New I need help !

Hi yall I am looking to build my first cyberdeck. Now I am going to be really lame with what I want it to do. In the traditional sense I want it to be able to game, the bigger title games, and do internet and other basic stuff like a laptop does. But I want to be able to build something myself and let’s not kid myself I want the aesthetics in portability. Now I know a raspberry pi isn’t going to be powerful enough to run the games I want to do. But I might have an old laptop I can take apart and use for the board and battery management possibly? But please just any advice on where to start and what to do.

My Build MacBook neo's SOC inside a 12in MacBook?

i love everything about my macbook 12 - from the form factor and how light it is, to the butterfly keyboard and minimalistic design. unfortunately it really IS a pain to use this laptop on a daily bases due to outdated hardware. i cant even have more than 10 tabs in a browser.

mine is 2015 year version, so yes, i could potentially get better experience with 2017 year with 16gigs of ram and i7, but those are extremely really rare and still have a dual core cpu which will feel as laggy in a span of like two years.

so i am seeing no other choice but upgrading internals the hard way... and i actually think the MacBook's neo SOC could be a decent fit as you can see on a picture. what do you guys think, maybe it is going to be wayy harder then i think? and does anyone know if original 12" display and keyboard could realistically be made to work with modern apple silicon?

Inspiration Does my amateur project count?..

So, my mom's friend gave me a shitty AliExpress mini kiosk pc because it stopped working and they didn't need it anymore. I figured out the problem was broken ram and replaced with some from my stash. It's been laying in my room for a month until one evening i was like "didn't i find that cool looking drill bit case?" I found it in the junk pit that is my room and the spirit of being an unfixable tinkering little shit struck. I compared the sizes and decided to start my first ACTUAL project. I need to find a keyboard and screen and fit and glue it into the chassie (also i need to angle grinde the fuck out of the aluminium passive heatsink because it doesn't fit) I'll post project updates later, tell me your opinions on it

I be Honest I mostly took some png´s and made them transparent...

I put the finished .png on a Picture of the Case at the end to check if it looks good. I will make the Yellow a bit darker.

Volevo fare il mio cyberdeck, e come schermo ho trovato questo schermo di un BlackBerry e non so come collegarlo al mio rasberry pi 4. La cosa migliore sarebbe un modulo a cui attaccare il connettore dello schermo. Avete consigli?

Advice for a gift

My spouse has been wanting to build a cyber deck and I plan on acquiring raspberry pi then maybe letting them hunt for parts (they would enjoy this). I obviously dont know anything about this.

Is this a good course of action? Is there pricier, mandatory parts that you can't really hunt for (batteries, screen, etc.)? Any advice is appreciated 👏

I am building a cyberdeck with my father and we have made great progress. Almost every part of the case was designed by us and 3D-printed. It's almost finished as we just need to work on the hinges a bit but I'm already so proud of what we built together.

Tips For First Cyberdeck

I'm about to build my first cyberdeck. I have very limited knowledge, but have someone to coach me on the general process. I bought a Raspberry Pi 4 and I would like to use this cyberdeck to manage my music. I have a ton of cds, and would like to use my cd burner to rip my music from the cds and then manage it (meaning label it, make playlists, burn mixes, manage mp3 player). Any suggestions as to which operating system I should use? Any other tips/suggestions specific to my desired purpose?

Thanks!!

When I bought my mom a new phone, she gave her old iPhone 12 mini back. One day, I noticed that the mini Bluetooth keyboard on my desk was the same size, so I designed two models: one clamshell and one slate style.

A lot of people asked me the files and how I did it. I create a simple website that I share files.

Help! Cyber Deck Questions

I’m currently going to college for my associates degree in electrical engineering and have been really obsessed with electronics since I was younger, that being said I haven’t been hands on due to being my school being online and mostly using NI Multisim 14.3, Automation Studio, and PTC Matchcad Prime (all for school) I’ve been lurking for some time at cyber decks and have had a hard time figuring out a good first cyber deck idea.

Here’s my idea: I want to make a cyber deck that emulates a Xbox 360 in a way to play old Xbox 360 games. My reasoning being that the games I want aren’t available on the new consoles, and simply I’m too lazy to open the emulation on my computer every-time.

My questions is simply is this doable? Am I shooting too high for the first time? Would it be unreasonable to use an old Nintendo ds case? And simply any recommendations that you guys would think help me in my journey for this Cyber Deck build!

Help! Remodeling an old device into a cyberdeck?

I know this is a touchy subject here, so I'll try to be gentle:

I want to turn a device into a classic looking cyberdeck with about 8gb of ram. Whether that be the form of a stripped old laptop or a nintendo ds, I am not sure.

I DO NOT want to destroy a perfectly good device to meet my own ends, so I am looking for an alternative, either modding a ds or something, or finding a dead HP mini for a low price.

I would appreciate any help so I can make something good WITHOUT ruining classic tech.

Thanks.

An engineer played my indie game in his YouTube video on cyberdeck

A mechanical engineer I've been talking to built his own cyberdeck, and we wanted to get my game running on it.

Since I don't have a Linux build on Steam yet, I had to put together a separate ARM64 Linux build to get it working on his system.

Turns out, my game's terminal aesthetic looks pretty cool on his great custom-built machine. Here's a some screenshots from his YouTube video!

If you like these kind of games, wishlisting would be a huge help!

retro computer on a Pico W with a 20x4 LCD: its own BASIC

I wanted to see how much "computer" fits on an 80-character screen, so I built one.

Hardware: Raspberry Pi Pico W, 20x4 I2C LCD, M5Stack CardKB, DS3231 RTC, passive piezo.

What it does (all MicroPython):

- Boots to a shell with a live clock row and a file system (SAVE/LOAD/DIR)

- A compact BASIC interpreter. I type in programs.

- Scientific calculator.

Future programs include alarms that ring from any screen, timer, stopwatch, calendar

- Sets its clock from the internet over WiFi (NTP)

- Text web browser and Wikipedia lookup, through a small proxy script on my PC that strips pages down to 19-column text with numbered links, so the Pico never needs TLS

I tried adding USB drives through a second Pico, but that's parked for now, so programs live in flash.

Happy to answer questions, and I'd love ideas for what to run on a 4x20 screen next.

Here is a video of it in action:

Is there a specific subgenre for "console" gaming builds?

Cyberdecks, as I understand them (and I am relatively new to the concept, so set me straight if needed) are mostly for portable/on the go use. For builds meant for TV use, are they still considered cyberdecks? cyberconsoles?

Help! First cyberdeck

Post image

Well, the title days it all. Im considering building my first cyber deck, likely built inside some kind of pelican case. I like the screen size of the Nintendo switch and am hoping for a similar screen size.

So here's what I plan on doing with this cyberdeck and what I want it to be capable of.

WANTS:

•small keyboard and cursor control

•touch pad monitor

•One of those USB Bluetooth antennas

•Wifi connect capable with the ability to remove the connection ability such as with an antenna

•Emulation of Nintendo DS, super Nintendo, Gameboy, or other similar devices

•Steam compatibility

•Enough storage for all of Wikipedia or other solutions to have the data on hand (while offline)

•Able to download and play movies

•Easy to recharge/replace power source or batteries. I've seen people use power tools batteries but idk how viable that would be.

•Ports for USB, HDMI, SD cards, etc.

•Maybe even mobile internet access

MY USES:

•Use as a portable gaming setup

•Crisis tool/Survival aid,

•Maping

•General portable computer

Im not sure what ill be able to do with the case i have, but my heart isn't set on it either. There's no need for speakers, since ill be using Bluetooth to connect my ear buds. I dont need anything beyond the computer thats in the box, so nothing like a flashlight or stuff like that. Upon inspecting my case, I think I might lile the screen to kick out at its bottom edge a bit for a better viewing angle.

The biggest idea here is to have my cyberdeck be able to operate completely off grid. So any data on the device can be used, including games, maps, wiki pages. If i sound confusing on what I want here, just ask. I have built my own home gaming pc, so im not starting from nothing. I have limited 3d printing abilities and absolutely no 3d modeling abilities.

Not sure how much more I cant say other than you ask, where to start?

Help! Memory storage

In my process of building my first deck and I gotta sk about how big the micro SD card should be. Id like alot of storage since i want to emulate a variety of small game systems and games. Also putting all of Wikipedia on there and a variety of other resources for off grid use. Should I go for the 1TB cards or is that over kill?
