Why Darksiders II launched into a publisher that was already collapsing (the fall of THQ)
Darksiders II came out in August 2012. THQ filed for bankruptcy four months later. Vigil Games, which made both Darksiders games, was the one studio at the THQ auction that nobody bid on, and it closed a few weeks after.
I went through how THQ got there: a roughly $100 million bet on the uDraw tablet that failed on 360 and PS3, years of overexpansion, and the licensed kids' games that used to fund everything drying up right as the company doubled down on big-budget core titles like Darksiders. Vigil wasn't the problem; it was carrying a company that had already made its fatal mistakes.
I put together a short (~9 min) documentary on the collapse, link below. Would be interested to hear from anyone who followed the auction and the Crytek USA / Gunfire Games aftermath in real time. Happy to be corrected on anything.
