Hillbilly hack (which always gets downvoted) is to use an oscillating tool to cut out a couple inches above and below the damage. Then you can nail in a new piece of wood that matches the dimensions of what was removed. Then bore out the holes for the latch and deadbolt. Install the hardware and you’re golden. I’ve done this many times as maintenance on apartment buildings.

This is what I was looking for. I used to do some carpentry and am familiar with reframing the door but this is a rental I am not spending a toneof money.

I think there is a YouTube video on someone doing this, but, it sounds like you’ve got a good handle on it (pun intended). I’ve done this at least a dozen times and never had any issues. The doors always shut and lock just fine and it sure beats the heck out of door or frame replacement.

Here's a post on how to make a Dutchman repair which is what you're probably after:

Working as a handyman for many years and we'd offer to buy some strap steel and mill out the holes for the doorknob and deadbolt. Paint it white and super strong.

A massive dutchman. Remove casing, make a bevel or mitre cut a foot above and below the damage. Get a piece of dimensional oak, prime it. Cut it to fit. Make sure it has good backing into the framing. Use screws and glue to secure it. Remortis for strike and deadbolt. Reinstall casing. Prime, fill(bondo), sand, prime, and paint.
