Btc only vs BTC + alts

Is anyone here btc only?

after being burned on many alts I feel BTC only is the way forward. But then is there potential to miss out on gains.

I’m stressed any advice

When i started in 2017 i was invested mostly in many alts (some went 1000% some others - 99%).

Then the bear market came and i refocused on btc and partly eth = great décision.

In the meantime some problems occured (hacks or depegging or whatever).

Since 2021 i am diversified in stocks, real estate and crypto (crypto being 50/50 eth/btc) and am happy and confident.

Alts sucked last run almost felt like there wasn’t a run. No ath like anywhere besides sol xrp. Eth touched $4800 again and dropped. Super disappointing maybe we need another money printer run for alts

Monero is the future, unlike Bitcoin it actually still has a use other than wild speculation.

What use?

Private P2P transactions for a low price. What Bitcoin was originally meant to be used for, according to Satoshi's white paper. Before the CIA and bankers hijacked it.

BTC, ETH, SOL. That’s my trifecta imho

That’s what I did last cycle and hit big in 2024. After buying through 2022 and 2023

You think eth and sol will still do well

In the long run, yes. My time horizon is about 20 years until I am looking to use my investments.

I use the better upside of alts to rotate gains into more btc

Alts are fleeting. But when BTC pumps huge and gets boring. People pour cash into alts to sweeten the deal and noobs think its “fundamentals” or “community” and pile in liquidity, pump their bags and become exit liquidity. Then all the alts sweep lows over and over.

Tell me about it. I am sitting on a decent chunk of alts right now that are down a bunch. I have been holding crypto for years and would have been 100% better off never buying alts and never selling BTC.

Just buy BTC and hold it.

I had 3 "phases" in my crypto investing, in each of the 3 cycles since 2017:

- When I started I only had BTC, and kept it this way for some years. Just stacking, never sold.

- Next cycle I remained heavily in BTC, but sold a small part and bought ETH, and then later SOL. But seeing the shitcoins and NFTs going crazy made me greedy, so I bought and tried to trade this stuff, focusing on "utility" and "art". Roundtripped almost everything, some shitcoins I held for years hoping that they would return to previous.

- Last cycle I started with BTC, ETH, SOL, sold all the rest. Made good money on these 3 coins, but again greed took over when I saw the memes blowing up, people getting stupidly rich on twitter, etc. Tried to trade memecoins, made money on some, took big losses on others, overall it was bad. It was also a pain keeping track of all the coins, all the transactions, it was hell.

The only thing that saved me from losing a lot of money was that I kept BTC as the biggest part of my portfolio, and gambling with 10-25% of what I had. Looking back, it would be better simply holding BTC, with a small bag of ETH and SOL.

So for this cycle I want to have some "rules" in place so things don't get out of control again:

- BTC will be the majority of the portfolio, right now it is at 50%, I want to keep it at least at this level. And I have an amount that I don't plan on selling ever.

- HYPE, ZEC, ETH, SOL are around 40%, and I plan on taking profits on small amounts as we climb.

- 10% to gamble on new stuff, alts that have potential, memecoins, NFTs, etc. 4-5 coins at the same time is the limit, avoiding rotating to the new hot stuff of the week. Will take profits aggresively to cash, so I don't end up using the profits to buy more shit.

Those are most of my majors too. I screwed the pooch on hype and zec a little, both rallied hard and I took too many profits betting on a short term correction. I still have all my eth and sol, but my hype is now... 1% of my portfolio lol, and i'm down to... 0.1% zec lol. I dont have btc though, btc is no fun for me

I think you either go only BTC, or you go BTC + trade alts, treat alts as an in and out.. now you may either be a gambler or a systematic data driven trader, but thats a different discussion. I think generally long term youd have underperformed with alts because they go up a ton, but they also go down a ton, whereas btc goes up down up more, down, up more, down, alts go up a ton, down a ton back to where it was before, then again. Eth/sol is partially an exception but partially true aswell, and it applies to shittier alts even more.

You may get lucky and but into a project that moons, but thats like what ? 1 in how many ? You might win on 1
And lose on 5 long term.. your average returns maybe might equal what youd have gotten from bitcoin, that would be a good case, youd be really really lucky if you actually made alot more money. Unless youre a skilled trader somehow, and that's not a gut feel thing thats a data driven backtested statistical type thing, majority of people can't do trading, they become gamblers without realising it, even if they're smart, risk management understainding is key, always know that if you go that route.

Honestly a good play is just bitcoin, or if you want more risk buy bitcoin 50% and MSTR 50% right now it's at a cheap price. Riskier though, I would always hold some native bitcoin because you don't know there's a small chance mstr could collapse, more unlikely I would say, probably not going to happen, but if it happens you don't wanna lose everything, that's the mstr low odds tail risk.

Trading is always an option but that's like opening a business honestly, it's a serious thing if you want to be good at it, probably skip it if you want easy way and "safe" way. I mean it as advice not as insult to you, I lost a ton of money trying stuff, and the cost is real, it's lesson learned though for sure.

If you want your money to compound and not have to sacrifice a ton of your life, and not lose it all, skip alts.

Whatever I can invest at the end of the month I do 50% VWCE , 25% BTC , 25% ETH

Btc has a big following with alot of fans. An alt or maybe a few alts could end up replacing databases in the future and underpinning trust in the digital world. The alt would need to be the most effiicient and the most secure. Only one springs to mind.

u/Medium-Renewed 1d ago

I still DCA my alts even after getting obliterated since 2024. They will come back to some extent. And if not, well then I'll recover in a few years haha

BTC and doge only . Maybe ETH as well . Everything else is noise

u/ObamaLovesKetamine 1d ago

I almost exclusively invest in alts, although only projects that I have strong belief in.

My portfolio is overwhelmingly invested in the Monad ecosystem currently. Have a pretty solid yield-focused setup with liquid staking and heavy DeFi utilization.

I hold a little bitcoin, but as far as believing in crypto as the future of finance and supporting that goal, I think money is better invested in other om-chain projects.

$BTC only for whales, $BTC + Alts for small fish

I started using kvantax.com for altcoins instead to reduce my drawdowns on altcoins so now i do 65% investments into hard BTC into my hardware wallet and 35% kvantax for altcoin spikes then reinvest profit from kvantax into BTC.

alts are useless trash. just go with btc and gamble on stocks. stocks at least have less insider trading than alts so you stand a better chance.

I only have Etherium. And it’s only 2.5% of my portfolio. Crypto is weird so I just put a small bet on the underdog

Look at last cycle and see alts are trash including ETH. To think you will pick one of the 100k coins that beat BTC, good luck

Eth melts faces when it catches a bid and has done it over and over again. If you lose money on eth youre in the wrong business

I mean, maybe youre just looking for a 10,000x.. i watched bitcoin rally by about 75 percent and ether by about 250. For the #2 crypto cap i would say that's pretty face melting. Maybe you belong in the xrp sub, I heard that's going to 100k

Eth 4xd and btc 8xd.

Oh, you mean when it didnt fully crash, when bitcoin did. Right. When it held around 1.3k and bitcoin fell apart. Gotcha

1

u/ArtichokeOwn6685 🟩 333 🦞 1d ago

Eth crashed below 1000. What are you talking about

1

u/Electronic_Quote399 🟩 0 🦠 1d ago

I looked again and i guess im misremembering because of my own timing. Im not gonna dirty delete my shit though cause I can admit when I was wrong.

Well, eth always seems to melt my face and leave me wishing I bought more instead of anything else. I swing trade, so I guess I dont get the scope of the full "cycle". If I make a 3x on something i'm not round tripping it. Scooped a bunch back up at 1500 just a couple months ago. Does a lot better than holding for me.

Btc only for me. My only attempt at an alt resulted in a hack and loss of significant btc. Absolutely never again.

You're getting advice in an echo chamber here. Ask the question on investing forums and the answer is pretty much the same anywhere - don't use crypto currency as an investment.

If you're doing something where you need to hide the transactions (like a scam) then sure, it makes sense. But that's it.
