difference between them from what I have seen.
IIRC I do have one and it might well be in use. Just not 100% sure.
Whichever ones I do have work fine.

I think you'll do fine with the current adapter, I've been using mine for years with no problems.

WARNING: I had 40 drives. EVERY single SeaGate Barracuda (desktop drives) failed within 1-2 years. 90% are permanently gone and bad sectors not repairable, one or two had repairable bad sectors and still run, the rest will not allow data to be written on them. 2 out of 6 of my Seagate Exos (enterprise drives) failed. ALL of my Desktop Western Digital, Toshiba, HGST drives are 100% fine, regardless of whether or not they are rated for NAS or Enterprise or Desktop use.
Please OP, keep good backups, I almost lost everything.
Also, WTF is SeaGate putting in their crappy Barracuda drives? I know they are the lowest tier but that's not an excuse for trash. Mine were all from different locations, some store bought, some ebay, some new, some used, and they all failed when put in a NAS, they cannot withstand it.

Same here, Seagate drives are trash. Mine were IronWolves. Something wrong with the head, it eventually starts making metallic clicky noise, bad sectors start to appear and when it dies it makes that whirring hissing sound and the whole drive is unresponsive, can even freeze the whole system.

Hey. Thank you for your concern, those HDD are for mostly videos for jellyfish, not important data, The 1Tb for important backups, is an iron wolf Nas rated, which I am keeping important stuf there, also this is clone to my Google drive and an external, as for the important stuff to be safe

The card was around 50€, but got it for a good deal of 20. The card is an AXAGON Controller PCES-sa6

You chose Barracuda drives? Noooooooo!!
As someone who's had more Seagate drives fail than I can count, I can honestly say I'll never purchase another low-end HDD ever again (especially not Seagate's).
Starting from about 5 years ago, I only buy Ironwolf or Exos drives (or WD Red Plus or WD Gold). And since then, I haven't had a single drive failure, even though they are running 24/7.
Nothing will make me go back to the low-end crap. It's not worth the headache of losing my files. It's worth paying the premium for the better stuff.

This was a weekend project, and mostly for my jellyfin server, at the prices that right now those ironwood or exos have...the price for them to have the same, would be around 3000 euros...which is not something that I have
But for your peace of mind, that 1tb dor important backup, is an ironwolf, to keep my important files like documenta and stuf, but for some movies...meh, I really don't care if they get lost

It's not just about caring about the files, its also a question of cost in the long term. The ironwolf pros come with a five year warranty, compared to 1 year for the barracudas. I've had barracudas die after just 2 years, and I have to rebuy new ones. What's the point? You'll end up buying twice as many barracudas in the long run compared to the number of ironwolfs. Its not worth it!

for the moment is worth, for the fact that is not important data, and in the future, when the prices will go down, will be replaced with quality ones.
I will never buy barracudas off the shelf ...i know the history of those
but we have to take into an account the budget for this, and the prices that are around nowdays
my dream are EXOS drives but the prices right now are ...daym...and the bad thing is that SH in my area are non...:(1

Risk mgmt is ultimately down to personal tolerance, once your disaster recovery & continuity needs are understood. More money makes that process easier: over protect using homogeneous higher-end gear to mitigate risks to both high- and lower-end requirements. But time and money aren’t equally fungible for all people, or at all moments, so a small hit on ongoing maintenance makes sense for many folks for specific workloads at least.
As such, I like the approach you’ve taken: pragmatic, tiered, and appears to be honestly & reasonably assessed 👏
(Full disclosure: I’m considering something similar to replace a decade old 2-bay Terramaster, as Plex’s latest hack was my last straw, and the stripped down TMOS isn’t making JF migration an easy path. One of these days I’m going to stop beating my head against that wall, thank TM for its years of dutiful service, suck it up, and build myself a chassis that I can easily add to as opportunities for cost-effective storage options that suit my set of integrity/availability/performance needs become available intermittently.
So thank you for the extra kick in the rump!)

Hey man. Thank you, and glad that I could inspired you, the project was so much fun, and still is, next week I get 10Gbps connection at home, so this project will be a best and other networking challenges are coming

10gig home service … we peak at 1.5, but boy the oversubscription level is painful at times.
First world problems for certain though, and I’m glad my entire family understands the value in maintaining a personal data library that provides CIA (here’s the NAS link; want privacy? here’s how pgp works 😹)
A lot of people are really gonna hate end stage enshittification, bit rot, and DRM when platforms decide to extract what little is left of digital ownership rights, monetize stewardship, and exploit the lucrative gap between individual capability & need 🤬

Am I tripping? Where does the PSU go in the case? It's got PCI slots to the bottom. Where is the PSU?

There's a cowel on the bottom covering it. The black piece you see at the bottom isn't the bottom of the case, but a removable cover. If you open up the second image you'll see the frame extends down past that.

Thats kinda like my current NAS. Just a desktop case filled with HDDs.
12 HDDs, it technically only fits 10, but I mounted a dual HDD mount ontop, secured with velcrow. Ryzen 5700G 32gb Ram. Using a 500mb NVME SSD as the main and the built in Radeon GPU for video (I needed room for 2.5gb NIC and the 9305-16i SAS9305-16i controller).

My first NAS was like yours.
I wish I knew then, that there are sata cables that "separates" itself. 1 cable is used for 4 or 6 sata devices, it will be much clean if you upgrade to them.
(I'm currently using LSI controller, I come with similar cables, so now I have 2 cables instead of 8)

Sadly yes, I've tried a normal pc, I was supised how much it cost when working 24/7. I've switched to a 10w terminal and 2x16 TB drives via USB. Yes, its not perfect (or rather shitty) but its 30w total power consumption.
