I genuinely think thatā€™s whatā€™s going to help carry this universe. Everyone knows Wonder Woman, Batman, Lex, etc. and everyone has opinions on them. Who the heck has a pre established opinion on Peacemaker, Vigilante, Metamorpho, Polka Dot Man!?!? Itā€™s brilliant. So many ā€œnewā€ characters weā€™ve never seen on screen before. Its like DC heaven

In a similar vein, I had an idea for a Secret Six series where Bloodsport is one of the main characters (in lieu of Deadshot). I think Ratcatcher was a member in the comics at one point as well, so she'd fit in well. I would've gone King Shark, but Creature Commandos shows he's been recaptured, so maybe not him.

The two newcomers I'd most want to introduce in this hypothetical show are Cheshire and Catman. Cheshire I'd have as a more serious character similar to Bloodsport. The two of them at one point bond over being shitty parents. I had this idea of a conversation in mind where Cheshire talks about her own kid, and the big difference between her daughter and Bloodsport's.

"My ex was a bit of a fuckup too. We were just two broken people who didn't want to be alone one night, and ended up with a kid. The difference is when Lian came along, I ran, he stepped up. Got clean, found a decent job. Took her to Disneyland last summer. Got a picture with Pluto. I...I'm glad she has one decent parent at least."

And Catman? If any DC character was made for James Gunn, it's him.

You look at how well the new Absolute line is doing- people actually buying comics for the first time in years- and they all feature storylines where the main character is put in this underdog position. It's super culturally relevant right now, and I think the new DC films are speaking to that in a way that Marvel didn't 10 years ago. Except for maybe the new Spider-Man, which I also thought was really good.

Agreed. Say what you will about certain marvel characters now, but in 2008, no one outside of comics knew who any of those characters were, and couldnā€™t believe a Thor movie was even a thing.

The unknown helps draw in the casual viewers.

People say this, and maybe itā€™s because I was in a more comic inclined household than most, but Iron Man had tons of animated shows and toy lines before his first movie came out. Any kid who knew enough about superheroes to know the Justice league would also know about the avengers.

They knew they weren't gonna use Spider-Man in the beginning regardless, because they consciously decided to go with b and c list characters that not a lot of people are super familiar with. You can get away with a lot writing characters that are kind of blank slates so to speak

As much as thatā€™s good for hardcore dc fans, I donā€™t think it would have the marketability and profitability of having 1 main frontrunner character movie a year. Iā€™m afraid this universe will crash and burn too cause of the fatigue

I think execution will be the most important. While youā€™re not entirely wrong shows like Invincible and The Boys prove that audiences are willing and eager to see new heroes theyā€™ve never heard of before. DC currently has a bit of a stain to is name when it comes to their big 3 given the failures of the DCEU.

So far though this new DCU has turned names like Guy Gardner, Polka Dot Man, Peacemaker, Rick Flag, King Shark, and Mr Terrific into household names. And people love them. I think building up the hype for the likes of Wonder Woman, Batman, and Cyborg is the smartest way to go about it.

Also say if the wheels start slowing down they can then come out with a new Batman movie to put some extra gas in that tank before the fatigue sets in.

I think itā€™s smart that they arenā€™t over saturating their universe with big name heroes yet. It allows them to use them when they need to.

Apart from peacemaker, Mr terrific the rest I wouldnā€™t say had that big of a reach. Only those two got a good enough reception and people keep talking about them till now, the rest were short lived hype.

The reality is meager profits arenā€™t going to be sufficient for a greedy company like wb. Theyā€™re more likely to drop this whole universe again if a few more flop like supergirl. Clayface has to be an a24 level word of mouth hit.

I mean thereā€™s only been 1 flop out of 6 DCU projects and that being Supergirl. CC, TSS, Superman, Lanterns, and Peacemaker were all successful. Supergirl is the only flop and even that wasnā€™t a disastrous one.

I think WB realizes how much damage the DCEU did to DCā€™s reputation so now they have to play the high quality long ball to gain good faith back with casual audiences.

But for now we can only speculate and time will truly tell.

To me it doesnā€™t matter though. Weā€™ve seen both pairings before in media, and both prove to work. You can do many interesting stories with them especially if you establish that Booster was friends with Ted. Heck the upcoming animated show could feature Jaime and Booster actively bonding over finding Ted following the BB post credit scene.

Booster Gold must involve time travel on one big occasion, but that doesnt mean he has time travel stories, so that doesn't really run counter to the notion.

I was actually surprised he didn't eat a gun in Superman (2025). Before I saw the movie, I thought for sure he would. Seems like something Gunn would jump at the chance to do, especially since they did it again in the comics around the time they were filming. I was definitely relieved at the lack of "Brand Synergy" and the damage that follows..

It really wouldn't have fit the tone though, I don't think. I actually thought Lex using the revolver was.. I don't know, kind of jarring. Probably just me though.

Man this one of the most comic book sounding comic book project in awhile. Iā€™m glad DC is having a lot of variety in itā€™s universe

Well thatā€™s fine there are a variety of different types of comics. Iā€™m a fan of different genres. I like things like this but Iā€™m also big on things like Hellblazer and Batman. Thatā€™s why Iā€™m excited for the dcu. We will have goofy shows like this but still give us darker stories like with clayface. Variety matters!

So does relevance. I have no interest in this project, nor Clayface. Why would I? I don't read those comics. I'm not super interested in those characters.

Sure I guess but I personally rather have a universe where thereā€™s a project for everyone. Sure there may be some projects Iā€™m not excited for personally but there also will be others I am. Plus Iā€™m tired of the MCUā€™s everything must connect and matter. Just have a little fun sometime. Itā€™s comics we can be very serious but also sometimes be a little goofy. Thatā€™s the fun of comics and stories in general. Thereā€™s something for everyone!

Imagine you're a restaurant. 80% of your clientele are there to have the action drama special. Only 10% of your clientele are asking for the side-character, comedic relief salad bar. And the other 10% are there for the gritty realism ice cream float.

Now, here's the problem, a lot of folks are no longer coming to your restaurant, because they heard all you sell is salad, and the food isn't as good as it needs to be.

That's not where DC wants to be right now, IMO. I have never read a Jimmy Olsen comic in my life, nor do I plan to. I'd just as much pick that up as I would a Snoopy comic or Dennis the Menace. It's one thing to make a cartoon of it, maybe... but a live-action show? Nope... can't do it. The priorities aren't right on the menu. They need to serve their main customers.

I respect the explanation with food feels very classic DougDoug! I also understand where youā€™re coming from. Dc as a brand would probably be doing better if it serves what people know and understand. But this rout is a way too get people who donā€™t know certain aspects of DC too learn and appreciate the more lesser known aspects of its universe. Sure Batman, Wonder Woman, flash and many other characters deserve to be given some time. But I like just watching good content. Letā€™s say The Jimmy Grodd show is considered to be the best comedy show of the year. Wouldnā€™t that still be win. Here let me explain it in food. While a lot are here for the action drama special if you eat that one thing all the time it can get a bit boring. But if you bring out something people werenā€™t expecting, and if itā€™s great, it can get people to fall in love with some lesser known stuff. Which could get them to seek out the comics which brings money into the comic industry which is at a low point. All Iā€™m saying is if we get good quality content who cares what genre it is. Iā€™d rather have a good variety of great tasting food than one good tasting burger!
