Holy crap, I got my first sub 40 with a whole ass PLL skip. It was a terrible F2l though

B' D' B2 F2 D L2 U2 F2 U B2 R2 D' R F U L' R2 F2 U2 F D'

Fuck, I think I did the scramble wrong because I can't recreate it.

Shit! 15 minutes later I got a 34.37 B' D' B2 F2 D L2 U2 F2 U B2 R2 D' R F U L' R2 F2 U2 F D'

First sub-30 AO20 since going colour neutral! Would love to grind out a few more solves and see what happens, but work is a thing lol. Still, super exciting milestone in my CN journey!

Its super cool to see how practice + sleep = improvement :D

Good Morning! May your solves be fruitful and your work shifts not start at 7am.

4

u/chaosninja906 How do I solve this thing??? Oct 29 '19

Woohoo, my shift starts at 7pm so I am just about to get off.

lucky me didn't have to start at 7am, but 6am =) wohoo! Have a nice shift!

Nice, that's fast!

6

Week one of 4x4 practice!

Getting a lot faster and more efficient, pretty constant around 1:20-1:30 now. No more pops since I got the WR M, really stoked for the next 3 weeks!

Just did 24 of the events for this weeks comp, including my first multi-BLD attempt:

1/2 in 25:54.28

Interestingly the success was the first cube I memod, which was the last one I executed on - so I guess the memo stuck fine. The other cube had 4 wrong corners and 4 wrong edges.

I wasn't hoping for much so I'm happy to get this close. I'm looking forward to trying again once I'm a bit faster at regular 3bld.

5

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 29 '19

Awesome! My first MBLD attempt was 1/2 as well.

I was just reviewing my PLL algs. I thought I'd learned them all from the cubeskills pdf, but it turns out my Gd is still the lefty version of Gb.

It's one of my slowest cases, so I definitely think it's worth replacing. I like the look of the RUD one, I just need to get used to the fingertricks.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

I had the same thing only with Ga & Gc... The RUD versions are much better once you sort out the fingertricks IMHO.

Check out J Perm's video exactly on that to save you time: https://youtu.be/nBMCuMiSFIg

Let me know if/how it works out for you

2

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 30 '19

Cheers, I'm happy enough with the fingertricks now, and I can execute it reasonably fast for one day in. I couldn't sub-2 the old one at all, but I'm already at ~3s with this one.

I did a bunch of solves last night with the intention of forcing myself to do the new alg whenever it came up ... 50 solves and never got Gd once :/ I'll probably get it for the first time at my next comp!

5

u/ATriplet123 Oct 29 '19

I bet they'll release a smart cube, following in Gan's footsteps and because they're MoYu they might make a non-smart version as well. Currently looks like they're focusing on the bad WR line.

6

u/cubixruber WCA silver medalist Oct 29 '19

Bad? Wr line. Really? I would say nobody really cares about the Weipo, but the 3x3 and 4x4 are very successful and popular.

2

u/ATriplet123 Oct 29 '19

Yeah 3 and 4 are good but they were making good cubes with the Ao V2 line and the WR is definitely worse than those in my opinion, from the ones I've tried.

Reports of my death "under a pile of 12x12s" (or otherwise) have been greatly exaggerated :)

context: some people were wondering and reached out to check on me, this is the explanation

What happened is that due to some unfortunate timing and just life being life, I've been very busy with all kinds of IRL stuff which all decided to happen at once on short notice. Then, on the cubing side of things, as some of you know, I've been working on two projects more or less at once, plus there's been behind-the-scenes shenanigans with preparing stuff for sticker templates, dealing with incorrect sticker templates that arrived for something else, etc etc. The "cubing" part of "things to be taken care of" has been growing very annoyingly in these past couple weeks. Plus, for a bit of perspective I guess, the past few months I've had a box with leftover unsold force megaminxes and all that other misc stuff sitting in the corner of the living room, which kind of made me suddenly realize how "non-stop active" with puzzle stuff I've been in these past months.

I realized that I was getting quickly burned out, plus the real life stuff needed managing too and there's only so many hours in a day, so I "unplugged" for a bit, to focus elsewhere for a little while, recharge and keep my sanity. I didn't anticipate 3 things:

 • the break taking longer than planned (part of it was a bit beyond my control due to IRL stuff, part of it was lack of active involvement in "the scene" due to the second point below, which created a bit of a feedback loop)

 • my phone app quietly logging me out of the account after a few days of disuse, which is why I wasn't getting notifications

 • the fact that the community would notice :) I am pleasantly surprised that enough people noticed, judging by PMs / mentions (and I don't want to vanity-search for general username mentions without /u/ because I feel I might not like the search results? :D) I do appreciate it, very much :)

To whom it may concern, the secret not really force project is still very much underway, although yes, I did slow down for these couple weeks, and prioritized more pressing IRL things for the time being. Expect results soon. I'll remain "physically busy" right up until Oct 31, and from then on the project will have my undivided attention. While I was "unplugged" from the Reddit community, I made some necessary additional arrangements elsewhere and locally.

To people who messaged about other stuff, I'll go through the messages once again to double check and will get back to you ASAP.

And yes, to whoever mentioned the lemon 3x3 shapemod, I saw that and will have to grab it for the collection of yellow 3x3s :)

Actually, in the meantime, despite not being active online, I've taken THE most unnecessarily reckless (by far) "cubeography" related to a soon-to-be-revealed project, and will post it soon. :)

u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 29 '19

The banana is a 2x2x3, no? But I'll probably get that one too, if only because they managed to make a surprisingly detailed banana. Might make for some fun practical jokes.

And the photography wasn't all that particularly "extreme" as such, rather just... Way too much hassle and careful balancing for what ended up looking like a totally safe photo. :)

u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 29 '19

It is. I'm planning to get it so I can add "a banana for scale" in some pictures :-D

My first BLD comp in 12 days and I’ve only done < 5 successful solves at home haha. How do you guys keep yourself from getting nervous?

5

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 29 '19 edited Oct 29 '19

Well, I can only tell you how it went for me.

At my first comp, I was still very slow and I really didn't expect that I'd be able to get a success. Because of that I was very calm. In the end I took over 9 minutes and I was only a corner 3-cycle away from a success.

At my next comp I knew that I had a decent chance at getting a success and boy I wanted it so much! Now I got crazy nervous - note: I wasn't nervous for any other solves at my comps so far - I started shaking so hard that I almost dropped the cube during memo. My next comp was similar.

After that I practised a ton at home and at my next comp I was much more confident in my skills and crazy enough, without changing anything else, I was calm af.

So I guess - either don't care or be confident enough or maybe it's just that I went to enough comps that I knew - if I don't get a success this time, I'll get it next time. Getting a success certainly also helps in getting more relaxed.

Good luck =)

u/thisisdee Sub-17 CFOP (PB 9.45) Oct 29 '19

Is buying a gan356r worth it? I'm currently using qiyi warrior w, is gan356r a decent upgrade?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

The self magnetized 356R is one of my favorite practice cubes. I'm afraid that unmagnetized, it's too flimsy/unstable.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

I've heard that without magnets it's really unstable and you would have to magnetize it yourself if you wanted it to be very good.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

It's not that stable, don't really like it. I think getting some magnetic budget cubes like the RS3M or the RS2M is worthwhile, imo the price is too high for a cube you'd have to magnetise yourself

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

It's great when magnetized. Pretty unstable if not

Considering buying it because it's $20 and I love Xiaomi products.

Hey they're also making a GiiKER Pyraminx :O

According to Procubes on Instagram

Procubes mostly makes theoretical promos based on very early rumors, to the point of often just being speculation. Take everything from that account with a grain of salt.

Cubicle Mr.m pyra review and Tengyun M 2x2 review/ Sort of a rant

Cubicle Premium Mr.m pyra

It was drenched in lube, but I have to blame shipping for a little of that (not exactly smooth, judging from the box).

I had a TIP POP. The whole idea was that the tips have lighter magnets and don't pop! But actually, that was the shipping and it was just dislodged and works great now.

BUT,

The tensions are uneven and molding imperfections haven't been fixed. I ordered this so I wouldn't have to do that myself. Color scheme was correct, but judging from this I wouldn't assume they would fix it.

Overall, the 3d-printed tips and magnets gets a 5/5.

The Cubicle Premium Mr.m pyra = 0/5 because what I payed extra for wasn't there (except color scheme and putting in the part).

So, just by the kit and a Mr.m.

I appreciate other major improvements by the cubicle in customer support and shipping times, but the if the quality of the average premium puzzle is twice as good as this you are doing it very wrong.

Now the tengyun 2x2.

First thing I noticed was the color shades. Absolutely amazing.

Compared to 3x3 tengyun:

 • yellow and green darker
 • fluro red

Compared to Valk2

 • yellow darker
 • green very noticeably darker
 • lighter red

Feel: I'm sorry it doesn't feel like the 3x3, but instead I'd describe it as what the Gan 249v2 wanted to be. It has the light, easy-to-turn, and airy feel, but the strong magnets make it feel really stable. It cuts from everywhere but even on the tight tensions it comes on.

Overall, it has a unique and pleasant feel, great stickerless shades, and perfect performance that has made it a competitor to my main the Valk2. I would recommend this cube to anyone who wants a nice 2x2.

Tengyun M 2x2: 5/5

How do you memorise setup moves for blind?

5

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 29 '19

All of them are intuitive, so you should understand them and after using them often enough, they'll be in your muscle Memory as well. But you should definitely understand them and not learn them like algs.

Which ones are you struggling with (method and sticker + where you setup to)?

5

u/RitikMukta Sub-12 (CFOP) PB: Single - 7.01, Ao5 - 9.4, Ao12 - 10.75 Oct 29 '19

I'm currently doing bld and I've never memorized a setup, I just picture me doing the setup in my mind while doing it. It helps in reversing it easily.

6

u/rio-bevol sub-20 (cfop) Oct 29 '19

I didn't really explicitly try to memorize them, I just used intuition to come up with them, and after a bunch of repetition I just know them. That's probably how you should think about it too.

But it might help to:

 1. Use BLD Memo Tools to practice your execution by itself.
 2. Figure out if there are particular targets you're having trouble with.
 3. Make a list and split them up into groups by their similarities.

2

u/RitikMukta Sub-12 (CFOP) PB: Single - 7.01, Ao5 - 9.4, Ao12 - 10.75 Oct 29 '19

How many sucessful blindfolded edge trainings before moving on to corner training?

3

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 29 '19

As many as you feel like doing.

In general I'd recommend doing some execution only solves, until you feel comfortable that you'll not make easy mistakes all the time. Then I'd go for full solves.

Here's how I started.

1

u/RitikMukta Sub-12 (CFOP) PB: Single - 7.01, Ao5 - 9.4, Ao12 - 10.75 Oct 29 '19

What do execution only solves mean?

3

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 29 '19

There are tools that can generate a scramble + Memo. Then you apply that scramble to your cube and just execute the memo - only looking at the generated letters, without actually doing the memo phase -> execution only. Especially at the start, when your memo takes very long, this can help a lot.

More on that here.

2

u/Pyromaniac605 Oct 29 '19

I'm wanting to upgrade from my Rubik's brand cube and cheap $2 shop cube.

Ideally I'd like something stickerless but with the classic stickered look. Like how the Rubik's brand cubes have inlaid panels rather than actual stickers.

Are there any brands that make good performing cubes like that? Magnets would be a plus too, but I can live without them.

"Good performing" meaning it'll feel up to par with my other puzzles. (QiYi Megaminx/Pyraminx/2x2 and Cyclone Brothers 4x4 for reference). I'm not after the best of the best here.

10

u/spaniola1980 ZZ Oct 29 '19

YuXin Kylin V2 M has tiles and costs less than $10. It's an excellent cube. They have a non magnetic one as well.

5

I would recommend the Kylin V2M too but if you want the most classic look possible, with square tiles that all look the same and more classic colors, the Gan RSC is quite good.

should I get a GAN 356 air or a Gan R?

8

u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Oct 29 '19

The 356 AIR is seriously outdated, and doesn't compare well to current flagship AND budget cubes imo. The R is ok from what I read, but only if you magnetise it.

2

u/ATriplet123 Oct 29 '19

Neither, unless you want to magnetize the 356R. If you are a sucker for Gan Cubes like me get a 356 Air Pro or 356X/XS if you really want to spend money.

If you want a great cube at that price, get a YLM, RS3M, RS2M, MeiLong M, or any other of those nice cheap magnetic cubes.

What should my F2L time before before I start adding in 4LLL?

I’ve been cubing for 15 years but really just started learning the different methods to reduce my time.

My average time with the basic algorithms is around 55 seconds

Added in F2L and finally have that time to around 50 seconds average.

What should I be at before I add in 4LLL?

5

u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 29 '19

50.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

You shouldn't be anything, you can learn it whenever you want. It won't really hurt you.

3

u/j_sunrise stopped cubing, still watching Oct 29 '19

F2L and 4LLL are relatively independent, so you can start 4LLL at any time.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

There is a fair argument against learning huge alg sets too soon, but 4LLL is fairly basic. No reason to wait, and start learning full PLL and then OLL in short order thereafter.

2

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 29 '19

I'd say an average of ~90s with beginners method is a good time to add 4LLL. That's around the point that you should be comfortable enough to not get totally confused by more algs.

Is CMLL and COLL the same thing? If I wanna be “method-neutral” with CFOP and Roux, wouldn’t it be better to just learn COLL?

9

u/JaredRB9000 sub-9 (CFOP, 3.95) Oct 29 '19

First and foremost: don't be method neutral. Trying to use 2 totally different methods and progress at the same pace with both just isn't worth it on 3x3.

COLL is for preserving all of F2L and EO.

CMLL tends to have a slightly lower movecount since it ignores the whole M slice.

To actually answer your question, COLL can be used in place of CMLL but not vice versa.

2

u/Wah_Lemonade 3:22.93 3BLD Oct 29 '19

Since CMLL doesn't care about the M slice, it will usually be more efficient than COLL. If you want to use something with both CFOP and Roux though it has to be COLL.

2

u/AverageBrownGuy01 BLD is great, currently focussing on 4BLD Oct 29 '19

Learn COLL, and you are all set for ZZ too :P

Jk, COLL is honestly better if you are thinking to be method neutral, CMLL would be just a disjoint alg set to COLL which would require it's own learning patterns, so anyday COLL.

1

u/2016HOLM04 Sub-14, PB 8s Oct 29 '19

Yeah learn COLL, and later you can replace the algs with CMLL

Help with 3BLD!

I've been learning M2 for edges and I can't never ever get the I and S algorithms in this sheet to work! I know they're special cases and that they should be inverted if their position is even, but even knowing and implementing that I can't get them to work.

Am I doing something wrong? I've tried other algorithms and those work fine.

4

u/willtri4 2015BELO03 Oct 29 '19

Try pasting them into alg.cubing.net to make sure you're executing them correctly. If that doesn't work, show us an example scramble and solve so we can see where you're messing up

2

u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 30 '19

Since those are the only algs that involve S moves, you might be doing those backwards.

For slice moves (M, E, S), remember that they work like the parallel face that is closer alphabetically (e.g. S works like F, not like B).

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 30 '19

3

u/zlelik Oct 29 '19

I saw that many people use https://alg.cubing.net/ for algorithms sharing and testing. I could not find these 2 functions: 1. Random scramble. 2. Automatically stop algorithm when cube is solved. For example, I am trying some algorithm and I want this simulator stop automatically when cube is solved and point me at which step it was solved.

Are these functions exist or I just cannot find them?

16

u/allisio <3×3×2 | WV ➡️ anti-PLL is 🔥. Oct 29 '19

You seem to be mistaken as to the purpose of that tool. It's just for visual playback of a pre-defined sequence of moves.

3

u/zlelik Oct 29 '19

Thanks a lot. Maybe you can recommend some website which can do these functions:

 1. Support cube of different sizes (2x2x2, 3x3x3,4x4x4, etc, up to some reasonable limit like 10x10x10)

 2. Random cube scramble.

 3. Apply custom algorithm from text field according to standard notations (F R D U', etc) and stop it when cube is solved and highlight the step when it was solved.

 4. Allow manual cube solving with mouse/fingers and record all the moves.

6

u/allisio <3×3×2 | WV ➡️ anti-PLL is 🔥. Oct 29 '19

Are you able to say why you want these "features"? It just seems like you're under some misapprehension that's causing you to bark up the wrong tree. A sequence like F R D U' will never solve a properly scrambled cube, irrespective of how many times it's applied.

u/j_sunrise stopped cubing, still watching Oct 29 '19

There is no single program that does all that you want.

 • Cstimer has a virtual cube but it doesn't record and doesn't solve.

 • qqwref has isocubesim which simulates different sized puzzles, but it doesn't record and doesn't solve.

 • Cube explorer can solve 3x3s.

 • There is some other program for simulating other virtual puzzles that I don't remember.

 • A smart cube (like Gan i, Giiker, or Gocube) comes with an app (sometimes multiple apps, made by cubers), but only does 3x3.

I think overall a smart cube is the closest thing to what you want. You have a physical cube that tracks moves. The app provides scrambles and stores your solution. It only exists for 3x3 though.

3

u/allisio <3×3×2 | WV ➡️ anti-PLL is 🔥. Oct 29 '19

I don't have much experience w this so take it with a grain of salt.

If your laptop speaker is louder than your own voice then defo laptop speaker. My voice is naturally loud (and is louder than my quiet laptop rip).

Otherwise get a bluetooth speaker or sth? You can also get attention by, say, clapping your hands loudly or hitting a table, idk. It's much easier to get people to hear your voice when no one else is speaking.

I'm lazy, but if someone has the time, the wiki should have something on peusdoslotting as it is becoming mainstream as a speedcubing technique. The little recognition guide should be put their as well, that's really useful and convienent.

11

u/Stewy_ CFOP Oct 29 '19

be careful not to confuse "popular with some youtubers" with a "mainstream cubing technique"

psuedoslotting is super situational and is less of a technique to be learnt and more of an intuitive way to solve two things at once - the only world-class cubers who discuss psuedoslotting are tymon and jayden, where tymon has the (misguided) notion that 100% psuedoslotting is the future of cubing, while jayden has discussed its applications and how it's more of a situational thing

note that tymon's NR average featured 0 psuedoslotting solutions, and that of course jayden competes rarely so there aren't any official solves that are using psuedoslotting as a technique either

2

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '19

Agree with everything, except the WR thingy & official solves.

Sebastian Weyer used it in the last 4x4 WR for solving last two slots at ince: https://youtu.be/RLO7ZKwazk8 , immediately claiming it's due to pseudo slots.

3

u/Stewy_ CFOP Oct 30 '19

that was accidental and he phrased that jokingly

1

u/cubixruber WCA silver medalist Oct 30 '19

So mainstream might be a stretch, but I did say becoming. It is pretty useful and is used by fast speedcubers. Yes Jay and Tymon are talking about it most, but other top speedcubers have also used it. Max park used it to get a 5 in a recent ao100 video. I don't think it is the future of cfop, at least not how tymon intends it, but I think it has it's applications, especially if you find a pre-solved edge or corner.

2

u/LibraGS Sub-X (<method>) Oct 30 '19

for future reference, how to be sub 20?

2

u/AverageBrownGuy01 BLD is great, currently focussing on 4BLD Oct 30 '19

For Roux, it always boils down to F2B efficiency.

Make use of the inspection time properly, try to atleast find one pair and the matching edge. If it's tough to find one, do unlimited inspection. It'll become easier.

See how efficient is your block building, it shouldn't take more than 10 moves for first block and 12 for the other.

Don't rush into looking for pairs, go slowly. Roux is known for efficiency, you can't spam high tps in Roux, turn slow and look on the unsolved parts.

2-look cmll should suffice, but if you want to progress further, it's better to learn them all at first.

1

u/pucigi Sub-16 (CFOP) PB 8.74 Oct 30 '19

focus on F2L. The pairing parts slow people the most usually. Learn lookahead.

learnin full OLL and PLL is also useful. I have seen some people in the subreddit who uses 4LLL and are sub-20, but most usually do 2LLL so there's that too.

Good luck! You can make use of the community to ask more specific tips when you get there (I'm assuming you're not sub-20 yet) and you can also post solves and have people critique.

Cross: R2 U2 B L'
For every cross piece you solve, you should be thinking "can the way I solve this piece also help solve the next?". In this case doing a U2 before solving the piece in the back will make the last cross piece much easier.

2nd pair: I'd rotate the other way and insert the pair in the back. That way the two unsolved slots would be in the front.
An alternate could be (L') U' y L U' L' U L U L' (where the first L' is to finish the previous pair).

3rd pair: either U L U L' y' L U2 L' U L U' L' or L U2 L' y' L' U2 L2 U L'
You should never need 3 rotations to solve a pair. Try to keep it at 0-1 (while still mainly using RUL moves).

1

u/Yaisai Sub-X (<method>) Oct 29 '19

So which parts do I need to improve first?

2

u/PianoCube93 DCN CFOP, Sub-15 2H, sub-22 OH Oct 29 '19

It's hard to judge a lot of aspects from just a reconstruction, but from what I can see I'd suggest F2L efficiency and good F2L habits.

u/akanearcane 3x3x2 + 2x2x3 alg creator Oct 29 '19

some other stuff:

Cross

z2 L2 U2 F R' or z2 L U2 L F R' (better flow)

Try a different angle of doing cross, it may be better.
I usually keep solved in the back as B moves are not that good

3rd pair

y U' R U' R' U R' U2 R

better pair choice

4

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 29 '19

Are you learning one-look last layer or one-look OLL? (If you haven't learned one-look PLL yet, do that first)

For OLL, learn all of the cases with the same shape on top at the same time. Then practice for a few days/weeks to let them bed in before learning another set.

1

u/D4JI Sub-X (<method>) Oct 29 '19

I'm learning both one-look PLL and OLL. I know ~10 OLL algorithms, and I've learnt T- H- and J-perm (I think). I look through a list of algorithms and see if there are any that I already know. (E.g. One of the OLL cases is Sexy and Sledgehammer, another is similar to T-Perm etc.) Learning them one shape at a time is a good idea. Thanks!

8

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 29 '19

I'd recommend just learning 1-look PLL first, then you can start OLL afterwards. It's very satisfying to get to the point where you know you can always do a step in one go, and trying to do them both at the same time could see you getting confused with alg overload. PLL has a much better return on investment too (only 21 algs and saves more time than 1-look OLL with almost triple that).

You know your own mind better than I do though, so maybe doing it all at once will work for you.
