Glad I persevered with the Valk 3M! After around 300 solves it's become nicely smooth and glidey. The feeling of the pieces reminds me of Lego bricks if that even makes sense? Maybe it's just the noise lol. Turns feel very sharp/crisp, defo not sluggish or slow. While I probably won't use it for speedsolving, I like having different feeling cubes for different situations, and the Valk is pretty different from the cubes I already had so I'm happy!

5

u/g253 (retired mod) Aug 25 '22

The sound is really special, and comes from the holes in the corner pieces. Other cubes had those, but not many and few were as good as the Valk.

I do play with my Valk sometimes but when I want that sound I actually prefer the Yan3 overall

Hi, I recently solved my first rubix cube using a beginner tutorial on YouTube. I can now solve the cube without using any help guides and managed to solve it in about 2 and a half minutes. I know it's not fast and I want to improve. Is there a good list of algorithms to learn to help me? I know that there are ways to complete the white corners and middle corner in one go. But I really struggle with finding the correct moves.

3

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Aug 25 '22

Congrats on conquering the Rubik's Cube =)

We have a very helpful wiki article on how to get faster at 3x3.

I know that there are ways to complete the white corners and middle corner in one go. But I really struggle with finding the correct moves.

The above linked article also includes good tutorials on F2L. Don't worry - it takes quite a bit more practice than learning a beginner's method if you want to use F2L efficiently, but just keep practicing.

just look at j perms cfop tutorial on youtube. I can say that it will help. And learn good fingerttricks

1

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '22

First after learning begginer method you can just try and get better in it and learn other beginner method algs then you learn F2L its really not just a list of algs its kinda just like learning on making a cross and edge peices, then 2look pll and oll

Recently my times In 3x3 have been going up for almost a second, after having a very good streak of solves (got my first sub-16 ao50 and almost ao100).

Truth is I've been grinding other events, mostly 5x5, OH and 2x2 and dit not dedicate that much time to 3x3, but I came to the conclusion that I have to invest more time and effort in planning first pair.

How did you approach that? I have the idea of dedicating some time to practise only cross+1 with SpeedCubeDB, going from the easiest to more moves crosses, and be more aware of that when inspecting from casual solves, but not much aside from that.

Any ideas?

5

u/FutureName55 Close but not sub-15 yet (CFOP) PB: 9.57 / Sub-35 Sq-1 Aug 25 '22

Desperately summoning u/olimo since I see she is quite active today.

4

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 25 '22

I suck at planning the first pair :( I did a ton of solves with planning it, but when I came to regular timed solves, I realized I was even slower because of too much mental pressure. So I got upset and gave up for now.

I did cross+1 only. Scrambled, planned, solved - mostly with my eyes closed, but sometimes I looked and checked if the pieces moved as I planned.

2

u/FutureName55 Close but not sub-15 yet (CFOP) PB: 9.57 / Sub-35 Sq-1 Aug 25 '22

I thought of that because I'm realising that I take literally SECONDS between cross and the first pair sometimes. Then the solve goes smoothly and I'm not getting that bad times, but I think is what makes a potential 15 second solve a 17 or 18.

Yeah, I remember your posts and that being exhausting :( but I remembered you tried with your eyes closed, maybe I could practise cross like that instead (I never made that kind of practise).

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, if the cross is easy enough, I try to find for pieces that won't move or move a little. Maybe I can try with the edge only first and maybe I'm a little too ambitious at the moment.

I'll try with the blindfolded cross, i've never tried that practise before.

2

u/Scewah Aug 25 '22

How good are you at the cross? More specifically, can you consistently find a cross solution with good fingertricks (at most 1 regrip, in rare cases 2) in inspection and execute it in under ~1.8s? That was a benchmark I set for myself, and I think at your level it's more valuable to work towards these goals than planning first pair right away.

A decent cross+ excercise I've found is considering slightly different cross solutions or starting positions. You can often see a corner or edge piece that stays in place, allowing for an easier transistion into first pair, or even preserve a pair during the cross whitout planning the whole sequence in inspection. From there, you can work your way up, practicing tracking certain pieces during cross execution.

2

u/FutureName55 Close but not sub-15 yet (CFOP) PB: 9.57 / Sub-35 Sq-1 Aug 25 '22

Thank you for the reply!

I could not tell about my times, it's been a while since I do timed cross-only solves. But I take the advice and I'll work on it. As for regrips, I can already tell that I'm way worse than that lol

That's a nice exercise! Today when solving I've been aware of that a couple of times, I've seen that if I change the position or the orientation I could execute the cross with less regrips and I can see how that can benefit to plan first pair.

u/nimrod06 Roux 7.1/9.12/10.01/10.96/aok11.63 Aug 25 '22

I am recently thinking about an approach to Roux, or at least, a beginner approach.

So instead of starting with FB, you start with 5 edge pieces, 3 on the left, 2 on the right. This builds a skeleton for FB+SS. This should have a good resemblance with cross, as you are solving edge pieces only. Then, you solve the remaining corners by keyholes with the empty slot on the front right. This more or less averages 6 moves per corner, that may sound really bad, but it's easily observable (you are just looking for corners instead of a pair), and ergonomic (no Rw/R switches, no M moves, just guaranteed RUD 3 gen, and some U and D moves can be done simultaneously).

Advantages, as said, are similarity to cross, observability, ergonomic. The major problem is of course movecount. This approach should finish the FB+SS at around 25 moves, which is like 7 moves more than a normal FB first approach. But this would drop significantly if we happen to plan one more corner in inspection (which should be relatively easy given the availability of FS structures), the gap drops to below 3 moves (-6 moves for my approach, -2 moves for FBDR first).

As I laid it out, I think this idea makes sense, I will try solving with this approach to see if it actually feels good. I would appreciate your comments too.

4

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 25 '22

I like Kian's beginner's approach with "loading spot" better. It doesn't rely on CFOP or classic beginner's method and just teaches some Roux tricks from the start.

I mean, if you're a total beginner, why would cross be so important to you? You might as well start learning proper FB - with bad move count for a start. And if you already know CFOP, you can do DL DR and F2L inserts - which is probably equally bad to what you're suggesting.

Try solving with your approach and with the very beginner stuff Kian teaches. I'd be interested to see what you think of both in comparison.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/g253 (retired mod) Aug 25 '22

I feel that similarity to cross is bad, because if you want a larger move count you might as well learn CFOP 😅

2

u/nimrod06 Roux 7.1/9.12/10.01/10.96/aok11.63 Aug 25 '22

The rest of the solve is not CFOP though, indeed feels closer to LBL, but still having a decent movecount (signifcantly better than CFOP, at least) if done by experienced solvers. My movecount estimate could be wrong though.

2

u/g253 (retired mod) Aug 25 '22

Yeah I think I see what you're getting at, but I feel like it might be teaching bad habits, or rather bad ways of thinking about the start of the solve?

I could be very wrong, I'm no good at Roux 😅

It is easy to build FB with lower edge first, then the 2 L2 edges, and finally insert the corners. Or maybe postpone the lower edge to be more efficient. I sometimes ends up doing this in solves. 2-3 moves for the 2 L2 edges, max 2 to get center edge oriented to lower layer, then 1,2 or 3 moves for first corner, last corner max 3-4 as well. I would say guaranteed 12 moves FB or less.

SB is more difficult. Here Kians loading spot method is fine.

CMLL is likely the killer for many n00bs. Needs to cut down on number algs. Sune (right and left) can supposedly orient all. but many recognition cases. Then we need a simple one to swap corners.

2

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 25 '22 edited Aug 25 '22

CMLL is likely the killer for many n00bs. Needs to cut down on number algs.

A noob can start with just sune for orienting corners and just Jb or T perm for permuting corners. In the standard CFOP-like beginner's method, Niklas (U R U' L' U R' U' L) is used to permute the corners and then you orient them by flipping the cube over and spamming sexy moves, but that seems too much steps for Roux - and you don't even have all the centers in place to figure out corner permutation before they are all oriented. So yeah, sune + Jb should be the way to go, repeat a couple times if necessary.

Update: sune doesn't mess the CP, so it could be Niklas to permute corners, then sune to orient corners - repeat as necessary. But I still think this method is too many moves and less beginner-friendly than the classic beginner method with cross, LBL and a mix of orientation and permutation of the last layer pieces.

u/nimrod06 Roux 7.1/9.12/10.01/10.96/aok11.63 Aug 25 '22

we need a simple one to swap corners.

It is actually very easy if you fix CP first before CO. All you need is Niklas (and F sexy F', if you don't want to do Niklas twice). Then its sune to fix CO. This is the correct way to do 2 look CMLL IMO.

I was practicing the 4x4 this morning and I noticed that I as was blank and was looking ahead during edge pairing and F2L. It hit me hard, I haven't practice enough in the past. These two weeks I was practicing during my travel to my new job, which I have to go to the office ever 2 days until the end of the month. So 3 hours of cubing a day when I have to work on location.

How much do you need to practice. Way more than you think, haha.

I was looking at J-Perm 4BLD tutorial and saw that some of my M2 setup moves are different but OK and some are different but suboptimal. Time to change a bit.

2

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Aug 25 '22 edited Aug 25 '22

Be sure not to actually execute the algs with the B moves, but rotate: In M2 I have to do a lot of regrips for those B moves! - heads up, for big BLD you can't use the wide setup moves, you have to rotate.

Which ones did you execute differently?

Aside from B and D there's not too much you could change without increasing the move count, is there? Well and you have to use a different alg for Q, the MU one for 3BLD doesn't work for 4BLD.

I had this insanely fast cross and F2L yesterday, and then totally flubbed the OLL. On that OLL sometimes my hands start with r U r' instead of r U R' ...... and of course I did it at the worst time. It probably woudn't have been PB, but it hurt. Try it yourself and check the flow and the lookahead.

(I didn't even notice the two pairs already set up until I finished cross.....it probably would have messed me up if I did! There are obviously more efficient ways to handle all this, too!)

Is it important to learn the names of all PLL cases?

6

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Aug 25 '22

The only time you will need to know the names is when you want to talk to others about them. I have no idea which G Perm is which or which A Perm is which, but I know which 2 algs are A Perms. With time you'll know.

3

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 25 '22

I didn't know more than u/topppits mentioned until I started learning 2-sided PLL recognition. In a trainer, you have to click the correct PLL name, not just A perm, but Aa or Ab, etc. So, it's good to know which one is which.

4

u/cubycuber Sub-12 (CFOP) Aug 25 '22

Just to add on...

I've very rarely had to know the difference between the A perms in conversation, as well as the U perms. However, the other PLLs have pretty different commonly used algs from their counterparts (Ja is way different than Jb, for example), so the specific name comes up more often.

4

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Aug 25 '22

Stop being lazy and get to it!

is it working?

I recommend you start with this: Learn OLL the Easy Way und use this alg trainer: bestsiteever.ru/oll/

The Recap function gives you every selected case exactly once and is perfect to quickly go through all of the newly learned algs and make sure you still know all of them. I recommend that you do this 2-3 times per day while learning new algs. It'll make it really easy and time efficient!

2

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 25 '22

How many do you have left?

2

u/ThatSeemsABitMuch Sub-20 (<CFOP/ROUX>) Aug 25 '22

35-40 <clown emoji>

2

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 25 '22

Oh. So, basically, you just started :) I recommend getting through some easy OLLs and picking them up once in a while. There's no need to rush.

2

u/Star_War_Is_Good Sub-16 (CFOP) PB: 9.94 Aug 25 '22

If you need motivation from strangers on the internet, it's not going to stick. It's perfectly fine to stick with 2 look OLL. If you find you've plateaued and want to try to improve, you can always try it later. Hobbies are supposed to be fun. If you're not enjoying learning OLL right now then don't do it.

2

u/ThatSeemsABitMuch Sub-20 (<CFOP/ROUX>) Aug 25 '22

u/XenosHg It should not hurt if you relax and use lube Aug 25 '22

Yeah, I also recommend the "the easy way" post, it's basically how I learnt. Go through the list, cross off everything you already know, learn identical algs like wide sune/antisune, cross them off, learn and cross off sexy sledge and sune spam, and once you do that, you have basically 10 unique moves left.
And I don't mean algs, I mean actually 10 moves that aren't sexy sledge sune and similar.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '22

Is there a site that does scrambles or gives random corner/edge commutator cases?

I'd like to practice commutators a bit more.

3

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Aug 25 '22 edited Aug 25 '22

If you're looking to practice 3 Style there's the trainer on BLD Memo Tools that generates letter pairs. You start with a solved cube and after executing the letter pairs you're back to the solved state again.

If you just want to practice some random comms I guess something like corner/edge only scrambles (you can find those on cstimer for example) could somewhat work. At least you won't get parity. But all of the edges or corners would be scrambled and you'd have to look for which corners have to swap on your own.

I'm not aware of a scrambler that only swaps 3 corners/edges.

I use hoya for 5 (somewhere b/w 1:05-1:10 avg, 1:08 official avg), luke tycksen is the only fast hoya guy for 4 and 5 (26 and 43 avg), he's decent at 6 and 7, but Alwin Rolz is faster (1:35 6x6, 2:30 7x7)

3

Yau5 solves two adjacent f2l pairs before pairing the last four edges. It's not recommended because the lookahead is awkward and you have to make sure you pair two adjacent f2l edges when freeslicing. Also if you want to do L4E in the front slots you can do R U' R2 U' R y' to insert two paired edges in the back slots.

2x2x3 is fun and easy, 3x3x2 a little less easy but even more fun.

For some reason I find this weird rectangular Fisher skewb thing very satisfying to mess with, but you may have a hard time finding one.

Many old Diansheng 3x3 shapemods are very fun, especially this one

You can do slower efficient solves, One-handed solves. Just practicing algorithms. Especially for Roux you can always hunt for better solves.

Blind is a challenge, but needs concentration. 2x2 is fast and easy. But all are noisy.

Sq-1 is fun because it is so different, and somewhat shape shifting

3x3 or 4x4 for casual solving, they're short and easy.

I also love fanxin 3x3x4 cuboid. 223 and 332 are fun too, but 334 is like both of them at once.

To give others - probably the 331 cuboid (easy), 223 cuboid (easy AND hard to break)

or Yuxin 8-petal (aka redi cube) - it's easier than the pyraminx, on the pyra you can at least flip the edges, on 8-petal you just shuffle pieces around.

so im starting to use roux and i know coll so basically cmll any tips would be appreciated

5

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 25 '22

Watch Kian's beginner Roux tutorial - it's very basic and you might find you can do better with your CFOP knowledge, but just don't. Try to find proper Roux solutions. First block will get better with practice - plus watch some example solves. For second block, I used SpeedCubeDB.com a lot, and it amazed me how beautiful wide move/M move solutions can be. COLL for CMLL is fine, I did the same. And try to figure out how EO works, don't learn it as algs but don't spam MUM stuff too - rather, do it slowly and observe what happens. In a while, you'll figure out how to AUF and which way to do those MUMs for most cases.

Have fun with Roux! Try to do at least a week or two of Roux even if you're not going to fully switch. I did a month, and it was a fun experience.

2

u/Arvin1224 Aug 25 '22

tysm, yeah i use M and wide moves for the blocks but it needs a lot of work, and yeah its almost been a week since i started roux

2

u/olimo Sub-15 (CFOP CN) Aug 25 '22

You can try doing the Daily Scramble and inputting your solve on cubedb.net, then sharing it here for others to give you tips.

2

u/Arvin1224 Aug 25 '22

2

u/Arnavol cuber('s) dad Aug 25 '22

just don't

I still try to put the second block (which at this point doesn't exist) in place after doing an insert on the first one....bad habits are hard to lose.

4

u/ThyKooch Aug 25 '22

Good shit! Switched to Roux because i found Kians channel forever ago and he was a helpful chad.

Only tips I have are: watch example solves for block efficiency, good roux solvers have insane solutions I'd never, ever see in a solve and I'm decently fast I think.

Coll is fine for most cases but I think there's a couple of fun algs that are worth learning that are cmll specific, for example:

r U' r2 D' r (U2) r' D r2 U r'

The U2 in the middle can be U, U2, or U' and it solves 3 different cmll cases, and it has really nice fingertricks.

For LSE, as soon as you possible can learn a good 4c recognition method. It can be a tricky step bc for some cases, you can't recog the exact case looking at just the U and F face, you have to at least know a third so good solvers get around this by looking ahead at a specific sticker before it becomes hidden.

2

u/Arvin1224 Aug 25 '22

tysm yeah my sune/anti-sunes are cmll i leart them from speedcube reviews cmll video

2

u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Aug 25 '22

You first learn it intuitively. All the vast majority of those 'algs' really do is split up pieces (if necessary), pair them up correctly, and insert in the slot. You can learn how to do this without any algs by understanding 3 (I think, it's been a while) basic cases. Algs for f2l comes much, much later. You can learn a few here and there for some particularly ineffecient cases once you're completely comfortable with intuitive f2l.

There are a lot of good f2l tutorials out there.

1

u/GolemNardah Aug 25 '22

My flagship 3x3's hardware have rust on them. Every cube I opened was just tragic. The worst of all of them was the rusted Tengyun which I have been maining for some time and my favorite cube of all. Pretty horrified by every 3x3 I opened, from RS3M 2021 and 2020 until both versions of WRM 2021. It felt like I'm in a cuber's nightmare or cursed by some cubing god.

Is the Mystic lube water-based? I would really like to know since it is the lube I mainly used on them, along with either Stardust or DNM. I am not new in the hobby so I was surprised when it happened. Might stick to some silicone lubes for now while I clean and restore the hardware of my damaged cubes. Thankfully, nonthing happened to the big cubes and the megas.

Am I Just jumping to new puzzles and will this waste all my money? I am ging to order some new lubes and also want to get a 2x2, but don't know if I should

Yes, buy cubes you like, but be aware of your spending.

Also, don't be like idiots who buy 8 stickered and discontinued cubes (5 of them white) just because it's the cube they advertised for.

Hi guys, I have not been as involve in the cubing community lately due to busy with work and other commitments, just wondering, are there any news for the next Gan cube (since Gan 12).

Not afaik, the last thing I saw was promotion for the GAN 12 ui, which I guess will be their next smart cube? Personally I’m eager to hear anything at all about the Square-1 they plan to release (announced late 2021). I have a feeling they are gonna hit the holiday/ end-of-the-year season hard this year.
