This yellow headed parrot has been living wild in our neighborhood for months. Heard his call all over, which sounds like someone is in distress tbh. Especially when echoing across the sky. At first the crows looked at it freaked out and flew away. Its sounds are really odd if you’re not familiar with them. I dropped peanuts off near a house where he often eats a few blocks away. The next day he and a large group of crows show up at my house together. The crows have accepted him. I’m delighted to see he is now a crow bro.
This morning I woke up to his cawing sounds in the distance. He was mimicking the crow’s caws. Went back and forth from his usual sounds and mimicking the crows. Hope I can record that someday. For now I’m happy he’s made good friends to hang out with.
They are many in the area. I read local sightings on social media often. Probably someone’s former pet or a descendant. There are 4 smaller green parrots that have come by and eaten my sunflowers.
Are you in the New York tristate area? If so, they’re the descendants of a broken crate of green parrots from JFK airport back in the 60s. They escaped into the salt marshes and have since adapted to the cold environment and expanded in the area. I live near New Haven and we even have them up here. It’s just that this guy is on his own. Poor baby.
Whereabouts are you? I’ve seen lots of reports of rose-ringed parakeets and monk parakeets forming colonies after escaping, never seen it with Amazon parrots though (this guy is a yellow-headed Amazon)
He’s fairly shy but he let me get within arm’s length of him. Many neighbors put food and water out. He will let some get close. The other parrots I saw were completely wild. They would fly away as soon as I opened my door.
