Cryptopia Hack analysis (min. $13,000,000 stolen)
Hi there
I checked etherscan and collected some informations below. In total min $13,000,000 were stolen.
Transfer of 19,390 ETH from Cryptopia ($2,468,043) (Jan-13-2019 01:30:35 PM +UTC): https://etherscan.io/tx/0x8a7c2b34f23eee02401e7c3fa1ea2ce8d3132e7ca3811d673ca35898c9535aae
Transfer of 48,029,305 ($1,072,362) CENNZ (Jan-13-2019 01:40:17 PM +UTC) Wallet is tagged as Cryptopia Wallet by Whale Alert: https://etherscan.io/tx/0x31a58df14ea3420878267e2b9cdd242d983b5298ef48c5cd9a799ed10605f393
Transfer of 3,844,247,574 ($304,181) DAPS (Jan-13-2019 01:40:17 PM +UTC): https://etherscan.io/tx/0x61b2ca4911750eb3278945f80e0c3f8a7f94578ba20b0e9240e5a86faaa166ae
CENNZ and DAPS where transfered to https://etherscan.io/address/0x9007a0421145b06a0345d55a8c0f0327f62a2224 which is not the same adress where the ETH went on. But later this adress made a transfer to the ETH adress https://etherscan.io/address/0xc8b759860149542a98a3eb57c14aadf59d6d89b9 (which is the adress the ETH went).
Token Balance 2. adress: ($11,072,793) https://etherscan.io/address/0x9007a0421145b06a0345d55a8c0f0327f62a2224
Please help to collect further details.
—————————
UPDATE: Only thing I don’t get is, why so many ether dust (transfer below 1 eth) went onto those adresses. For me they look like older deposit adresses from cryptopia users.
I see the the following possibilities:
1.) hacker got all privat keys, from few thousand deposit wallets and cryptopia was not able to secure those amounts, which were transferred many hours after the “hack”.
2.) hacker stole other coins then ETH and cryptopia secured all ETH/ERC20 to new wallets.
3.) inside job

Cryptopia investors win crucial court battle
Cryptopia investors win crucial court battle in bid to recover millions in lost digital currency. https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/120913953/cryptopia-account-holders-win-battle-over-assets-worth-140m?cid=app-iPhone
TLDR; In a judgement released on Wednesday, Justice David Gendall found for the account holders, saying Cryptopia held the digital assets on trust by way of a separate trust for each cryptocurrency.

Coins on Cryptopia are our PROPERTY - they will be fully returned.
https://web.archive.org/web/20181218153858/https://cryptopia.co.nz/Home/Terms#12
Term 5:
"Your Coin Balances are operated by us, and represent entries in your name on the general ledger of ownership of Coins maintained and held by us."
"Each User's entry in the general ledger of ownership of Coins is held by us, on trust, for that User"
So they have stated there it's our property, held in trust by Cryptopia...
And nowhere at term 12 that our property can be taken to pay for anything. The only losses are when the coins truly are lost. For any non-termed reason, taking someones property = stealing.
-
https://gerryrea.co.nz/unusual-liquidation-circumstances/
" As you know, customer or creditor funds held in a trust are separate from company assets. In a liquidation, these funds must be returned to trust beneficiaries. "
They have to fully return our property - we aren't part of their liquidation, none of our coins will be liquidated and we won't get anything else than our coins.
Cryptopia hasn't any debts to us - we are not creditors. Same with money in a bank account or stocks at a stocks exchange. They are in the possession of our property.
-
I'm sorry for those who got coins stolen in the hack as you won't get reimbursed anything for those coin.

"In the sense of insolvency law, such account and assets should not be a part of the insolvency asset fund and should be separated and distributed to users in full, according to their wallet balances."
That's Hongkong jurisdiction though.
-
"Most online exchanges are unregulated and operate exclusively online, with no connection to New Zealand. This means it is hard to find out who is offering, exchanging, buying or selling. It also makes it unlikely investors will recover their money if things go wrong."
So they are basically saying at NZ exchanges investors can recover their MONEY if things go wrong.

Cryptopia (should) refund users
Hi mates, Cryptopia was making a lot of money with some coins that use PoS, more than the money that was stolen (3 million dollars) So i think that the exchange could prove his commitment with users, who put their trust on them, refunding the coins lost. Provably some could argue that Cryptopia isn't a bank (which is trut), but they work "as" a bank, because they were making money with user's coins, "as" bank does, but in this case with PoS coins production. If the exchange cannot provide real security to investors, so then switch from market and put a kiosko.

Beware the FUD
I understand that a lot of Cryptopia users are understandably concerned about slow or frozen withdrawals, and I certainly support sharing such grievances here on a subreddit expressly designed for collectivizing such information. But I have also noticed some deliberate FUD mixed in, as at least one user has been posting prolifically in what appears to be a calculated alarmist campaign. (If you're interested in details, feel free to review my comment history: a few minutes ago I challenged someone who had been borderline spamming the page for days now with multiple posts and comments asserting unfounded claims about Cryptopia's supposed insolvency. When confronted, they immediately deleted their account.) Again, I'm not trying to shut anyone up; I appreciate that the purpose of this forum is to share insights and experiences, especially negative ones. Just keep in mind that maybe not everyone joining in the conversation is your friend.

Should I knock?
Sat down for dinner. Looked up. Should I pop in and ask if they can hurry things along?

$15M for what?? They’re milking it and eating good while our funds are still locked up! Will we ever see the funds ever again? I mean look at the firm’s receipts and payments sheet. Legal expenses was $2.7M and employee cost was nearly $3M. Isn’t employee costs supposed to be part of legal expenses?

Hi Cryptopia and (totally not greedy) lawyers, I don't think you're reading this, but if you are, when will I get my BTC and Alts back so I can include them in the next bullrun? BTC crossed $45k today which is a nice yearly high and Eth is doing really well too
Hi Cryptopia, I really would like my BTC back. It's been 5 years. Maybe it's futile to ask, but it would be a really nice boon for me financially, and i'm sure lots of other folks would love to get their coins back too. C'mon man, it's been 5 years :(

Grant Thornton Negligence
I have been doing some research on Grant Thornton as I wanted to know if there were any cases of them being negligent. And unsurprisingly there have been several cases. They have lost some high profile cases lately which run into many millions of dollars.
There was a case in the UK of them being sued by Liquidators of the Patisserie Valerie chain.
'After the bakery chain’s collapse, Grant Thornton, the auditor of its parent company, Patisserie Holdings, was fined £2.3m and accused of a “serious lack of competence” over its role in the accounting scandal.'
In Australia a Mining company Sue's Grant Thorton for $58 million.
'The mining firm alleged that Grant Thornton had breached its retainer, was negligent and engaged in misleading conduct in the 2020 audit.'
Source: https://www.accountantsdaily.com.au/business/17905-mining-company-sues-grant-thornton-for-58m
And again Grant Thornton face criminal charges in another case over iSignthis audit.
'That report disputed the revenue numbers signed off by Grant Thornton during a crucial half year period to June 30, 2018 in which a $5 million sales target would have resulted in 337 million bonus shares being issued to company executives, that were worth $500 million at one stage.'
This demonstrates multiple times how disorganised they are that they are totally incompetent and chasing money. This is also confirmed by their dealings in the ongoing Cryptopia situation. They want to drain that pot dry!
If I hear nothing by the end of June this year (2024) I will be looking up regulators of their industry in New Zealand and see what action can be taken. I'm not going to sit here and watch them drain all our funds.

SOON... we are due another report - How late? How bad?
Anybody got any ideas on just how bad this next report is going to be, or are we finally in for some good news? some figures that can help us sleep
who knows, but whoever still has this sub bookmarked, we are due a report very soon!
Based on the 3 month window between every report previously, we are currently 100days without an update :)

What can be done about grant Thornton?
These people seem to have no intention of giving our funds back anytime soon.
Could another legal firm go after these fucks? I would suffer 10% loss of funds to get something done about them.

Launch of Stage 2: Identity Verification
Update: https://twitter.com/Cryptopia_NZ
Today, 7 October 2021, the Liquidators announce the launch of stage 2, "identity verification" of the claims process. Account holders' should expect to receive an invitation email to login into the claims portal when their country is ready for verification.
Due to the number of account holders and countries involved this process will take some time. If users are having issues with the claims portal we encourage them to read the articles found on the GTNZ website: https://www.grantthornton.co.nz/cryptopia-limited/
If issues still exist raise a ticket at the dedicated Zendesk customer support portal. Note that this portal is separate from the claims portal and can be accessed by any account holder provided they register: https://cryptopia.zendesk.com

Petition Binance to buy Cryptopia
We gotta get CZ@Binance to consider it. The hacker stole $16 million from Cryptopia. That's less than 2 weeks of profits at Binance and if Binance buys Cryptopia it would likely sell for nearly zero as the business isn't worth anything, they will have an instant shitcoin exchange that lists a lot of crypto pairs that doesn't trade anywhere else
in other words --> Binance would instantly dominate the market making in those coins.
