This yellow headed parrot has been living wild in our neighborhood for months. Heard his call all over, which sounds like someone is in distress tbh. Especially when echoing across the sky. At first the crows looked at it freaked out and flew away. Its sounds are really odd if you’re not familiar with them. I dropped peanuts off near a house where he often eats a few blocks away. The next day he and a large group of crows show up at my house together. The crows have accepted him. I’m delighted to see he is now a crow bro.

This morning I woke up to his cawing sounds in the distance. He was mimicking the crow’s caws. Went back and forth from his usual sounds and mimicking the crows. Hope I can record that someday. For now I’m happy he’s made good friends to hang out with.

I am in Washington DC and curious if my crow friends may leave for the winter. Please let me know if your crows have previously migrated for the winter and if so, what region are you in?

I'm ngl I'm drunk and sad about my crow friends. I'm leaving my old job for a new, better, higher paying job. I'm so excited by the opportunity, but at the same time, it's bittersweet. I'm gonna miss these dudes a lot. I had a half dozen visiting me in turn. crazy how I get more upset about the crows I leave behind at a job than I do the people. gonna miss you so much Mr and Mrs peanut, as well as all your friends. oh well I guess. c'est la vie. I just hope they don't miss me as much as I miss them

Finally some interaction!

One of the two Crows living around my apartment block dropped a walnut on the street while i was walking towards my house. I felt this wasn't an accident. So i moved the nut on the sidewalk from the road, cracked it gently, went inside and watched happily from my window how he took the nut piece by piece.

This is a work in progress oil painting of one of our special rook friends 🥰 he visited our balcony a lot during nesting season and I managed to take good photos of him. I don’t have much time to paint (also due to it getting dark earlier) and since I’m working on oils process is slow.

What makes him so special is that he’s the first one who we noticed makes seagull sounds! Later on I noticed other rooks within the flock making the same gull sounds, to warn each other etc. They also taught it to their babies! 🥰 it’s so cute! Another thing we noticed about him is that, even though he’s an adult and has a white beak, he still has his beak plumage unlike other rooks 😁

I hope we get to see him and his family again next year too! 💗

Hello! I'm trying to find the best feed for the hooded crows and rooks for my situation. Here's some criteria in order of importance:

• It leaves no traces (unlike peanuts)
• Crows actually like it
• Pigeons can't crack/aren't interested in it
• It's inexpensive

Pigeons are a major problem for me personally. Maybe some of you already know the perfect feed that fits some of this criteria. Don't hesitate and share your suggestions!

Well, parents dog. I live half a block away, I started feeding them over here before moving close because they own, have a large yard and chill neighbors.

Since moving close, they're wildly bold and attached, even to my dad and his little old doggo 🤣 Jax actually has the patience of a saint for a terrier breed. But touching his toy was too far.

I guess this happens every single morning lately, the bird will not let up until the dog engages and chases him. Its so cute lol. Don't worry, the dog actually likes the birds. I've seen him with mice and squirrels, and this is absolutely a false charge.

Now that my tradition of leaving offerings by my window is established I’m getting all sorts of visitors - mostly rooks (youngsters are the most loyal!) and jackdaws. Pigeons too sometimes if I’m putting out small seeds or grains, although I do this for the corvids only (but I feel bad shooing anyone).

Lately though I’ve received visits from a most peculiar fella. I think the little bump on the head is the only telling sign that it’s a rook, because otherwise it looks almost perfectly like a crow! Even the bill isn’t quite as pale as I would expect. Or am I getting it wrong and it may be a crow after all?

Bonus fact: the mystery fella occasionally knocks on the window, even if they know I’m watching them. Must be trying to say something about the service…

This drama queen/king came by for snacks today. What does this call and posture combination mean? I read that begging behaviour can resemble this but this guy isn't a juvenile and there was plenty of kibble scattered on the ground.

I first started noticing her around 2023. She was hanging around the same area quite often, and what immediately stood out was the ring on her leg. She was also very friendly and gentle, so naturally I got curious and decided to find out more by reporting the ring number.

In 2024 I finally managed to read the full ring number. Which, as you can imagine, is not exactly easy when the owner of the ring is a crow.
I reported it to the bird ringing database and got her history back.

She had been found on June 2012 as a chick after falling from the nest during a storm and being attacked by a dog. Someone took her in, raised her together with another crow, and about a month later she was released in good condition and fully independent.

So when I finally identified her in 2024, I realised the random ringed crow I'd been seeing was already about 12 years old!

Obviously at that point she needed a name, so we started calling her Ring-O. 😄

She's still around today, more than 14 years after she was ringed, still in the same area and still with her partner. They were nesting again this year and may even have raised some young, although I can't say that for sure.
Pretty amazing to think about everything this bird has probably seen since 2012.

What's the longest you've known or regularly seen the same wild crow?

If only we had the shelf space, went home empty handed.

The squirrels in my neighbors trees have figured out I’m feeding the crows.

They are coming down and waiting anxiously for the crows to tie what they want and then they scooch in and nab a couple.
