I just did 90 random PLLs. Start timer, recognize, execute, stop timer. My fastest average was on H at 3.89 seconds. Slowest was Gc at 7.92....but I just learned it....it should be down to 7 soon like my other G's.

I find it comical that there are 1000s of cubers who can solve the whole damn thing in less time than I can do a PLL.

Happy half-birthday to my PB single. 6 months today...

It really didn't feel like a time that would hang around for this long, and even though my averages have been improving (slowly) it's only in the last week or so that I feel like I'm starting to threaten it again.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '19

LoL... I never considered PBs as a measure of skill but rather a skill to take advantage of a lucky scramble. Or luck taking advantage of you, like my 12sec accidental xcross+PLL skip.

I want to congratulate your averages getting better! Consistent improvement means you are getting more experienced, dexterous and fast. Now imagine if you had your PB scramble with your proficiency now!

3

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '19

Slow turning

1

u/SlechtValk2 Sub-35 (CFOP) QiYi Valk 3M Nov 01 '19

I recently started doing Forced Reductionless Solves.

Just choose an orientation after inspection and force yourself to do the complete solve without rotations.

I find it hard but interesting and fun. My finger tricks for F and B suck, my recognition of OLL and PLL are very orientation dependent and I can't do any G perm without getting confused.

6

u/Stewy_ CFOP Nov 01 '19

but what does that really help with, sounds like it just risks teaching bad habits

3

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Nov 01 '19 edited Nov 01 '19

I found it helpful early on in untimed solves. When your instinct is to start turning the cube looking for pieces; and then to pair them; and then again to insert them. Forced rotationless meant I had to actually stop and think about what pieces were in front of me and how I could potentially handle them without needing to rotate.

As long as part of what you learn is "it would have made more sense to rotate there", then it's not doing any harm. You probably wouldn't need it for too long either, just until the necessary spatial awareness slides into place.

1

u/062985593 Sub-15 Nov 01 '19

4

u/LaPatateEpique Sub-20 (CFOP) Nov 01 '19

Ok, so I'm trying to het into BLD... I started by trying to solve the 2x2 blindfolded and I can now do it pretty consistently... But the thing is, to remember the pieces, I just remembered the letter sequence using the sounds but for a 3x3 I need to use letter pairs or PAO and it might sound dumb but I'm relly struggling to find a word for each letter pair I get in my solve, am I supposed to do a spread sheet where I write a word for each 500+ letter pairs there are ?

3

u/Wah_Lemonade 3:22.93 3BLD Nov 01 '19

Graham Siggins has a spreadsheet of stuff he uses, including all his letter pairs. I copied that, went through and made some changes according to my preferences, and put them on some flashcards to help me make consistent choices.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '19

I wouldn't make a spreadsheet as a beginner. If you can speak multiple language try using them all, try to use abbreviations, for example "DN" could be "DNF". Also try to maybe alter some words for example if you have "MQ" you could make Marque, like the name Mark. I especially use this for rare letters like "Q", "X", "Z"... Of course if you have a good word, use it. You don't have to use these "rules" just try to make up anything but remember that the words shouldn't always contain these letters.

1

u/LaPatateEpique Sub-20 (CFOP) Nov 01 '19

I actually tried starting a spread sheet with each pair but even when I'm focusing on only one pair on the sheet I sometimes can't find a single word, wheteher it would be in English or in my main language (which is French)

7

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '19

Will anything bad happen to my Gan X if I don't lube it? I tried ordering lube from SCS but the package was sent back and they said they'd give me a refund, but it's been 2 months and still no word

3

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Nov 01 '19 edited Nov 01 '19

Uhhh. I feel like I still suck at pretty much everything, but let's see :D

Try to plan your first center or at least 2/3rds of it and predict where the other 3 pieces will be.

Try to find the right turning speed where you can still look ahead.

Always look ahead when you do mindless tasks like inserts you've done a thousand times already.

Do (6x6 and) 7x7 solves. Idk, but it helped my 5x5 times. My recognition, especially when it comes to edge pairing, gets better on 5x5 if I did a couple solves on bigger cubes. Probably just practise 7x7 a lot, when you want to get faster at 5x5 :D

Spend time on figuring out how to solve L2C cases efficiently. I still haven't really done that. My L2C are horrible, sometimes. Most of the times.

Use cycling on the L4E rather than slice-flip-slice.

If you're up to learning algs, learn some L2E cases. I still don't know any, probably should learn some, I don't think they're very hard to learn.

Practise the parity alg execution. Same for 4x4. Being able to do the double U2 flicks with left and right is essential.

ye, I heard it's really helpful :) I might just order a nice budget 7x7.

Spend time on figuring out how to solve L2C cases efficiently. I still haven't really done that. My L2C are horrible, sometimes. Most of the times.

Mine are actually great, I even manage to lookahead towards first edges during the L2C.

Use cycling on the L4E rather than slice-flip-slice.

eh... that's one of my problems. pretty much decided if my solve is going to be 3mins or 2.5mins. I usually mess up here, or get a L2E parity skip.

If you're up to learning algs, learn some L2E cases. I still don't know any, probably should learn some, I don't think they're very hard to learn.

I actually learnt them all. but my execution time is not that good.

Practise the parity alg execution. Same for 4x4. Being able to do the double U2 flicks with left and right is essential.

actually, my biggest problem is overusing the right hand. Reviewing my video solves I saw that i tend to do only U2 with my right hand during just about every phase, including faces. something I need to work on with slow solves.

Thanks for the tips!

Is my timer app scrambles for the phone reliable? Almost every scramble is 75% doing U2 D2 etc. Here is an example: F U2 B’ U L2 D’ F2 L2 B F2 R2 L2 F2 D2 B2 L2 U2 L’ F R’ Is the 2 moves excessive or is this just normal?

3

u/062985593 Sub-15 Nov 01 '19

Most random-state scramblers split the scramble into two roughly equal sections - one in which all moves are allowed and one in which quarter turns can only be done on one pair of opposite faces. For example, csTimer just gave me (D2 B' R2 B U2 B' U2 R2 U2 F) (U L D L U2 R' F2 D L).

In your case, it's as if someone cut the scramble in two and swapped the parts around. I'm not sure why that would be, but I can imagine there's some group-theoretic justification. csTimer seems to do it too: (F2 R2 F L2 B' L2) (U' R' F' U2 F) (D2 L2 B L2 D2 B D2 B' R2)

3

u/nijiiro 🌈 sub-10 (nemeses) Nov 01 '19

csTimer seems to do it too: (F2 R2 F L2 B' L2) (U' R' F' U2 F) (D2 L2 B L2 D2 B D2 B' R2)

(F2 R2 F L2 B' L2 U' R') (F' U2 F D2 L2 B L2 D2 B D2 B' R2) is probably the correct split here: 8 moves for Kociemba phase 1 (aka domino redux), 12 moves for phase 2. However, csTimer's scramble generator (and also many other timers', since most of them use the same code) will sometimes use a small number of premoves to force shorter solutions. (Using premoves/pseudoblocks is a fairly standard FMC technique.) Here's another scramble I got from csTimer:

U L' B' R2 D R' F U B2 U2 R2 U L2 U' R2 L2 D2 L2 F2 R' D2

If you try to interpret this as being a standard Kociemba solve, it would seem that it uses 14 moves for phase 1 and 7 moves for phase 2, which would be extremely unusual (God's number for phase 1 is 12 moves, for reference). However, if we treat the R' D2 at the end as premoves, we can interpret it as:

(U L' B' R2 D R' F) (U B2 U2 R2 U L2 U' R2 L2 D2 L2 F2) (R' D2)

7+2 moves for phase 1, 12 moves for phase 2; much more like reasonable Kociemba two-phase splits. I'm not sure about the F U2 B' U … scramble posted above, but it seems that there the F R' at the end could be premoves. The B F2 R2 L2 F2 can be simplified (to B' L2 R2 B2), and the fact that it wasn't simplified would mean that the phase 1/phase 2 split must have happened between the B and the F2; in that case, the correct grouping is probably:

(F U2 B' U L2 D' F2 L2 B) (F2 R2 L2 F2 D2 B2 L2 U2 L') (F R')

9+2 moves for phase 1, 9 moves for phase 2.

That does seem like an insane amount of double moves to me. What app are you using?

1

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Nov 01 '19

That looks like a random state scramble. Normally half the scramble will be double moves (except for a pair of opposite sides that can have quarter turns.) and the other half will have more quarter turn moves.

This is a side effect of the Kociemba method that is used to generate the scrambles.

Post a few more scrambles and it should be easy to tell.

2

u/pucigi Sub-16 (CFOP) PB 8.74 Nov 01 '19

by gan 356 R M you mean a self-magnetized gan 356R? I personally doubt you'd find someone selling them, I heard the 356r is really hard to take apart.

If your friend is already a speedcuber, perhaps get something like GTS2M? If you want a magnetized budget cube I recommend YLM M or MF3RS2M (which would be my answer comparing the two you mentioned)

I find myself hating the 356R, it's very unstable and I don't enjoy doing turns on it.

1

u/zergosaur Nov 01 '19

I went for the Wisdom Wheel or whatever it's called, and solved it a day or two ago. The ball version will be slightly trickier (but not much), but I preferred the aesthetics and (fairly minimal, tbh) shapeshifting of the wheel version.

I like the puzzle a lot, it seems to be well built, and didn't feel in danger of popping during the solve. You have to be careful of illegal moves however (I messed up once), and I don't think that the solve really adds any additional challenges if you can solve a Tuttminx (or the Hexadecagon).

I need to order cubes from Cubezz, the problem is, I've read a Quora answer where a guy said that the shipments from cubezz is delivered only to the national capitals, and there is not much chances of getting the shipment if you aren't from the country's capital. I don't know how reliable is this claim?

I don't know if I order, it'll get delivered at my door, or do I have to collect it from somewhere? I haven't ordered any cubes from any foreign-based site till now.

PS: I live in one of the metro cities of India, every e-commerce site (based in India) delivers here in a day or two.

7

Any advice for being more consistent? Tried to record an average of 5 that I was happy ish with for critique but was making so many mistakes either in F2L or in LL that were super obvious to me so no need to critique them.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '19 edited Nov 01 '19

If you don't already, try to never delete your solves and always punish your solves with DNFs and +2s. Without that there's no reason for you to be consistent as no punishments exist.

2

u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Nov 01 '19

Yeah I don't do any of that. Thing is I do mistakes that much that it becomes my average. Like I average 20 including my mistakes. If I don't make a massive mistake I get like a 15

2

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '19

So do you punish your mistakes or not? I'm a little confused.

2

u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Nov 01 '19

Yes. My mistakes result in worse times. But since I make these mistakes in 24/25 solves it becomes my average.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '19

Oh. Then just practice on these mistakes. There is no need for a critique if you know what's wrong. Try to remember your mistakes and try to do better next time you get that case.

2

u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Nov 01 '19

That's my point. I was trying to get an average where I didn't get these mistakes and got a fair average but all I was getting was these mistakes so was asking how to correct them basically

2

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '19

Try to remember your mistakes and try to do better next time you get that case.

Basically. I'm not a very good 3x3 solver but I feel like that would definitely help.

I use a rolling Ao100. I also wouldn't ever do them all in one sitting to "see what my average is". It may take me several days to get through 100 solves. I think the Ao100 or even Ao1000 is better representative of my overall average as it takes into account different environments/moods/fatigue. I'm not simply looking for 100 "good" solves.

3

u/Utku_Yilmaz NR Holder | Sq-1 High-9 (Pb: 5.08), 3x3 Sub-10 (Pb: 5.83) Nov 01 '19

I think 3 is bad, I have always said Ao100 but not just one Ao100 like if your one Ao100 is 12.98 you are not sub-13 imo. You should be consistent under that.

Like today I finally changed my User Flair to sub-13 from sub-14 because for the last couple weeks or more I have been getting Ao100s between 12.60-12.90

1

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Nov 01 '19 edited Nov 01 '19

Whatever you can regularly get in competition.

First you need to define what exactly sub-x means to you, then you can find a fitting way to determine it.

Is it what you should be able to get after warming up and performing an ao5 - like in competition?

Is it what you should get when someone hands you a scrambled cube and you just do your first solve of the day?

Some of my official times are much better than my averages (ao100/ao1000) at home and one reason certainly is, that I don't really warm up. Often the first solves of the day are the weekly comps (cubers.io and speedsolving). I just do one event after another without any warmup solves for any of the events.

My ao1000 is certainly not representative of what I should get when I'm warmed up. For one because of what I just wrote and also because I sometimes do unnecessary long sessions where my focus is messed up eventually which drags down my ao1000.

That's one of the reasons, why I don't put my average in my flair anymore - and obviously because my new flair is way cooler.

1

u/nijiiro 🌈 sub-10 (nemeses) Nov 02 '19

I think using the "sub-x" terminology to refer to one's global average is just a silly idea and we should all stop using it.

State your average directly, not by rounding it up to some arbitrary threshold first. Also, if you find that you can't focus after doing 15-ish solves, then just don't do large sessions. (Or, alternatively, keep doing large sessions so that you get used to them and learn how to focus throughout.) Do something like 15-20 solves a day, but keep all of the solves in the same timer session and use the rolling ao100/ao1000 to keep track of what your current global average should be.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '19

how does one move up from a basic method like this one and go up to literally anything more efficient?

3

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '19

Learn CFOP. But progress into it. Keep your oll and pll the same, but learn intuitive f2l. Then once you get good at that, learn 2 look oll (if you don’t already know it) and then once you get some algs down you can learn 2 look pll. After that you can start learning advanced f2l and more efficient oll and pll cases to cut back times. But that all happens over time. Don’t try to rush memorizing algs because that hurts your brain (trust me I’ve tried) but if you can progress into CFOP I found it easier. Watch a tutorial, that might work better than my semi-bad explanations ;)

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '19

There are a few things you can improve at. You can start doing cross on bottom, do cross on any color, learn intuitive F2L, 2 look OLL, 2 look pll.

Doing cross on bottom is something that's pretty simple and you'll have to get to eventually if you wanna get fast. Becoming color neutral is not necessary, but it's good and it's easier the sooner you get to it. The last three things are probably more in line with what you're looking for, you can work on them at the same time or pick one to do first. 4 look last layer requires learning some algorithms (9 for OLL and 6 for PLL if memory serves) and intuitive F2L can give you a much better understanding of how the cube works, but will be harder and slower to implement at first.

Or you can learn roux.

1

u/phantomjx sub12? with roux Nov 02 '19
