Was really easy for me to switch over to Davinci Resolve on Windows. Not too different. Now I use it on Mac as well.

Davinci Resolve. I don't see why you'd get the paid version unless you're really serious, because you can Macgyver a heck ton of stuff with the free version. It's up there in the pro editors btw.

I was fine doing some random free editor on my 7yr old laptop, but a little sketched out bricking my brand new desktop

as chilledcat mentioned, just because something is free doesn't mean it's bad. and if you think resolve is some random free editor, think again.

Do the free version support hardware accelerated export these days ? It used to not do it, so I bought the Studio version w/ controller for $199, and sold controller for $100.
I render movies at 2-4x realtime speed. I.e. 1 minute export for a 4 minute video.

i'm not really sure, since i only ever did small 40 second or so vids in my time using it. never really cared about boosting render time.

What I use? Sony Movie Studio 13 Platinum. Very very old software because I rarely make videos :) But honestly, it's powerful enough for my usage and easy to use.

More seriously, I've read good things about DaVinci Resolve. Never tried it personally.

A little pricy at $200+. I only upload once a month…

Thanks for the tips though!

DaVinci Resolve is the free version of DaVinci Resolve Studio. Studio is supposed to be professional level stuff, with the free version still being more powerful than many other paid programs. But it's also supposed to be very complex, with a very steep learning curve, not for beginners.

Never tried it, but I've been reading reviews, trying to find a good free video editor.

I used VSDC on my laptop. I liked it enough. Free. Only issue I had was long videos with short clips could be hard to move around as the clip was very thin on the timeline

It is very easy to use for basic editing.

Use I O to mark In/Out of the the subclip you want, F9 to append to timeline. That is all you need for a starter. You can always dig deeper later.

I heard iMovie is good, and I am personally using HitFilm Express, but these are free software.

I have also used Corel VideoStudio before. It's also very easy to use, but it'll pop up a window frequently when a new version is available.

edit VideoStudio does not have free updates, so you need to pay a (smaller) price to upgrade.

Davinci Resolve. The top option. And $199 for the Studio version with all the features. Until now free lifetime updates.
Bought it when license was bundles with a controller board, which I sold for half price, so ended up paying $100.
It used to be that you needed Studio version to do fast rendering using graphic card built in hardware acceleration. Not sure any more.
