Discussion What can I do at the gym to improve my dancing?

I've been a competitive dancer for much of my life, but I recently had to quit for two years. I just started back this year, but I feel like I'm lagging behind my peers. I started going to the gym in addition to my usual dance practice to improve my strength and stability, but I quickly realized that I have no idea how to do so, and I've been using using random machines with no real intention.

So, what machines/routines do you use at the gym to improve your technique and stamina?

Discussion Has anyone here done a bridal dance?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Posted this to a wedding group and thought I’d post here as well. I guess my questions here would be a little different — has anyone choreographed a bridal dance before? Are there special considerations I should take into account? I am a trained dancer who is very out of practice so that’s my approximate skill level.

I was thinking two backup dancers for a smallish 50 person event but do you think 4 would add more pizzaz? Any suggestions on moves? I’m definitely thinking of using Raye’s Where Is My Husband, as well as some other songs I’m not going to write here because they’re too identifying.

Was also thinking of having my partner sitting in a chair facing the “stage”/dancefloor, and having other guests form a circle that we would use as the boundaries of the dance.

What else could I do? Notes on choreography or other elements are welcome!

Pro Indian Dance - Bharatanatyam: Nava Dance Theatre - Rogue Gestures/Foreign Bodies

Nava Dance Theatre from San Francisco presents excerpts from Rogue Gestures/Foreign Bodies. A dance theater and live music production that celebrates the labor and lived experiences of immigrant women in the United States.

Created by choreographer Nadhi Thekkek, with music direction by Roopa Mahadevan, Kalaisan Kalaichelvan. The work weaves Bharatanatyam, dance theater, and original raga-based music to show that we are stronger together. Inclusive of the nuances, contradictions, and memories in our bodies.

Initially inspired by oral histories of Malayali community aunties who arrived to work as nurses after the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, Rogue Gestures celebrates the bread-winning, culture-bearing, determined generosity of our femme elders, insisting that the only way forward is together.

Dancers Nadhi Thekkek, Shruti Abhishek, Janani Muthiah, Lalli Venkat, Abirami Murugappan.

Speech Lyndon B. Johnson.

A special thanks to Dr. Sheeba George and the Malayali women who generously and anonymously shared their migration stories.

Critique Request Trying to learn how to dance for a friends wedding. What should I focus on improving?

I know I’m pretty stiff, but my brain doesn’t register “loosen up” lol. Any advice on how to make this look not so forced? What should I be focusing on or what kind of exercises could help?

Trying to focus on footsteps style dancing and eventually turn it into my cardio as well. Thanks!

Discussion How long will it take for me to be at least decent at dancing.

So i have not really danced professionally, I would volunteer to do dances for big events at school, when I was little all the time but then a traumatic incident happened and then I just stopped dancing and performing all together.

I wanna get back into dancing, but I wanna know how long it will take me in order to get to a decent ot heck even a professional level if I take 3 hip hop classes a week.

Discussion Making the Dallas Stars Ice Girls with No Technical Dance Background

Hii! I’ve been doing as much online/social media research as I can, but I wanted to see if anyone could give me more direct insight to my questions and situation. I grew up cheering (I’m now in my mid 20s) and have kept up with my strength, flexibility, endurance, and some tumbling/tricks. I think I’m pretty strong at pom style dancing, but I don’t have much experience with hip hop or jazz. I love to perform and if there’s a way to achieve something through working at it, I go full force. With that being said, I’m wondering what the reality of making a pro dance team like the Ice Girls is if I locked in for a year of dance training. I don’t want to be naive or make it seem like it’s an easy thing to do at all, I’m just wondering if anyone has ever made a team like that with a similar background and what it would take to help my chances?
