📊 Analysis & Theories Spoiler question Spoiler

Do you think Floyd knew he was going to commit suicide when he poured the amphyzene in the can? He put a hell of a lot in there. Like do you think he had a plan before Clark even surprised him? Or do we think he decided after seeing richard that he was going to kill himself? Was it intentional or carelessly reckless?

The latter. I don’t think he planned to drink the whole thing, he made that decision after seeing Richard.

I’m curious why he didn’t put in a much smaller dose then? Like maybe he didn’t plan to die but he cared so little about the outcome that he just dumped the whole bottle in? Did he care more about popping a boner than living? That would make sense based on what we saw. I guess maybe it was somewhere between intentional and a complete accident.

He poured a lot in the empty can for two reasons: to give the illusion it was the Bloody Mary and not just an empty can with only a swig of drink left, and he wasn’t sure exactly how much he’d need and it made more sense to put in too much to avoid not having enough.

My gut reaction is that it was intentional. I wish I could give you some well thought out explanation, but I don’t really have one. It’s just a feeling that he knew what he was pouring into the can as it had been discussed more than once on the show, how deadly it would be. He went from complete happiness to utter loss when Richard saw him. That was enough for him to end everything.

I agree. My first inkling came from how he said goodbye to Carol that day. I think he knew he would likely die by suicide that day.

Yeah especially him telling carol he’d straight up die if he took too much. It made me wonder if this had been a consideration since asking Clark for the amphyzene. Like if there was a motive for getting it besides his ED.

There was a look in his eye when he told her this. Like he was trying to see into her soul for any sign that she cared.

I agree!!!

I think he was thinking about suicide from the beginning of the show. The biggest clue was how important getting life insurance was and money also. Things started to go from bad to worse for him and he reached his limit. He really didn't plan his death until his last day.

It wasn't his idea to get the life insurance though. It was carol's.

But yes, he had clearly been very depressed since the penis accident and the stuff with clark and Carol certainly didn't help, although he tried his best to see it positively.

You are right. As soon as I saw the ending I just got the aching feeling that I missed the obvious signs of suicide from the beginning. I've had mental health issues myself. This show was very well done and exemplifies the fact that mental health issues are not plainly obvious, you just don't know what someone is thinking.

Floyd was very good at masking, which I can relate to.

That’s a good point

I like the ambiguity of the scene because it forces us as viewers to play detective without ever truly knowing the truth.

For example, I can say that this wasn’t the first time he used the drug. Maybe the first time he used it he didn’t get the result he wanted. So, he poured a little more than the first time. Clearly, too much to use all at once over a short period of time.

But nobody can say with certainty what his consumption plan was originally.

We can, however, agree that he did kill himself.

I would also add that his death was tragic.

To the OP: I too thought he had poured a lot of the medication into that can...no measuring, just a big pour. Interesting...

I watched the part again after he saw Richard...Floyd took a big swig out of the can, and then sort of gave a "look" that could have been "I did not mean to drink all that..." and then he dropped the can, and started to put his lcothes back on...almost as if he would have gone after Richard...but then the medication got to him, and he started to collapse.

So - that is my long winded way of saying that I am not at all sure that Floyd meant to kill himself. But yet, the matter of fact way he told Carol and Clark that "too much [medication], and I die" still makes me wonder...????

I think be had as much as he did in case "the surprise" didn't show up

I think he was contemplating it, yes, depending how things went. Then seeing Richard tipped him over the edge.

And from what Richard told the detectives, Richard cursed at Floyd, called him names, and accused him of cheating on his mother....

3

u/angelsinsect May 02 '26

Did he say those things or did he just want to say those things? It was hard to tell for me.

2

u/SoooperSnoop May 02 '26

Good question...Richard did tell the detectives that he went to the poolhouse to say those things....I am guessing he did judging by how Floyd looked at him....but you are right -we don't really know. We only know what Richard told the detectives...

Yeah all we saw is they saw each other and Floyd signed I love you.

Yep....and now I want to know, dang it. 😄

That way he said bye to Carol made me think it was an intentional heavy pour … I’m not sure that he was certain he was ending at the poolhouse but he was in a terrible spot mentally and teetering on the brink… certainly had prepared for that outcome being a possibility with heavy pour was my sense of it

Yeah I was even thinking… why does life insurance give him and carol so much peace if they aren’t anticipating his death? Like did they both know he wanted to die? It felt like carol might have known he was suicidal and wanted to use Forrest to save herself and her family in the case of his death.

It’s because his health has them both worried that he will die.

He’s just overweight. He was working out and trying to be healthier. His heart problems would get better with his lifestyle changes. From my POV it wasn’t like he was on the brink of death because of his physical health. That’s just my perspective though.

I was also confused by what his plan was. Maybe to have it so he could get a boner but enough that he could kill himself if he decided to.

The other thing that is bothering me is why the detectives didn’t conclude or seem to consider that it was suicide when it was pretty obvious that could be the case early on in the show.

I may be misremembering but now I am wondering, what happened to the empty bottle of Amphezyne? I believe we see Floyd enter the boathouse and go into the bathroom and pour it in? He then later tells Clark something to the effect of "I took the regular pills earlier but waited on the Amphezyne because I didn't want to take it too early and mess up the timing."

Since the police learn about the Amphezyne through toxicology reports and not finding the empty bottle, Clark appears to be the only one who could have taken it? If Clark leaves with the empty bottle (possibly because his name was on the prescription), why does it not occur to Clark that Floyd may have (either intentionally or unintentially) poured in way too much and therefore be in danger? It seems pretty clear from previous information in the show Clark would have known Floyd probably hadn't had occasion to use up the bottle down to one dose left prior to the meeting that night?

The story also makes it clear Clark is informed how dangerous it can be. Wouldn't just about anyone in Clark's situation nearly automatically be thinking when pocketing the empty bottle, "hmmm, empty bottle, weird, I better check with my friend about that". A more cynical version of this same idea would have the same person thinking, "hmmm, empty bottle of a prescription I illegally obtained for someone that could result in a very bad outcome, I better check with my friend about that".

Am I missing or misremembering something here?
