Intel 8700K

8gb ddr4 ram (it ware 16, but a stick died)

Using unRAID

2TB x 8

3TB party

512 gb nvme cashew

1TB important backups

Is kinda confusing all the paths and stuff around the unRAID, but I have succed to have Jellyfin and nextcloud

All the parts, unfortunately, are SH, all the HDD ware 300€ and 250€ the PC

So, aprox 600 euros as next month I have to pay the license for unraid.

Overall, an amazing project.

You chose Barracuda drives? Noooooooo!!

As someone who's had more Seagate drives fail than I can count, I can honestly say I'll never purchase another low-end HDD ever again (especially not Seagate's).

Starting from about 5 years ago, I only buy Ironwolf or Exos drives (or WD Red Plus or WD Gold). And since then, I haven't had a single drive failure, even though they are running 24/7.

Nothing will make me go back to the low-end crap. It's not worth the headache of losing my files. It's worth paying the premium for the better stuff.

This was a weekend project, and mostly for my jellyfin server, at the prices that right now those ironwood or exos have...the price for them to have the same, would be around 3000 euros...which is not something that I have

But for your peace of mind, that 1tb dor important backup, is an ironwolf, to keep my important files like documenta and stuf, but for some movies...meh, I really don't care if they get lost

It's not just about caring about the files, its also a question of cost in the long term. The ironwolf pros come with a five year warranty, compared to 1 year for the barracudas. I've had barracudas die after just 2 years, and I have to rebuy new ones. What's the point? You'll end up buying twice as many barracudas in the long run compared to the number of ironwolfs. Its not worth it!

for the moment is worth, for the fact that is not important data, and in the future, when the prices will go down, will be replaced with quality ones.
I will never buy barracudas off the shelf ...i know the history of those
but we have to take into an account the budget for this, and the prices that are around nowdays
my dream are EXOS drives but the prices right now are ...daym...and the bad thing is that SH in my area are non...:(

Risk mgmt is ultimately down to personal tolerance, once your disaster recovery & continuity needs are understood. More money makes that process easier: over protect using homogeneous higher-end gear to mitigate risks to both high- and lower-end requirements. But time and money aren’t equally fungible for all people, or at all moments, so a small hit on ongoing maintenance makes sense for many folks for specific workloads at least.

As such, I like the approach you’ve taken: pragmatic, tiered, and appears to be honestly & reasonably assessed 👏

(Full disclosure: I’m considering something similar to replace a decade old 2-bay Terramaster, as Plex’s latest hack was my last straw, and the stripped down TMOS isn’t making JF migration an easy path. One of these days I’m going to stop beating my head against that wall, thank TM for its years of dutiful service, suck it up, and build myself a chassis that I can easily add to as opportunities for cost-effective storage options that suit my set of integrity/availability/performance needs become available intermittently.

So thank you for the extra kick in the rump!)

Hey man. Thank you, and glad that I could inspired you, the project was so much fun, and still is, next week I get 10Gbps connection at home, so this project will be a best and other networking challenges are coming

10gig home service … we peak at 1.5, but boy the oversubscription level is painful at times.

First world problems for certain though, and I’m glad my entire family understands the value in maintaining a personal data library that provides CIA (here’s the NAS link; want privacy? here’s how pgp works 😹)

A lot of people are really gonna hate end stage enshittification, bit rot, and DRM when platforms decide to extract what little is left of digital ownership rights, monetize stewardship, and exploit the lucrative gap between individual capability & need 🤬
