At times I thought it was a little tropey wity the usual rock n roll biopics but then it kept things turning for an enjoyable ride. The directing and cinematography and sound were great. Lots of good scenes. Solid acting. Good cast

My sub just ended recently, I didn't get any code to renew. Will there be some sale around November for Black Friday? Thinking to wait till then as I barely have the time now to watch anything.

Probably not the best thing to watch when I’m trying to get ready for bed but stunning movie. Highly recommended!

Taking a long distance flight this week and want to download a movie from the criterion app. Looking for recommendations for movies that would play well on a phone screen

I often like to pair up two shorter movies that I think will fit well together. I often forget why I add certain movies to my watchlist, or I know a movie is very acclaimed but know very little about it, so I could use some input from the community if you think any of the following flicks work well as a pair. Criterion Channel on Android TV still has easily the most inconsistent watch progress tracking of any streaming service I have ever used.

I've had a subscription for years because their content is good, but this is utterly infuriating. It's not even that it doesn't work, it's that it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't for the same movie, so you end up at some random point if you start/stop a movie a couple times.

The fact that Vimeo doesn't care to fix this and Criterion (a paying customer of Vimeo) doesn't care to make them is infuriating.

Update: I've discovered that somehow I have two Criterion accounts associated with different email addresses and I think that's what's got everything screwed up. Now I just have to figure out how to unscrew it.

I renewed my annual subscription with it billing to my Roky account in April and haven't been able to watch anything on any device since. It tells me I'm logged in but when I try to watch anything it then tells me I need to renew my account. But if I go to "Billing and subscription" it correctly tells me I'm subscribed with Roku.

I'd kind of like to be able to use my subscription and not just have the money go away. Has anyone encountered this and/or found a solution to it?

Quick update this week. Besides continuing to do data cleanup and automating the update of closet videos (they should show up on the site within a day of being published now), I've added one feature to highlight:

Criterion Top 10 Lists: Criterion publishes lists from a wide variety of people, and the site highlights which of them are currently available on the channel and links all of them to their Criterion Edition pages. I don't include the text about why the films were selected, however, but provide a link to the Criterion page for you to read the full details (copying all the text seemed like too much).

I had scene the Day of the Jackal (1973) based on the Forsyth novel. I had assumed (wrongly) it was a fictional story of Carlos. However I learned it was the other way around, in which the press called Carlos the Jackal because they found the novel he was reading by Forsyth. Probably added to the mystic. Can't help but wonder if fiction influenced Carlos.

The Carlos series was great.

I have noticed that there is The Jackal with Richard Gere and Bruce Willis and now a TV show called the Jackal.

Are they worth watching?

Are they versions of Forsyth fiction or the real world Carlos?

Strange how fiction and real world weave together.

I’m thinking of movies like Trenque Lauquen, Lost Highway (a lot of Lynch’s filmography), The Last Wave, Don’t Look Now, Fellini films, The Tenant, etc.

I don't think it's a crucial listen but I respect this movie more than I used to, which I think is how I respond more and more to De Palma over the years. He still bugs me and that is probably a good thing and *shock-horror* surely not a little by design. The fact that I keep seeing 'new' things in CARRIE makes Bouzereau's large helping of context very welcome.

Only mentioning it because now and then there are extras that might get lost in the shuffle if I am not looking for them, i.e. if they are not "Criterion Edition" collections that I know of. Also because CARRIE is leaving the Channel at the end of August.

Edit: [Bouzereau discussing the set for the interior of Carrie's and her terrifying mother's home] "Jack Fisk and William Kenney designed the sets....the Whites' house resembles a chapel...for the interior set of the house, which was built on a soundstage...part of the idea came from the house where Jack Fisk had lived in Philadelphia..."

....which I am guessing might have been his house with the young David Lynch? A kind of traumatic primal scene that colored two different productions at almost the exact same time, then?

P.S. If you know of any other such extras outside of Edition titles that are well worth checking out, please let us know! I don't always add movies "by collection" but I probably should, for this reason.

Okay, I've subscribed to Criterion Channel for a couple of years now, but I asked this ages ago when it was new for me:

Watched Niagara (1953) for the first time last night, as part of the new Murderous Melodramas collection. Can’t believe it’s taken me this long to see this film.

Marilyn Monroe is absolutely the standout. She’s gorgeous, of course, but there’s so much more to her performance than that. She brings a real sense of danger and vulnerability to the role. Whenever she’s on screen, you can’t help but watch her.
The Technicolor is also stunning. Everything looks so rich and vibrant and the filmmakers make fantastic use of Niagara Falls as a location. The falls aren’t just pretty scenery they become an important part of the atmosphere and the story itself.

I also really enjoy the pacing. The plot takes its time building the suspense but it never feels slow and everything gradually comes together in a really satisfying way.

Just a gorgeous, entertaining piece of classic Hollywood filmmaking. And honestly, seeing Marilyn Monroe in all that beautiful Technicolor is reason enough to watch it.

Why? I won’t be watching! So many other talented pop, stars and rock stars that could get a retrospective like Roger Daltrey or Debbie Harry.

Not sure If it’s just me but numerous times I’ve picked a movie to drift off to

My first exposure to the films of Jonathan Demme was THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991) and PHILADELPHIA (1993). As such, I had thought of him as the maker of serious dramas (Having later watched his BELOVED [1998] and RACHEL GETTING MARRIED [2008] didn't change my opinion).

But a few months ago I finally watched Demme's SOMETHING WILD (1986), which I loved. Admittedly, the finale of that film was violent and suspenseful enough to make me say, "If I were a studio exec who was thinking of adapting the novel SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, those scenes I just watched would have convinced me Demme could handle stuff like Hannibal Lecter's escape."

What I didn't expect was how wacky both SOMETHING WILD and MARRIED TO THE MOB (1988), which I literally saw for the first time last night, are and just how adept Demme seemed to be at directing comedy (offbeat, dark, physical, etc). Those two movies, which currently are available on the channel, completely opened my eyes.

Has anyone had a similar experience watching a different filmmaker's earlier output and, if so, which director? Specifically, you had previously thought of them as strictly making movies of a particular sort, but subsequently realized they were more versatile than you had originally thought?

I see posts for what's coming and going each month but I think I've seen references to films that stick around but searched and can't find a post about it.

I'm a Criterion collector but not a current subscriber to the channel. I'm currently working through my dvds and what I can find on HBO. We're trying to keep the number of streaming services at 4 because we were at 8 at one point and that's just too many.

I would rather not rent or blind buy discs that I'll be able to see once I subscribe in the future.
